Here’s Why Your Chevy Colorado May Be Making Whining Sounds

GM has released a Service Bulletin for select units of the Chevy Colorado pickup truck over an issue of a whining noise from the transmission.

Bulletin number 24-NA-002 describes how certain 2023 Chevy Colorado and 2024 Chevy Colorado pickups equipped with the TurboMax branded 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine may have an audible whining come from the transmission when accelerating or coasting at between 25 mph and 50 mph. Involved vehicles are also equipped with the Hydramatic 8L80 GM eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO code MFC).

The bulletin also mentions the 8L45 eight-speed automatic transmission (RPO code N8R), which is paired with the Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine.

GM instructs service personnel to carry out further verification of the problem by running the engine. If the issue described in the bulletin is present, the transmission whines in 4th and 5th gear while the engine is running at between 2,000 rpm and 2,800 rpm. Whining outside this rpm and transmission band may indicate a different problem.

If the whining sound matches these levels, the problem is caused by transmission cable isolation. The General instructs service personnel to install a transmission cable weight to remedy the issue. The transmission itself does not need to be replaced.

Pricing for the 2024 Chevy Colorado increased by $400 for most trims and $100 for the ZR2 compared to the 2023 Colorado. Starting prices range from $31,095 for the WT trim with rear-wheel drive to $48,395 for the ZR2 trim level with 4WD. These prices include a destination freight charge of $1,595, up from $1,495 for the previous model year.

As a reminder, the Chevy Colorado cradles one of two powerplant choices under the hood. One of these is the entry-level Turbo 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine developing 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque. Also available is the TurboMax 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, rated at 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque.

The updated 31XX-2 platform provides structure under the skin of the Chevy Colorado, while production of the truck takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

  1. Get rid of all the 8spds, go with the 10 spd. Stop being so cheap gm.

    1. Agreed. I have the 23 Canyon AT4X and the tranny runs at 210 degrees F as the nominal temp. That’s one good way to drastically shorten the life of the tranny. I just hope a company releases a external cooler to lower these temps.

      I also have a 23 yukon XL with the 6.2L, AKA The Beast… and it’s nominal tranny temp is 150 F. Please explain that GM.

  2. Wonder if the transmission temperature range has anything to do with my 2022 Colorado shifting crappie during the first few miles.
