Buick Electra-L Concept Electric Sedan Unveiled In China

General Motors has just unveiled the all-new, all-electric Buick Electra-L Concept sedan in China.

The automaker’s SAIC-GM joint venture in China officially revealed the all-new Buick Electra-L Concept during the opening ceremony of the 2024 Beijing International Automotive Exhibition (Auto China), which has just opened its doors in the capital of the Asian country. Buick’s new concept vehicle was developed locally and represents a preview of the brand’s future line of all-electric sedans in the Chinese market.

The Buick Electra-L Concept is the brand’s first all-electric vehicle based on the Ultium architecture with a four-door sedan body. In fact, the Electra-L Concept looks quite close to a production-ready vehicle and previews a future fully electric sedan manufactured in China that will join the growing family of zero-emission Electra vehicles.

Designed and developed by the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center (PATAC) in Shanghai, the Buick Electra-L Concept is a premium midsize to large sedan with low, sleek proportions that combines cutting-edge technology with the latest evolution of Buick’s sculptural styling cues. SAIC-GM says the Electra-L embodies “intelligent travel” of the future and will serve as inspiration for Buick’s upcoming three-box cars. The Electra-L’s styling seems to have been influenced by a cross between the Buick Wildcat EV Concept unveiled in 2022 and the Buick Proxima Concept that debuted in 2023.

The Buick Electra-L Concept’s body adopts distinctive features of the brand’s Pure Design language, with soft shapes and organic lines in a fastback-type sedan format. The well-sculpted front combines thin DRLs with jewel-type light clusters that fade towards the lower part of the bumper, while the rear is voluminous and very refined. The Electra-L Concept measures 198.3 inches long and rides on a 118.1-inch wheelbase.

For its part, the Buick Electra-L Concept sedan’s cabin boasts a highly technological and artisanal cutting-edge design, typical of a conceptual vehicle that represents future AI innovations for the brand’s advanced connectivity systems. While we notice some exterior details such as the doors without window frames or physical handles, and the cameras instead of rear-view mirrors, the interior is the most conceptual aspect of the Electra-L.

SAIC-GM says that the all-new Buick Electra-L Concept uses a rear-wheel drive powertrain system equipped with a single Ultium Drive propulsion engine generating an output of 255 kW or 342 horsepower, powered by an Ultium Battery pack of unspecified capacity. According to the company, this setup offers an electric range of more than 700 km (435 miles) based on the China light-duty vehicle test cycle (CLTC) standard.

  1. I guess the interior is a modern concept, but, sorry, my first impression of the exterior is a warmed-over Buick Regal, with the new front end slapped on and then made distorted. The recent Buick Proxima Concept looked better than this.

    1. I’d take this any day over that warmed over Toyota styled new Enclave the US is getting. And there was nothing wrong with the Regal either. I’d happily see them sitting on Buick showrooms today.

    2. Proxima is the ultimate Genericar GT Bro-Ham Deluxe. This at least has a bit of distinctiveness to it.

  2. I love it! I just wish it was unveiled in the States instead of China. Why does China get all of Buicks cool looking cars?

    1. “Why does China get all of Buicks cool looking cars?”

Because more Chinese are buying Buicks than Americans, duh.

      1. Perhaps if Buick offered vehicles other that crossovers in the US, they would have more sales also.

        1. Buick offered vehicles other than crossovers, you just didn’t buy them…
          Remember Lacrosse, Regal/Tour X, Verano?!

          1. How do you know I didn’t?

        2. Why do you think Ford discontinued sedan sales in the US? Because they weren’t selling here. On the other hand, China has no problem buying American designed sedans, so GM is obviously catering to them.

You can do your part and go buy a GM-built sedan today!

          1. Ford discontinued sedans because their upper management sucks.

  3. Concept of course, but I would LOVE this car with some toned down version of the front end and revamp the dash and screens.

    But of course, for China.

  4. Where are the pics of the Electra – LT? It’s a wagon version and both are quite stunning.

The passenger screen is a great idea to have it stow away completely versus so many screens.

  5. Interior is too plain for me. Why does every electric car need to copy Tesla’s barren interior theme. Especially out of place for a Buick branded vehicle.

  6. Nice car. Interior looks like an expensive golf cart, but I feel the same about the Tesla interior, too. Awful. Put a proper engine in it with a driver’s interior and I would definitely have this on my short list. That said, I hope our politicians kindly point Ms Barra to the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party the next time GM needs a bailout.

  7. It looks like a contemporary CT5 and not in a good way. Way to bland inside and out. Buick can do better. How about a Riviera to compliment the Wildcat??

  8. I only like it, could’ve been a little bit less frumpy but a good effort. How about using a designer in NA to style the vehicle on the same platform?

  9. I like the taillight treatment and the sculpted hood. But the side profile leaves alot to desire imo. Might be due to the over-stylized front end that it takes away from the rest?
