Launching a full refresh of the heavy-duty truck model, the 2024 GMC Sierra HD includes significant updates throughout, ranging from an updated exterior and overhauled cockpit to engine changes and the introduction of the new GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate and GMC Sierra HD AT4X.  The GMC Sierra HD payload capacities are also slightly changed for the 2024 model year, as detailed here.
Looking first at the available powerplants supporting the 2024 GMC Sierra HD payload hauling metrics, the truck offers a pair of powerplant choices that have both been updated along with the 2024 refresh. Standard under the hood is the naturally aspirated 6.6L V8 L8T gasoline engine, which is once again rated at 401 horsepower at 5,200 rpm and 464 pound-feet of torque at 4,000 rpm.
Alternately, the Sierra HD can be optioned with the 6.6L V8 L5P turbodiesel Duramax engine developing 470 horsepower at 2,800 rpm and 975 pound-feet of torque at 1,600 rpm. Pre-refresh, this powerplant cranked out significantly lower output at 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque.
While the L8T gasoline engine formerly connected to the GM six-speed automatic transmission, both engines now handle cog swaps with the GM 10-speed automatic transmission, which carries Allison branding.
With these details of the way, let’s look more closely at the 2024 GMC Sierra HD payload figures for various body styles, drivetrains, and engines:

These metrics differ slightly from those of the 2023 GMC Sierra HD. Every Sierra HD includes a vehicle-specific Trailering Information Label, which lists its unique trailering metrics, including max tongue weight, max payload and more.
The bones of the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD are provided by a more-capable variant of the GM T1 platform. Production takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.
