The GM Authority Take

Cadillac CT5 sales were down for the second quarter in a row, continuing the reversal of a positive trend during the first three quarters of 2023. In spite of that, it maintained its seventh-place, mid-pack showing among 15 entries. Many of its rivals—namely BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Lexus, and Audi—keep beating the CT5 on a collective basis, with even Volvo beating it this time around.

Overall, Cadillac’s new-vehicle inventory rose in January, right at 60 days supply, which is generally considered optimal in the automotive industry, so we can’t really attribute poor sales performance to that. Interestingly, GM Authority sources indicate that GM builds roughly 1,000 units of the Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing and Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing a year.

The refreshed CT5 lineup will hit dealerships later this year, which may provide a much-needed boost to sales. Time, of course, will tell.

About Cadillac CT5

The 2024 Cadillac CT5 arrives as the fifth model year of the luxury four-door, offering up a few important changes and updates across the lineup compared to the preceding 2023 model year. That includes standard IntelliBeam headlamps across the entire CT5 for all trim levels. Furthermore, the 2024 model year gets a new Red Accent Package on the CT5, as does the CT5-V and the CT5-V Blackwing. Additionally, the 2024 CT5 Onyx Package will include a new decklid spoiler.

The 2024 Cadillac CT5-V and CT5-V Blackwing both get additional elements to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the V-Series sub-brand, namely a 20th Anniversary grille header decal and unique instrument cluster wake-up animation.

Here is what’s new and different for the 2024 Cadillac CT5, as well as the CT5-V and the CT5-V Blackwing.

The Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing won the Car and Driver 2024 10Best award, marking the high-performance luxury sedan’s third appearance on the annual list.

This past December, the 2024 Cadillac CT5 received a Recommended rating from Consumer Reports.

Overall, Cadillac ranked Average in the Consumer Reports 2024 Reliability Report, though it still placed above the average dependability of U.S. automakers.

Refreshed 2025 Cadillac CT5-V

This past September, GM debuted the refreshed 2025 Cadillac CT5, revealing new styling and tech along with more standard safety items. CT5 trim levels include Luxury, Premium Luxury, and Sport. Outside, we find contemporary styling with an updated front fascia and a lower, wider front grille. Inside, the refreshed CT5 features an all-new 33-inch touchscreen with 9K resolution and a customizable user interface.

In January, GM revealed the refreshed 2025 Cadillac CT5-V and updated Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing. For 2025, the GM Super Cruise semi-autonomous driver assist system is now included as standard on the CT5, CT5-V, and CT5-V Blackwing, when the latter is equipped with the optional automatic transmission.

The 2025 CT5 drops the Luxury trim level and the V Performance Package, but the 2025 Cadillac CT5-V Blackwing will continue offering Carbon Fiber Packages.

Production of the 2025 Cadillac CT5 has now been delayed to May 6th.

  1. Not going to sell what you really don’t care if you sell it. Same for CT4 and Malibu.

GM just doesn’t care. If it’s not some huge gas hog SUV or truck, they could care less.

  2. If you don’t buy it, it will be replaced with another 2 box SUV…

    1. Bob W: You hit the nail on the head. And this is kind of like the dog chasing it’s tail and never getting it. GM refuses to give us it’s all on any sedan (unlike what they do with the trucks and SUV’s). GM let’s them rot on the vine. GM hints that they will only be around for so long. GM keeps changing the names instead of keeping a will known name.

So why would anyone buy them? People don’t want to spend 30 or 40 or 50 grand or more just to learn that it’s been dropped the following week. And yet, last year alone, sedan sales (cars in both 2 and 4 door, convertible and hatch) sold well over 4 million units if you can find and include the numbers for the Tesla Model S and 3.

  4. In my opinion the problem is a complete lack of Marketing. Cadillac doesn’t advertise the CT5 and so it doesn’t sell. You’d think Cadillac would have learned a lesson from the CTS and the CT6. Neither were advertised and neither sold. By comparison, ALL of the competitors that are selling are heavily advertised. You can’t watch TV for any significant length of time without seeing an ad for BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Lexus. Advertising works !!!! Cadillac needs to fire its VP of Marketing and hire one that understands Marketing 101.

    1. It’s a little bit more than just the marketing. Cadillac needs new engineers in the electronics department. What a joke. With what you say about “Cadillac needs to fire its VP of Marketing and hire one that understands Marketing 101, ” I also say the same about the electronics.

  5. GM needs an edge vs the competition. Make the normally aspirated 6.2L the standard engine on the “V” and make it available on on the Luxury trim.

  6. The volume doesn’t justify very high marketing expenses that may or may not make a difference. Keep in mind that Cadillac is a Ch1nese and US brand while all main competitors are true world brands with significantly higher TOTAL world volumes.

    1. Wow DenMor. Did you actually read what you just said? The entire purpose of “marketing” is to promote and sell a product. If McDonald’s want people to know they offer a fish sandwich and not just burgers, how do they do that? Would the answer be to not promote it? Not to advertise it?

But you say they only sell a fraction of the fish sandwiches compared to the burgers. Why advertise it?

Your comment has me seriously scratching my head.

  7. Most companies “market their premium cars” instead of complaining that they aren’t selling themselves. Meanwhile Cadillac never fails to push their entire line of outdated SUV’s which are always discounted. “Hey GM, go watch how European manufacturers market their premium lines” because you really could learn a thing or two.

  8. Some potential CT5 buyers might have held off waiting for the 2025.

Cadillac + Buick used to sponsor a pro golf tournament. That was worth sales and advertising in front of people with $.

Cadillac dealers focus a lot on Escalade, V + BW and EVs and stock these.

  9. Maybe BMW sells more because of the available wood trim options or that it’s available in a coupe?

    Reply
    1. Wood Lover: Agree with you. Nothing screams cheap like opening the door to a brand new Cadillac Luxury trim CT4 or CT5 and having nasty silver or gray plastic trim looking like something out of a lego set. To get real wood trim, you have to jump up to the next level and then you get stuck with more stuff you don’t want or need.

I’m old enough to go back to the 70’s and 80’s where the car magazine crucified GM, Ford and Chrysler for using “fake wood trim” in their vehicles. I never agreed with that and feel it’s better looking than silver or gray or black plastic. So we can thank them for helping to kill the more plush interiors.

  10. I have a 2024 CT5, and I’m here to tell you that GM has inexperienced people working with electronics in this car. Old fossils need to be fired. What a joke. OnStar hasn’t changed a bit for the last 15 years. What’s up with that? I wish I hadn’t bought one. I am very disappointed with the technologies GM is putting out on the market today. 😖

  11. It might have to do with the refresh that’s coming. Why buy this when the upgraded version is right around the corner. The interior is outdated.

    Reply
  12. Time will tell if the 2025 CT5 price increase will hurt sales as there are many other offerings from other brands that consumers can get with the new CT5 price.
