GM Energy Launches Vehicle-To-Home EV Charging Tech

GM Energy, a wholly owned subsidiary of General Motors, has announced new vehicle-to-home (V2H) charging technology as part of the launch of its initial product offerings. The V2H system promises customers a more resilient and integrated personal energy management system, including mitigation of weather-related power outages. The first GM vehicle compatible with the GM Energy V2H system is the Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition.

The GM Energy V2H system enables electric vehicles to serve as a backup power source for homes, effectively transforming EVs into mobile energy storage units. During power outages or peak electricity demand periods, homeowners can use the bidirectional charging capability to tap into the energy stored in their EV’s battery to power their homes. This technology is particularly valuable in areas prone to weather-related power disruptions, offering an additional layer of security and convenience.

The initial product suite, available through GM Energy’s new e-commerce platform, includes various bundle options that cater to different customer needs. These bundles combine hardware, software, and installation services to provide a seamless integration of EVs into the home energy system. GM Energy has partnered with Qmerit to facilitate this integration, ensuring that customers receive expert guidance, from obtaining necessary permits to connecting with utility providers.

The first GM vehicle to offer integration with the GM Energy V2H bidirectional charging technology is the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition, however GM plans to extend this technology across its Ultium-based EV lineup by 2026. Moreover, GM Energy aims to educate and engage customers through its Energy Live platform and GM mobile brand apps, which integrate all aspects of energy management into a user-friendly digital interface. This holistic approach ensures that users can effortlessly manage their energy use, contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective lifestyle.

Looking ahead, GM Energy will expand its offerings to include stationary energy storage and solar integration solutions. These additions will further enhance the versatility of GM’s energy ecosystem, enabling customers to adopt a fully electric lifestyle with greater ease and efficiency.

  1. It would be nice if GM Energy offered a V2H retrofit kit for my Bolt EUV. Living in SoCal this would be very interesting. I would like to get rid of my Generac Gen-Set, where I have to find a place to cycle out stored gasoline every year (with Sta-bil of course). This back-up would be for down times of 3-5 days for fire or earthquake power disruptions.

  2. All I need is a 30amp plug outlet from the truck that I can manage as if it were my gas generator and maybe the app tracking flow usage of expended battery rate suggesting how long that flow rate might last. Thats it!
