GM Envolve, the automaker’s commercial sales division, is offering an up-fitted Chevy Silverado 1500 to those Chevy Express customers impacted by recent delays in van production, GM Authority has learned. GM issued a “Stop Build” order for four configurations of the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana commercial cargo vans late last year. The Chevy Silverado 1500 Cargo Truck up-fitting package includes several components from cargo management company Adrian Steel.
According to sources familiar with the matter, GM Envolve is offering a custom up-fitted version of the 2024 Chevy Silverado 1500 2WD Crew Cab Short Bed WT to those customers impacted by delayed van production. The up-fitted Silverado is equipped with a unique Cargo Truck Package and is designed to serve as a viable alternative for those waiting on a new Chevy Express van, featuring several upgrades tailored for cargo transportation needs. Among these enhancements are products from Adrian Steel, including an “extendobed,” a truck cap, and a drop-down ladder rack.
Interestingly, the up-fitted Silverado provides a lower cost-per-mile operational expense than the 2024 Chevy Express Cargo Van 3500 Long Wheelbase, primarily as the result of a lower purchase price and higher resale value. Check out the table below for a more thorough comparison:
2024 Express Cargo Van 3500 Long Wheelbase | 2024 Silverado 1500 2WD Crew Cab Short Bed WT | |
---|---|---|
MSRP | $46,495 | $43,045 |
Invoice Cost | $43,551 | $41,509 |
Typical Upfit Cost | $5,000 | $10,000 |

Estimated Mileage Driven | 100,000 | 100,000 |
Estimated Fuel Cost (based on $3/gallon) | $20,000 | $15,000 |
Vehicle Worth End of Life (based on ALG) | $11,158.80 | $15,496.20 |
Total Cost to Operate Over 5 Years | 57 cents/mile | 51 cents/mile |
Capacity | 2 passengers | 5 passengers |
As GM Authority covered previously, GM issued a “Stop Build” order for the 2024 Chevy Express and 2024 GMC Savana in December of the 2023 calendar year. The order affected new units produced at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri, and was issued to address a problem with the second-row seating area in specific model variants.
Production has since resumed, as GM Authority covered earlier this month. However, the new up-fitted Silverado is offered to help GM catch up with a backlog of orders for the Chevy Express accumulated after last year’s production stoppage. Production of the 2025 Chevy Express is currently expected to kick off in October, a little later than for previous model years, partly due to a need to catch up with demand.

GM,
April 1 was last week. In NO way does a 1/2-ton short bed pickup replace a 1-ton extended van!!!
Instead of looking out your HQ windows and dreaming up #, you need to step into the real world and talk (and LISTEN) to folks who actually use work vehicles.
The spin they are putting on this to the dealers to try to make the “Cargo Truck” look and sound like a better option than an Express van is laughable! The platform was paid for decades ago! These vans have to be pure profit for them! There is no substitute for an express van! GM has better wake up and start listening to their customers! Before there aren’t any left! The corporate arrogance is getting old!
Have fun using that setup in the rain.
4 seat short bed truck to replace a 2 seat extended cargo van. my 4yo could tell you the differences between those pictures.
let alone needing 6′ behind the bed to access the tray. hopefully all trades work in an open field and don’t ever have to park their vehicles in a lot or on the street.
The end-of-life value on the van is way understated.
Used Express vans are pulling serious money.
They are tough old work horses and outlast the competition by years.
The trades people I know are using other brands only because they have been unable to get Express/Savanas.
What the F is the problem!?
I suspect the installed government is the cause. We don’t want those electric vans !!!!
