Certain units of the GMC Canyon pickup are included in a Service Bulletin from The General relating to a whining sound from the transmission.
The Service Bulletin is identified by Bulletin Number 24-NA-002 and describes an issue with a loud whine coming from the transmission during acceleration or coasting between 25 and 50 mph for certain 2023 GMC Canyon and 2024 GMC Canyon trucks. Involved vehicles are equipped with the TurboMax branded 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine and the Hydramatic 8L80 GM eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO code MLC).
Authorized General Motors service technicians are instructed to carry out an additional test to verify the problem. When running the engine, the whining sound should be produced while the GMC Canyon is in 4th or 5th gear and the engine is operating at 2,000 rpm to 2,800 rpm. The sound should not occur in 1st or 2nd gear, or in 6th gear or above.
If the whining occurs in the rpm and gear range indicated, the issue is confirmed as resulting from isolation of the transmission cable. The fix available is placing a transmission cable weight on the cable, with the part used shown in the image above.
Pricing changes were introduced for the 2024 GMC Canyon, with GM Authority as the first to report the Elevation and AT4 trims are now $800 below 2023 MSRP thanks to elimination of the Three Years of OnStar & Connected Services Plan (RPO code R9M) in favor of a thriftier alternative. AT4X pricing increased $1,100 while Denali starting MSRP remains unchanged. Starting price varies from a low of $37,595 for the RWD Elevation to a high of $55,895 for the AT4X.
Under the hood, only a single powerplant is offered to give the 2024 GMC Canyon motivation – the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine developing 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque. TurboMax branding has been added for 2024 to this high-output tuned powerplant. 2WD is standard on lower trim levels while 4WD is available or equipped as standard depending on trim.
For structure, the Canyon uses an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform. Production of the truck is currently under way at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.
