GM full-size pickup truck sales increased by three percent to 200,252 units in the United States during the first quarter of 2024. Chevy Silverado sales posted about a two percent bump to 128,926 units, while GMC Sierra sales also had a two percent uptick to 68,597 units. ICE-based trucks include light-duty and heavy-duty lineups, while the Silverado includes a medium-duty lineup. As has historically been the case, GM still sells about twice as many Silverados as Sierras.

Solid sales performance yet again of GM’s full-size pickup truck nameplates continues to grow thanks to updated lineups, new variants, and the addition of first-ever EV models. The ICE-powered Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales) and Sierra (see running  GMC Sierra sales), along with the all-electric Chevy Silverado EV (see running Silverado EV sales) and GMC Hummer EV Pickup (see running GMC Hummer EV Pickup sales) enabled The General to vastly outsell the Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-Series sales) by over 47K units.

The Blue Oval is simply unable to unseat GM as the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America. Additionally, GM handily outsold the Ram Pickup by more than two to one.

Regarding EVs, the Rivian R1T was actually outsold by GM’s offerings, while the most recent addition to the list, Tesla Cybertruck, recorded 500 deliveries. However, the Ford F-150 Lightning (see running Ford F-150 Lightning sales) beat all other EV entries combined.

Looking Ahead

GM full-size truck sales, including those of the Chevy Silverado and Silverado EV along with the GMC Sierra and Hummer EV Pickup, continue to see strong demand, still outpacing cross-town rivals to start out the year. More Silverado EV variants will launch this year, along with the all-electric GMC Sierra EV. That should grow The General’s share of the full-size pickup truck segment even more, which has also been boosted by updated lineups and new variants of its traditional ICE-based offerings.

This is all good news since full-size trucks are GM’s biggest money-makers.

About Chevrolet Silverado 1500

For 2024, the Chevy Silverado 2.7L engine is called TurboMax. That engine now gets the Hydra-Matic 8L80 M5U revised eight-speed automatic transmission.

Also, the 2024 Silverado ZR2 offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2-liter will sound meaner thanks to a new Active Exhaust system. Additionally, the 2024 Silverado ZR2 is available with new beadlock-capable wheels along with new black and red beadlock wheel decorative rings.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Silverado High Country will be available with the Midnight Edition Package. All trims of the 2024 Silverado 1500 offer a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

About Chevrolet Silverado HD

In the fall of 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Chevy Silverado HD with new exterior styling, an overhauled interior space, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and upgrades to the powertrain lineup. It offers a new High Country Premium package that replaces the previous High Country Deluxe package. Also, the 2024 Silverado HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options, with some now available on more trim levels. The 2024 Silverado HD gets a new Midnight Edition package as well.

In April 2023, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 and the new 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 Bison as the Bow Tie brand’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado HD ZR2 shined in MotorTrend’s off-road pickup comparison test as the “one beefy heavy-duty off-road truck standing alone at the top of the mountain.”

In January, GM unveiled the 2025 Chevy Silverado HD, highlighting several updates and changes, the most notable of which is the highly anticipated new 2025 Chevy Silverado HD Trail Boss package.

About Chevrolet Silverado EV

The first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV officially debuted at CES 2022, arriving in the well-equipped RST First Edition and fleet-focused WT trim levels.

The all-electric Silverado was engineered from the ground up to be exclusively an electric vehicle.

The RST trim level arrives with a long feature list, debuting as the RST First Edition. A Trail Boss trim will launch as a 2025 model. Other trims, such as a new Custom trim level that GM Authority was first to report about, as well as a High Country trim, are expected to join the lineup in the near future.

The Chevy Silverado EV was among the NACTOY 2024 Truck of the Year finalists, competing in the 30th annual North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards.

In April, the RST First Edition received a lower price and higher range estimate.

Since then, the Silverado EV RST has achieved a 460-mile range in real-world testing.

About GMC Sierra 1500

For 2024, the GMC Sierra 2.7L engine is called TurboMax. That engine now gets the Hydra-Matic 8L80 M5U revised eight-speed automatic transmission.

Also, the 2024 Sierra AT4X offers the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. That 6.2 liter gets a throatier exhaust note thanks to a new Active Exhaust system. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra AT4X is available with new beadlock-capable wheels along with new black and red beadlock wheel decorative rings.

Also, the 2024 Sierra 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

About GMC Sierra HD

In October 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD, debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and powertrain updates. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks, which offers massaging seats for the first time on the Sierra HD. Consequently, a new Denali Reserve Package replaces the Denali Ultimate Package offered on the 2023 model. Also, the 2024 Sierra HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options.

Last May, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X and the new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition as Big Red’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

The GMC Sierra HD won the Strategic Vision 2023 Total Quality Impact award in the heavy-duty pickup category. The GMC Sierra 3500 HD also won the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award, marking it as one of 28 nameplates projected to keep the highest percentage of their original value three years after purchase. It’s also the top model for the highest three-year residual value in the large Heavy-Duty Pickup segment.

This month, the GMC Sierra HD won the S&P Global Mobility 2023 Automotive Loyalty Award in the heavy-duty pickup segment.

About GMC Hummer EV Pickup

Production of the 2024 GMC Hummer EV Pickup began this past June, with the nameplate introducing a handful of significant changes and updates over the preceding 2023 model. That includes the launch of two entry-level trim levels, the 2X and 2, though GM Authority has learned that the “base” 2 trim has been dropped. Range-topping Edition 1 and 3X trims round out the all-electric Hummer off-road pickup truck lineup for the 2024 model year.

Another critical update for the 2024 Hummer EV Pickup is the introduction of the new Omega Edition, which won’t return for the 2025 model year. This limited-run variant includes a unique matte paint finish, unique wheels, and a few other unique accents.

Additionally, for 2024, the Pickup offers a new LPO-level or dealer-installed optional Lifestyle Adventure Package that provides camping capabilities for off-roaders and other outdoor enthusiasts. A step up from that is the new EarthCruiser, a variant of the Pickup designed to tackle overlanding adventures in zero-emission style.

The GMC Hummer EV has made the top 10 list of most popular luxury EVs.

About GMC Sierra EV

Over a year ago, GM also debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali. The only variant built for the 2024 model year will be the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. All other models, including the “regular” Denali, off-road AT4, and entry-level Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.

Interestingly, the 2024 Acadia and Sierra EV are GMC’s first models to get GM’s new electronic shift lever.

In April, the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 received a lower price and higher range estimate.

  1. I have read that the Silverado 1500 has been outselling the f-150 for a long time, which is why Ford advertises “F Series” trucks are the number one. They sell significantly more super duties to fleet than Chevy does.
They are usually much cheaper to fleets, and for years Chevy had crap ground clearance which made it a tough sell for construction or welding rigs knowing it was going to drag it’s belly without adding a lift kit.
Now Chevy’s have decent ground clearance, but truck guys tend to stick with what they know (which has been superduty’s) and fleet managers buy cheapest which is usually Ford, so they sell a ton more 250/350 models than chev.
These days I don’t think there are bad options for quality (a few engine’s I’d avoid, but not a brand as a whole)
I stick with Chevy’s because I’ve had good luck with them lasting, and my stuff is all old so that matters.

  2. Correct. Ford is the best selling full truck brand based on total sales. Silverado outsells Ford full size trucks on a retail basis. Combined GM full size trucks have 44% of the retail market.

  3. For a lonnnnnng time this was a two horse race. Chevy vs Ford. Chevrolet used to sell a million trucks a year, now that’s dwindled down to 500,000- 600,000 a year. A lot of companies and the government won’t buy made in Mexico trucks. gm decided to throw another horse in the race. I guess their thinking is eight legs are better than four!

    1. So much incorrect info in this assumption I don’t know where to begin, lets go statement by false statement…

Chevy never sold a million trucks a year, neither has Ford first of all.

Second, GMC has been around longer than Chevy, it has always been a three horse race.

Third, most give zero craps about where their vehicle is built and most don’t even know at that. It is build by an american company, that is all that most need to know or matters, their dollars stay here as opposed to Toyota fan boys who think their US built trucks dollars magically stay here and don’t go back to corporate in Japan (they have zero idea how corporate roll ups and consolidations work). The government has most GM vehicles, I promise many are built in Mexico. Shoot, they are the ones who worked up the NAFTA, they are completely good with them being built across either border…

Please stop posting if this is what you will post, it just misleads people…

      1. TMI I agree and if people actually think that Toyota is building vehicles here for the sake of Americans like they care….they don’t care because I guarantee you if it didn’t make profitable sense for Toyota to build vehicles here they would go right back to building them in Japan and give the Americans the middle finger with jobs and all! 🤌🤌🤌

  6. I can only speak to where I live, but there seems to be a lot of people that have a Ford company truck and their personal truck they spent their own money on is a GM. That would kinda go along with the Ford sells more fleet and GM sells mostly retail theory.

    Reply
    1. I can see the Ford guys crying foul, “it takes two GM divisions to out sell one Ford.”

      Reply
      1. While that’s a true statement, the ultimate test would be if GMC went away then would future customers switch to Chevy? I suspect more would than would not.

        Reply
        1. John Q Public no because nobody would buy a more expensive Chevy at GMC prices so GM would lose money. It would be like Ford discontinuing Lincoln and expecting Ford vehicles to sell at Lincoln prices, or Lexus going away and buying a Camry for $70,000-$80,000 dollars.

          Reply
      2. Ford used to offer 2 trucks F-100 and Mercury, as Ram had 2 as well, Dodge and Fargo. GM had Chev and GMC.
Ford and Chrysler consolidated under 1 banner name F series and Dodge (now RAM)
They still build as many variations and trim levels as GM , but by calling them all F series gives them a marketing position.
GM is more interested in profit for the platform , GMC commands the higher trims and retail prices , while Chevy is more for the everyday guy.
GM knows their platform outsells Ford and with the GMC brand it allows for greater profit.
Regardless of what Ford claims, GM has the best selling FS truck platform , and likely the most profitable.
Their customer base also supports the 2 brands, so its a win win , the customer wins and GM wins
So let the others crow about their best selling name plate, and only journalists with a limited understanding of the product and the market would promote Ford as the the best selling FS truck.

  7. JoeBryant Chevy and GMC sales should be together it’s the same company. I live in northern NJ and I see a good mix of truck brands Ford, Chevy GMC, RAM/Dodge…yes I still call them Dodge because in essence that’s what RAM Is. It seems to like people buy what they like and what works for them different brands have different strengths and weaknesses some Ford’s might have a beefier suspension, some Chevy’s might have better engines, RAM might have a more luxurious interior. While competition is good and all it also forces much higher prices year after year as well.

    Reply
    1. Usually competition forces lower prices. I think probably true for trucks. Imagine if the only seller was GM or F or RAM? You have to buy theirs and they can charge what they want. Monopolies are normally bad. Remember what a long distance phone call cost?

  9. 15 years from now we’ll be having the same discussion. Ford vs. Chevy. Like the earlier post I think Dodge might struggle to hold their sales. We’ll see how good their hybrid systems are and how that Hurricane engine fares. Dumping the Hemi might come back to haunt them. Time will tell.

  11. I have always wondered why GM is not more aggressive in their advertising. They should advertise the Silverado out, sells the F150, or they should advertise that combine GMC and Chevy sales outsell Ford. Yet GM lets Ford get away with saying number one selling truck for 47 years. get some balls, GM.

  12. I keep waiting for Big Media to start reporting that Ford is a dying company only profitable in N America albeit with shrinking US sales.
Chevy, in virtually every segment, in number 3 after Honda while GM is number 1 with all brands calculated. In subcompact and large SUV, Chevy now leads. Ford fails whether it’s Bronvo Sport, Escape, Edge, EV Mustang. Ford hasn’t launched a hit in years. Should the economy seriously stumble, Ford wil end up w/VW possibly only selling trucks, large SUVs and vans which are it’s niche. If not ffg or F-150, Ford would be like Stellantis
