Ultium Cells Spring Hill Begins Battery Cell Shipments

Ultium Cells, a joint venture between General Motors and LG Energy Solution, has announced the production and shipment of the first battery cells produced at the Ultium Cells plant in Spring Hill, Tennessee. The announcement comes two and a half years after the company initially broke ground for construction of the new facility, with plans to produce millions of units of battery cells annually for use in new GM electric vehicles. The initial battery cell units were shipped to the neighboring GM Spring Hill assembly plant, where they will be used in the production of the Cadillac Lyriq crossover. The upcoming Acura ZDX crossover is also expected to roll off the Spring Hill assembly line, cradling new Ultium batteries.

“This moment has been years in the making, and I’m grateful to the thousands of contractors, community partners, and team members who have worked tirelessly to make this moment a reality,” said Plant Director Chris Desautels. “We’ve built a great team here in Spring Hill, and we’re proud of this world-class facility.”

The Spring Hill battery plant is located along Highway 31 between Spring Hill and Columbia. The first battery cell shipment was made on Thursday, March 21st, 2024.

The Spring Hill facility began its initial production operations late last year and is only the latest Ultium Cells plant to begin operations. Production at the company’s facility in Lordstown, Ohio kicked off in September of 2022.

“Ultium Cells – Tennessee creates incredible synergies by combining the operational expertise of GM and the validated, state of the art battery processes and equipment technology of LG Energy Solution to make benchmark battery cells for our customer General Motors,” said LG Energy Solution Regional Director, Youngduk Kim.

The joint venture is currently taking job applications for the Spring Hill facility as it seeks to expand the plant’s production capacity.

  1. Is that plant part of the GM UAW contract which was negotiated last fall? I read that Ultium battery factories would be populated by a UAW represented workforce and they would fall under the GM UAW contract.

    2. They receive subsidies to build them. There’s that incentive and it’s another example of government interference and it’s negative effects in the market.

    1. GM just got out of the bottle neck for Module production, different from cell production. GM has a stock pile of cells and ramp up will be throughout the year.
