The start of regular production (SORP) of the 2025 Chevy Malibu, which launches the tenth model year of the last Bow Tie sedan’s ninth generation with only minor changes and updates, has been rescheduled again, GM Authority has learned.
Previously, the 2025 Chevy Malibu was scheduled to begin rolling off the assembly line on May 31st, 2024, following the May 30th, 2024 conclusion of 2024 Chevy Malibu production, but both of these dates have now changed.
However, in a reminder that all production dates are tentative until production actually begins, The General now intends to start production of the 2025 Chevy Malibu on Wednesday, July 10th, 2024, instead. The postponement pushes back SORP by 40 days, and the new date is also tentative and subject to change in the meantime.
As GM Authority also just covered, production of the ninth generation Malibu is expected to end sometime this fall. This will result in only a few months of 2025 Chevy Malibu production, resulting in reduced numbers of the generation’s final model year. We expect an all-new tenth-generation Malibu to debut with the 2026 or 2027 model year, but those plans may have recently changed.
As a reminder, only one powerplant choice is available for the 2025 Chevy Malibu, specifically the turbocharged 1.5L I4 LFV gasoline engine developing 163 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. A continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) is paired with this engine for cog swaps.
Up until the Premier trim level was replaced with the 2LT trim in the 2023 Chevy Malibu, a second engine choice was also offered for the sedan in the form of the turbocharged 2.0L I4 LTG, rated at 250 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. This engine was paired with the GM nine-speed automatic transmission. However, this powerplant was dropped along with the Premier trim.
For structure, the Malibu current relies on the GM E2 platform. At the present time the sedan is produced at the GM Fairfax plant in Kansas City.

Now that its demise has been announced, watch sales skyrocket. When it’s gone, Hyundai and Kia will be the beneficiaries.
They have to start back tracking and get a new hybrid version out rather than an EV one. gm doesn’t know whether they are afoot or horseback with their misguided all EV push that consumers didn’t want lol.
Another grave error on GM’s behalf. They will just make foreign makes sell more sedans and become the rising stars of the automotive world.. GM struggles to improve their cars and Just drops one after another!…
I wouldn’t be surprised if there is further trim level, color choice, and options reduction. Maybe even just one “consolidated” trim level (1LT) for retail, and a fleet only LS/1FL model. Wouldn’t be the first time for “gm” to make this type of move, as they put another nameplate out to pasture. Wave goodbye to the mainstream Chevrolet passenger car. So sad.
The last and new Malibu model trim should be called the Limited.
The KC plant will be all electric vehicles later this year. Too bad for the Chevy dealers who no longer have a sedan to sale. And when the customer now goes to Toyota or other dealerships to get a sedan, he/she will also be exposed to the pickups and other vehicles. End result is the Chevy dealership will also end up losing pickup sales.
This is what gm don’t understand.
Ernie: I’ve been saying this for years. Many on here seem to dislike when I say it and get on my soapbox, but you are 1000% correct. They just don’t seem to understand that offering more than just trucks and SUV’s is important even if you don’t sell 300,000 a year. Why? For the exact reason you just said. I’ve often spoken about repeat and referral business and GM (and Ford) just don’t seem to care about that. Maybe this is why Ford’s truck sales are going down with zero sedans to sell. So how many of those lost truck sales have converted to another brand that still offer sedans?
I have been a loyal GM customer all of my life! It is sad to watch GM’s self destructive decisions giving up business to the foreign brands! It appears top GM management is only interested in high volume high profit SUVs and Trucks. The GM that I used to be so proud of with innovate leading edge design and features well ahead of all other brands is sadly gone!
We always rent a Malibu when on vacation and the LT turbo handles and drives very nice!
I guess sadly the days of “See the USA in Chevrolet” are gone!
Precisely. Mary Barra has made some serious missteps. With cars all but gone, you won’t have the traditional move from “one model to another” purchase cycle.
I’m a loyal GM customer however there are no hybrids so I’m forced to move brands.
TOYOTA MOTOR , HYUNDAI MOTOR, & KIA must be laughing out loud after this decision more units sold for them, more employees lay off thanks for the geniuses at General Motors. Promising innovation and a lot of B S. Way to go G M.! You have done it again 👏 😒
Hopefully someone from gm authority is reading the posts and feedback from all the loyal gm customers and remedies these issues ! You would at least think they do !
Chevrolet Malibu Must continue! Excellent value/price ratio! Excellent design and highly designed interiors! I remember My father had 1981 a white one with a 5.7 V8 engine!
This is a repeat of the Camaro phase-out. Just cut the carp and make nothing but 2024s till end of Malibu life span. Will a Short run of 2025s mean anything in the scheme of things?
Mary Barra, GM CEO, is clueless and has to go. She just follows the latest trend with absolutely no vision. Chevy needs sedans to pull people into dealerships, not everyone wants an suv. Now they’ll go somewhere else and may stay there. I know I will and I own 4 chevys, 3 of which are cars.
I have a 2014 Chevy Malibu LTZ turbo that has every option but one which was navigation. It is a magnificent automobile that I really cherish. It just drives so nice and with 295 lb feet of torque it moves the car out very fast. I would love to upgrade to a newer premiere but GM seems to have relegated the Malibu to the rental car lot. They had a great car with a turbo motor and 9-speed I just don’t know why they didn’t stick with it. I agree with all the posts about how short-sighted it is to get rid of the sedans. I have a neighbor who Loved her Chevy Cruze but now she will not buy a small SUV so she’s going to get a Kia and I think that’s sad.
Disappointed especially being a Malibu owner if gm going to end production on the Malibu hopefully gm ceo see this just know all other manufacturers are destroying you on the road with yur front wheel drive bs this woman dont understand cars look at dodge rear wheel is better and more horsepower like i honestly regret ever going to Chevy anymore willingly want to steal wink wink my 2021 Malibu RS so my insurance is forced to total loss it and get me a rear legged Donky with250 hp lol gm yu suck till yu realizes this woman is fu. Ck. Ing everything up it’s okay to break rules lady like no quema
I refuse to drive SUVs, and I only drive compacts. Just traded my Cruze in for a Civic. The HRV was pushed on me at the dealer, but I wouldn’t budge and I doubt the Civic is gonna any where, any time soon. Almost opted for an accord, but the 1.5T in the Civic is very zippy and I’m already getting 40MPG on my 55MPH straight stretch of road to work every day (~40 mile round trip).
Sedan drivers may be few and far between, but that’s because we’ve all left for the other brands. My 2016.5 Cruze was a great car, way better than the first gen Cruze, and I thought GM finally saw the light with it’s revision, but when Lordstown closed up shop, I knew when my car was ready to drive over rainbow bridge, I wouldn’t settle for an outdated Malibu that rotted on the vine. My Cruze performed admirably with almost 200k miles on the clock before it gave up the ghost.
GM and Ford are making huge mistakes axing their car line up. Hyundai, Honda, and Toyota are selling hundreds of thousands of these a year, and I’d be willing to bet a large bulk of those customers are former GM owners.
If the Cruze was still on the lots here, new, I’d have bought on in a heartbeat. I’d have even been okay with the 1.3T they’re putting in everything too. Wake up GM.
I’m so over Mary Barra. Why on earth wouldn’t GM/Chevy offer sedans. I’m a car guy, not a truck, or SUV guy. I drive around my town here in the Midwest, and yes many SUV’s. But I also still see about 40% cars. Ford and Stellantis are doing the same BS. Just wrapping up the sedan market and giving it to the Asian and European manufacturers. Dumbest idea ever. I am Chevy loyal had them since the 80’s when I learned how to drive. I have 4 now. A ’18 Sonic RS manual, a ’18 Cruze, my ’22 Malibu w/ 2.0T Premier, and a ’14 Traverse. All have been excellent cars. I suppose I’ll be driving them until the wheels fall off. Maybe by then the recto-cranial inversion issues at GM will be corrected.
i just bought 2024 rs work for gm wentzville mo drove to southern wisconsin cost 28.75 in gas i think that is good deal n malibu is good cost n semi good ride car Mary hope u rethink GM cars
