Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Sierra sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 kept Big Red’s lineup in fourth place from the previous quarter in the full-size pickup truck segment when ranked by sales volume. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) kept the top spot in spite of a 13 percent dip in sales to 145,200 units, while the Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales), the Sierra’s corporate cousin and T1 platform mate, took second with a two percent increase to 128,926 units. As such, Chevy Silverado sales this quarter actually narrowed the gap even more with the F-Series this time around. The Ram Pickup lineup placed third with a 15 percent drop to 89,417 units, while the GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales) took fourth with a two percent uptick to 68,597 units.

The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth with a 31 percent bump to 36,215 units. The all-electric Ford F-150 Lightning (see running Ford F-150 Lightning sales) saw sales grow 80 percent for 7,743 deliveries, outselling the Nissan Titan, which posted a three percent increase to 4,145 units. The all-electric Rivian R1T moved 2,400 units, though sales were down 30 percent. The GMC Hummer EV Pickup (see running GMC Hummer EV Pickup sales) moved 1,668 units, and the new all-electric Chevy Silverado EV (see running Silverado EV sales) posted 1,061 deliveries. The most recent addition to the list, the Tesla Cybertruck, recorded 500 deliveries.

And the Sierra outsold the Tundra and Titan, plus all EV models combined, by nearly 15K units.

The Sierra earned a 14 percent segment share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The F-Series posted a 30 percent share, down three percentage points, followed by the Silverado with a 27 percent share, up two percentage points, and the Ram Pickup with an 18 percent share, down three percentage points. The Tundra posted a seven percent share, up two percentage points, while the Lightning held a two percent share, up one percentage point, and the Titan maintained a one percent share. The segment share of remaining EV models was nil.

Combining Chevy Silverado sales with the Silverado EV and GMC Sierra sales with the Hummer EV Pickup gave GM a solid 200,252 combined deliveries for a 41 percent segment share, outselling Ford by over 47K units. That cements The General’s standing as the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America, accounting for more than two-fifths of all deliveries. Additionally, GM handily outsold the Ram Pickup by more than two-to-one.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales performance continued in the black yet again during the first quarter of 2024, with improvements to and expansion of the Sierra lineup appearing to pay off for GM. Later this year, the Hummer EV Pickup will be joined by another all-electric model, the GMC Sierra EV.

Combining GMC Sierra Sierra sales with those of the Chevy Silverado and the two brands’ EV models kept The General as the overall top seller of full-size pickup truck sales in the U.S., outselling Ford by over 47K units. Notably, the F-Series was in the red again, as it was the previous quarter.

Full-size trucks are the lifeblood of General Motors, with Chevy and GMC models combined accounting for 34 percent, or over a third, of all GM sales in the U.S. during Q1 2024.

About GMC Sierra 1500

For 2024, the GMC Sierra 2.7L engine is called TurboMax. That engine now gets the Hydra-Matic 8L80 M5U revised eight-speed automatic transmission.

Also, the 2024 Sierra AT4X offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2 liter gets a throatier exhaust note thanks to a new Active Exhaust system. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra AT4X is available with new beadlock-capable wheels along with new black and red beadlock wheel decorative rings.

Also, the 2024 Sierra 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

Furthermore, the GMC Sierra 1500 now offers a ZR2 Spec Multimatic DSSV Shock System accessory for the 2019 model year or later Sierra 1500, with a design and tuning intended to provide the truck with improved off-road performance.

About GMC Sierra HD

In October 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD, debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and powertrain updates. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks, which offers massaging seats for the first time on the Sierra HD. Consequently, a new Denali Reserve Package replaces the Denali Ultimate Package offered on the 2023 model. Also, the 2024 Sierra HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options.

Last May, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X and the new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition as Big Red’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

The GMC Sierra HD won the Strategic Vision 2023 Total Quality Impact award in the heavy-duty pickup category. The GMC Sierra 3500 HD also won the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award, marking it as one of 28 nameplates projected to keep the highest percentage of their original value three years after purchase. It’s also the top model for the highest three-year residual value in the large Heavy-Duty Pickup segment.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began this past June, with the nameplate introducing a handful of significant changes and updates over the preceding 2023 model. That includes the launch of two entry-level trim levels, the 2X and 2, though GM Authority has learned that the “base” 2 trim has been dropped. Range-topping Edition 1 and 3X trims round out the all-electric Hummer off-road pickup truck lineup for the 2024 model year.

Another critical update for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup is the introduction of the new Omega Edition, which won’t return for the 2025 model year.

Additionally, for 2024, the Pickup offers a new LPO-level or dealer-installed optional Lifestyle Adventure Package that provides camping capabilities for off-roaders and other outdoor enthusiasts. A step up from that is the new EarthCruiser, a variant of the Pickup designed to tackle overlanding adventures in zero-emission style.

The GMC Hummer EV made the top 10 list of most popular luxury EVs.

About GMC Sierra EV

Over a year ago, GM also debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali. The only variant built for the 2024 model year will be the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. All other models, including the “regular” Denali, off-road AT4, and entry-level Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.

Interestingly, the 2024 Acadia and Sierra EV are GMC’s first models to get GM’s new electronic shift lever.

In April, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 received a lower price and higher range estimate.

  1. Sad to say but GM is junk. When the last square body left the plant, so did there toughness and value. I’ll keep my 17 with 100k over what they are selling today. Which really blows because I want a new one.😭

    3. Ford & Dodge have bigger problems, and no truck is “perfect” GM is building the best HD’s out there, just look at sales & reviews.

  2. Tundra sales are “up” only because the sales number a year ago was terrible for being the newest half-ton on the market with a high output TTV6. The Tundra plant was built with the capacity to build over 200k trucks but is on track to sell 120-130k with the help of $6-7k off MSRP.
