Production of the Cadillac XT4 compact crossover will be paused for much of calendar 2025 according to the latest information from GM, as the factory where it is produced is retooled to add the revamped Chevy Bolt EV to the lineup of vehicles assembled at the facility.
Reported by The Detroit News along with a planned autumn production halt for the Chevy Malibu, pausing of the Cadillac XT4 assembly line will lead to workforce layoffs for the duration of the pause, The General says.
The automaker plans to “pause production of the Cadillac XT4 after January 2025” according to GM spokesperson Kevin Kelly. This halt, and that of the Chevy Malibu, will “facilitate the installation of tooling and other plant modifications” for the purpose of adding more models to the facility’s production capabilities.
Once the plant updates are complete, the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City will also be able to produce the next-generation Chevy Bolt EV. The new Bolt, which is likely to arrive for the 2026 model year, will make use of GM’s Ultium-based EV technology, unlike the now-discontinued first generation.
The pause in Cadillac XT4 production starting in February 2025 will continue for most of the year, with late 2025 as the current approximate date for the crossovers to resume assembly. The workers building XT4 units will be laid off for the duration of the pause, but will be “supported according to the provisions of the UAW-GM agreement” according to Kevin Kelly.
The GM spokesman added that “Fairfax will produce both the Bolt EV and XT4 on the same assembly line, which gives GM flexibility to respond to changes in customer demand.” Relatedly, Cadillac has said it no longer intends to have an EV-only vehicle lineup by 2030, but will continue making ICE models while increasing the number of EVs in its portfolio.
As a reminder, the XT4 is motivated by a single powerplant choice, the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LSY gasoline engine developing 235 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Output reaches the wheels via the GM nine-speed automatic transmission, with available drivetrains including both FWD and AWD.

Malibu just got the axe
They’re retooling for the XT4 replacement, the GT4, which is currently already launched in China. I predict that the reason we saw the redesigned XT5 being tested here is also an indication that it will be made here for the 2026 MY. I think both vehicles will be 2026 models. The current XT4 sales are steadily declining. With Cadillac’s new focus on continuing ICE vehicles, expect the XT4, XT5, and XT6 models to be replaced with their redesigns from China. This is ONLY my opinion, but we’ll see, I guess.
So if I’m understanding this correctly, if I wanted to purchase an XT4 next spring (2025), I better hope I can find one that meets my specs on a dealer lot.
I would suggest to find a dealer who would order one to be produced in early 2025 , that way you can get what you want
I think this is GM’S way to kill the xt4. How can any model survive being shut down for over half a year then brought back on line? If they resume production those most likely will be 2026 models that of course will have a price increase added.
With decisions like this, I’ m having trouble understanding why GM stock keeps going up.
The new XT4 should be a full hybrid.
I just bought a 2024 XT4 and I love it!!! So sad to hear they’re pausing it.
