Performance of the all-new 2024 Chevy Trax in the marketplace continues to shine in its full year of recorded sales, shown here in the sporty RS trim.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

Logging its first full year of sales, performance of the all-new Chevy Trax during Q1 2024 placed the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover in third place, down a spot from the previous quarter, when ranked by sales volume in a crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment that is now comprised of 21 entries.

The Subaru Crosstrek held the top spot with an eight percent dip in sales to 38,405 units. The Honda HR-V moved up a spot to second place with a 44 percent bump to 38,062 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales) slipped to third with a 481 percent leap to 37,588 units, within just 474 deliveries of second and 817 deliveries of first. The CX-30 jumped up several spots to fourth with a 43 percent swell to 28,496 units, while the Jeep Compass moved down a spot to place fifth with a 19 percent uptick to 27,647 units. The Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), the Trax’s corporate cousin and Chevy’s second segment entry, dropped to sixth with a 13 percent dip to 24,208 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields three entries. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a nine percent increase to 13,364 units. The Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s VSS-F platform mate, moved up to 14th place with 9,662 deliveries. The Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), with the discontinued model being indirectly replaced by the Envista, finished last with a 98 percent drop to 55 units. The discontinued Toyota C-HR and Ford EcoSport have both fallen off the list.

The Trax earned an 11 percent market share in its segment, up nine percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek and HR-V also each held an 11 percent segment share, with the Crosstrek down four percentage points and the HR-V up a point. The CX-30 and Compass both held an eight percent share, with the CX-30 up a point and the Compass maintaining its share. The Trailblazer earned a seven percent share, down three percentage points. The three other GM models in this space fared as follows:

  • Encore GX maintained a four percent share
  • Envista earned a three percent share
  • Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,877 deliveries. That was good for a 25 percent segment share, commanding a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly keep The General in first place overall. Huge Chevy Trax sales numbers have contributed greatly to this achievement.

Meanwhile, Hyundai – with the Kona and Venue – and Kia – with the Seltos, Niro, and Soul – saw a cumulative 63,696 deliveries, good for a combined 19 percent segment share, placing the Korean conglomerate behind GM in second place overall.

An argument can be made that the Kia Soul is not part of the segment in question but rather competes one segment below based on its size and price point. Removing the Soul from the Hyundai-Kia entries total nets 51,244 deliveries for a combined 15 percent segment share, keeping the conglomerate in second.

Out of the 10 manufacturers represented here, three field multiple models in this space of now 21 entries, though one of those models has been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 25 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 19 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Stellantis – 12 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Subaru – 11 percent share, one model
  • Honda – 11 percent share, one model
  • Mazda – eight percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, one model
  • Nissan – four percent share, one model
  • VW – three percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model

Lately, it seems that automakers fielding multiple entries in this segment enjoy better sales and higher deliveries, but those with a single model, including Subaru and Honda, seem to hold their own comparatively.

GM commanded first place again ahead of Hyundai Motor Group (which includes Kia) this quarter.

Overall, the mainstream subcompact crossover segment grew 24 percent to 343,607 units during Q1 2024, meaning Chevy Trax sales drastically outperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

The super Chevy Trax sales performance continues as the all-new model records its first full year of marketplace deliveries. And while it slipped a spot to third, it was within less than 500 deliveries of second and within about 800 or so units of first, being slightly outpaced by the Subaru Crosstrek and Honda CR-V.

Additionally, the next-generation 2024 Trax helped GM maintain its six percentage point segment share distance from the Hyundai-Kia conglomerate in terms of cumulative sales volume in the highly contested and crowded mainstream subcompact crossover segment to reign supreme again. Prior to the launch of the new model, GM and Hyundai-Kia sales were neck-and-neck in this space.

About Chevrolet Trax

GM debuted the next-generation 2024 Chevy Trax in late 2022 as the Bow Tie’s new entry-level crossover. It incorporates Chevy’s latest ICE-based design language, taking after the Chevy Blazer crossover.

The new 2024 Chevy Trax is roomier than the preceding model and offers more safety features and tech, including six advanced safety and driver awareness technologies via Chevy Safety Assist and a standard eight-inch diagonal infotainment screen. It offers five trim levels, including 1LS, 1RS, 1LT, 2RS, and Activ. The LT, 2RS, and Activ trims get an 11-inch screen. Active Noise Cancellation and Adaptive Cruise Control are offered on most trims.

The 2024 Chevy Trax’s turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH engine develops 137 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 162 pound-feet of torque at 2,500 to 4,000 rpm. According to the EPA, the 2024 Trax boasts improved fuel economy over the previous-generation 2022 Chevy Trax.

Since its debut, praise for the Bow Tie brand’s subcompact crossover has continued to pour in, and Chevy Trax sales have enjoyed outstanding growth as a result.

The 2024 Chevy Trax was one of 10 GM models among North American Car of the Year candidates, competing with six of those in the 2024 North American Utility Vehicle of the Year category. It won the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award and was named among Car and Driver’s 10Best Trucks and SUVs for 2024.

However, in January, Consumer Reports said the 2024 Chevy Trax was a vehicle to avoid.

The 2025 Chevy Trax debuts the second model year for the nameplate’s second generation, ushering in a few critical updates and changes. That includes two new paint colors and an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex fuel-capable vehicle.

Production of the 2025 Chevy Trax kicked off in March.

  1. I’m not knocking the Trax/Envista but it’s hysterical that folks just march into a Chevy or Buick dealership thinking they can’t get a lower price anywhere else and they can. Equinox, Tucson, Escape and Rogue can all be had for less due to decent discounting, which isn’t the case with the Trax/Envista. Outside of the West Coast, anyway.

  3. I really wanted to buy one. But either dealerships had an “additional dealer markup for additional profit which I refuse to pay or they just didn’t have any in stock. One dealership I visited claimed to have 82 in stock on their website, but 80 of them are “ in transit,” and the two in stock were used.

  7. We car shopped yesterday and tried the Trax and Envista for size and HATE the front seats. Short cushions, hard as nails and like elementary school size for anybody over 6′. We ended up with an Equinox instead.

  8. Bought a Trax LT in January after my 2015 Equinox was totalled in a car accident – My Trax handles nice but I miss my Equinox size and AWD potions but I wasn’t prepared to spend 9 k more than I got for my Trax – the Equinox models I shopped at various dealers ran into the 34k price with very limited finance options – so far no issues
