Toyota has teased the all-new 2025 Toyota 4Runner with a new video previewing the next-generation off-road SUV’s power-operated rear window. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner will have its formal introduction next week, dropping cover on Tuesday, April 9th. At present, GM does not offer a direct rival to the next-gen 4Runner.
The new teaser video was posted to social media, and is only a few seconds long. In the video, we see the rear of the new 2025 Toyota 4Runner, which is closely cropped to only show a portion of the rear tailgate, the Toyota badge, and the rear power-operated window. The video shows the window sliding down, revealing the April 9th debut date, before sliding back up.

In addition to a look at the power-operated rear window, the teaser video also provides a preview of the next-gen SUV’s interior. The power rear window is operated via controls mounted in the headliner, while the infotainment spec appears to include the same 14.0-inch infotainment screen as new Toyota Tacoma. This latter bit should come as no surprise, given the next-gen 4Runner will share a platform with the new Tacoma.
Also notable is the interior upholstery, which shows off a rich, brown color. The exterior is finished in bright blue paint.
“A window to bigger worlds and adventures is just around the corner,” Toyota announced with the release of the new teaser video. “Stay tuned for more #4Runner updates.”
At present, GM does not offer a direct rival for the next-generation 4Runner. Per an exclusive GM Authority report, GM canceled plans to develop a new body-on-frame off-roader based on the now-canned 32XX truck platform. The new vehicle was originally expected to carry the GMC Jimmy nameplate. Instead, GM opted to produce an updated version of the 31XX platform, which is now used as the underpinnings for the current third-ge Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon.

Why is gm so scared to play in this field ? Besides the pickups, there’s nothing off-road about any other vehicles besides pickups an full size suvs. A modern day blazer or jimmy would wipe the floor with the new 4Runner butttt …
The future is electric baby. Hummer EV SUV
This potentially an easy entry for GM if they can use Colorado platform and Hummer name plate ( H3) ( it will serve rival for Wrangler as well as 4runner. I think chevy initially wanted a new plate ( beast ) using the colorado ISV style (so GMC can keep H3 Plate ) but i assume they dropped.
As to why GM had developed a Colorado platform Trailblazer in Australia and leave us with a 3 cylinder Walmart blazer is beyond me. Only trails they will experience is the painted lines in the parking lot.
They should have done this 10 years ago..
Now you got 4 CUV’s and 3 SUV’s. Though a RWD/4WD mid size compact would be more idea, it would bleed into the Traverse market. But.l they bleed into each other’s segments anyways with more the one option so I don’t see why this would be any different. I get the sales objective info. And people like options and they kind of work their way around all the cross segments and potential buyers.
Colorado was discontinued and people were saying that GM didn’t need to enter the midsize again because the Tacoma has reigned supreme. And it may never reach the sales leader. But they made it any way and they are doing well with it.
My point is, people will come and say it’s pointless and wouldn’t sell. But those same people would said the same about the Colorado.
To Travis’ point, it wouldn’t sell in the numbers they think. Listen, the amount of people who take these off road is in the single digit percentage (even the wrangler is only about a 3rd last I read). A vehicle like this does poorly on the road and is traded in a short time later after realizing how bad it is at daily driving compared to a more road focused model. This is why you are seeing the offroad looking packages on CUV’s, get the look with all the on road benefits. The 4runner sold a little over 100k units, not exactly a large market to go after. The Colorado was brought in with the raising costs of full sizes to bridge the gap. With 20% less cost and size you can see why the midsize market has taken off. Thing is while the truck market had no smaller alternatives, the SUV’s do have that with an abundance of CUV’s to come at a lower cost and nearly as much room.
There is so much that goes in to this, just because a very small group of enthusiasts want one doesn’t mean it will see in most cases. You see it all the time with sports cars and specialty models. That is why a Wrangler fighter won’t come as the sales just aren’t there for a niche market. Money talks, and a few guys on the internet saying they’d buy them doesn’t transition in to sales.
Most people who buy Broncos, Wranglers, 4 Runners, and Grand Cherokees never take them off road.
Agreed Tigger.
These 4×4’s are all over LA – people love em!
They sell like hotcakes…high owner loyalty too.
If its $$$ they are worried about, GM could spread the cost out across the different makes, something they used to do better than anyone.
The only reason 4runners are REALLY popular is because of their “so-called” reliability, although there is tradeoff with everything else. Like other cars, they have their own problems (serious and minor) which their loyalists fail to admit or do not want to admit.
The new one: I DO NOT think it will reach that mark so fast- considering the broken Tacoma which TFL had that got damaged in extremely light conditions, which shares a lot of parts with it.
CAFE is the killer of this market for GM. Maybe with more hybrids, especially in SUVs, they could reenter, but GM just sells too many Tahoes and Yukons — along with trucks — to be able to offer a fighter in this segment and not get whacked over the head by the CAFE fine bat (they already get their knuckles rapped as-is).
NHTSA and EPA are why this vehicle market doesn’t exist for GM.
Of course, GM abandoned the small car and sedan markets, so some of their CAFE woes are their own doing…
And it does not help that Barra and Farley have their heads up Biden’s and Newsome’s backside.
Don’t forget … they’re in bed with China while their heads are up there! 😂
I want one.
GM needs to shut down Buick and get away from all the goofy electronics that some people want and the masses actually don’t or at least till they figure it all out , a radio with the headlights incorporated in it that the can’t figure out in the Colorado and Canyons, some is good but to much is not, Toyota Tacoma outsold GM truck with the Tacoma even without a power seat and other toys, not taking up for Tacoma because I actually hate Tacomas, and will never buy from a foreign brand company, the only thing I want is to have cornering light like the Cadillac & Lincoln had in 60 &70’s
The manufacturer will not listen unfortunately. As for the electronics, they will work it out.
GM needs to compete in these segments. I am not sure why they haven’t moved GMC to be the off road brand, similar to Jeep, just look at their naming, already perfect to go all in on. Make a Wrangler, Bronco, 4Runner competitor by making an SUV version of the Canyon. They should also take the Blazer chassis and make it into a rugged off roader to compete with the Grand Cherokee, all of a sudden they have a new Jimmy. Then do a cheap GMC model of the Trailblazer with actual off road equipment like lockers or a torque vectoring system like the Bronco Sport incorporates.
