Electric vehicles offer a variety of unique technology and interesting features that pure ICE vehicles simply can’t, including one-pedal driving and regenerative braking. That includes Cadillac’s all-electric models, and now, Cadillac is giving us a quick rundown on one-pedal driving and regenerative braking and how the two systems work in the luxury marque’s EVs.
The video is a little under two-and-a-half minutes long, and includes and explanation of what the features are and how they work, with the Cadillac Lyriq provided as an example.
As highlighted in the video, one-pedal driving and regenerative braking work to extend vehicle range by making the overall all-electric propulsion system more efficient. The system works by leveraging the onboard electric motor (usually used to propel the vehicle) as a generator, sending energy back to the battery pack in the process.
Some Cadillac EVs are equipped with a Regen on Demand paddle on the steering wheel, as well as a One Pedal Driving button on the central infotainment display. Users have multiple levels of regenerative braking to choose from, with progressively higher levels of braking providing progressively greater levels of energy back to the battery.
To activate One Pedal Driving mode, tap the One Pedal Driving mode button on the central display, or use the infotainment screen to navigate to the Controls app, tap “See More Controls,” then select the “Drive and Park” options. Under the Drive and Park options menu, One Pedal Driving mode is available for activation, as is a “High” setting for greater levels of regenerative braking.
With One Pedal Driving activated, taking your foot off the throttle will result in the vehicle slowing down, eventually coming to a complete stop, all without touching the braking pedal – hence, “One Pedal Driving.” This mode will also activate the brake lights as it slows the vehicle, and will remain active until turned off.
“This mode takes some getting used to, but is the preferred method of driving for many EV customers,” the video explains.
For those drivers that want even more deceleration and regeneration, the Regen on Demand paddle can be used as well.
