Some Chevy Silverado Police Pursuit Trucks Were Fitted With The Wrong Tires

GM has issued a Customer Satisfaction Program for certain units of 2023 and 2024 Chevy Silverado trucks with the Police Pursuit Package (RPO code 9C1) that may have been fitted with the incorrect tires.

Tagged with Customer Satisfaction Program number N242437510, some Chevy Silverado Police Pursuit trucks have incorrect tires for the package, which might not be able to withstand the stresses of high-speed pursuit. Dealers are instructed to replace the four driving tires and one spare tire with the correct Goodyear Wrangler Trailrunner A/T 275/60R20 tires.

The customer satisfaction program will be available through May 31st, 2026.  GM has not publicly indicated the number of Silverado Police Pursuit trucks affected at this time.

As a reminder, the 2023 Chevy Silverado Police Pursuit Vehicle features numerous tweaks and upgrades making it better suited to the needs of the constabulary. The vehicle comes with the Z71 package including Rancho shocks, a locking rear differential, and an underbody skid plate. To improve off-road maneuverability it can be optioned with a 2-inch suspension lift. Lighting control Surveillance Mode and LED or halogen spotter lamps are two among a lineup of other options.

The police Silverado is available in Crew Cab Short Bed configuration. Motivation is supplied by the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 engine producing 355 horsepower and equipped with a heavy-duty engine air filter. The V8 is paired with the GM 10-speed automatic transmission and a 4WD drivetrain. Further upgrades include six-piston Brembo front brakes, 16-inch brake rotors, and 20-inch black steel wheels.

Notable, the Chevy Silverado PPV also gets the Protected Idle feature. This enables the police to leave the truck both idling and unlocked, but unable to be driven without a remote key being present on the driver’s person. This prevents unauthorized people from driving the vehicle away while the officer can easily access items inside, or jump into the driver’s seat to begin an immediate pursuit without needing to restart the truck.

  1. Even the correct tires seem inadequate with their “S” (112 mph) speed rating.

A better choice would be Yokohama Geolandar AT, with an “H” (130 mph) speed rating.

    1. I don’t think an “S” speed rating is an issue on the Silverado Police Pursuit package. GM’s advertised top speed for the Silverado with a 5.3 is 114MPH. That’s for the lighter consumer version, not a police version with all the added weight from police equipment and the aero drag from a light bar, push bar, etc. An “S” speed rating is probably more than adequate for the Silverado Police package.

What I don’t understand is why they put those junk Trailrunner AT off-road tires on a police vehicle. My 21 Sierra Denali came with the same Goodyears and they’re terrible tires (why GM puts an off-road tire on something like a Denali makes no sense to start with, but that’s a whole different discussion). The Trailrunner AT’s aren’t great in the dry, are worse in the wet and wear out quickly. The vast majority of my driving is highway and the Trailrunners were shot at 33,000 miles. I replaced them with BFG Advantage TA Sport LT’s (118 MPH rated) that ride better, handle better in wet, dry and snow and after 30,000 miles are showing very little wear.

  2. I know GM is all about profit, but it’s time to build a purpose built police “car”! Not truck or suv.

    1. They did that with the Carpice which did not sell well compared to the Ford & Dodge offers.

      1. Mainly due to requirement of being built in North America. The last Caprice was built in Australia.
