Some Chevy Bolt EV And EUV Models Need Powertrain Control Module Reprogrammed

The General has issued a Service Bulletin describing an available fix for a powertrain control module issue on some 2020 through 2022 Chevy Bolt EV and 2022 Chevy Bolt EUV units.

The error causes several symptoms and problems in affected Chevy Bolt units according to the bulletin. These include reduced propulsion (less power) and a limit on battery charge at 30 percent of the normal maximum charge.

The problem also causes the affected Chevy Bolt EV and Chevy Bolt EUV units to generate several diagnostic trouble codes or DTCs, helping identify the problem. These DTCs include U3620-U362E or U3630-U3636, symptom 17. A malfunction indicator light will also illuminate in the driver information center, with possible messages related to the 30 percent limited charge and reduced propulsion.

Qualified GM service technicians are instructed to apply the available fix both to Bolt EV and EUV units in dealership inventory and to customer vehicles brought in for any reason. The repair requires no parts and involves reprogramming the Powertrain Control Module 2.

The fix is available free of charge to the vehicle owner, takes less than 1 hour to complete, and is offered through April 30th, 2026.

GM has previously issued several service bulletins for issues with the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV. A bulletin in September 2022 detailed a fix for an issue in which a “service transmission, unable to shift” message was displayed, also corrected by control module reprogramming. A month later, The General issued a bulletin about a high voltage connector issue. A fix for mislabeled battery packs was offered in 2023.

Despite these occasional problems both Bolt variants rank well in the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. EV Experience (EVX) Ownership Study. The average score for mass market EVs is 718 on a 1,000-point scale, while the Bolt EV and Bolt EUV scored 733 and 738 respectively.

While production ended for both models on December 20th, 2023 at the GM Lake Orion plant in Michigan, GM has since announced it will release a new generation of the Bolt EV using the Bolt EUV as the basis. In a first for Ultium-based EVs, the new Bolt will be powered by lithium iron phosphate or LFP battery cells, helping to reduce production costs.
