With the truck’s reservation period beginning in Brazil, General Motors has just revealed that the updated 2025 Chevy S10 debuts a new generation of powertrain.
The automaker revealed all the features of the 2025 Chevy S10, including the revised powertrain that stands out with technological innovations promising to reinforce the mechanical leadership of the S10 in Brazil. The new-generation 2.8L I4 Duramax turbodiesel engine’s block is not only manufactured locally for the first time, but it’s now managed by artificial intelligence (AI) to substantially improve the performance of the midsize pickup.
“Artificial intelligence is capable of processing hundreds of simulations per microsecond, also considering the condition of engine components to find the closest ideal calibration parameter,” said Chief Engineer at 2025 Chevy S10, Fabio Daumichen. “This brings an unprecedented advantage by being able to combine performance, fuel consumption, drivability and emissions,” he added.
In particular, GM Brazil states that the new generation of the 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel engine debuting the updated 2025 Chevy S10 adopts advances in hardware and software that raise the pickup’s performance to a new level within its segment. The engine generates a maximum output of 207 horsepower and 376 pound-feet of torque, a notable output improvement over the 200 horsepower and 369 pound-feet of the outgoing 2.8L I4 XLD28 engine.
The updated 2.8L Duramax turbodiesel engine in the 2025 Chevy S10 is mated exclusively to GM’s new eight-speed automatic transmission that debuted in the Chevy Colorado, but the company reports that it has been recalibrated to meet the requirements of Brazilian customers. This powertrain enables the 2025 S10 to accelerate to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.4 seconds and deliver a competitive combined fuel economy rating of 10.5 km/l or 24.7 mpg.
The fully updated 2025 Chevy S10 is now available for reservation in the brand’s official dealer network in Brazil, the country of origin and only manufacturing center of the pickup worldwide. The new-generation powertrain will come as standard equipment at least in the most equipped Crew Cab versions of the 2025 S10 for the Brazilian market, as the mechanical configuration of the Single Cab and Chassis Cab models remains to be revealed.

“AI” is truly intelligence. Can’t wait for this buzzword to be put to bed. All this is, is CAD+excel+wolf ram alpha. It’s just optimization.
The 2.8 really needs to be put to rest. Its head can’t accept larger injectors without compromising balance size. It’s the 350 vortex of diesels. It’s dependable….. and that sums it up. Glad we have the 2.7 up here. the 2.7 should end up as dependable as the Ecotech engines that were before it. The 2.2/2.4/2.5 were phenomenal engines
Great to here the 8 speed is there now
“Isn’t truly intelligence “
Exactly, AI is not intelligence.
Simply a sophisticated software program.
As a satisfied owner of a 2019 Colorado Crew Cab WT, V6 4×4, in Florida. I know a guy with the same tras I but with the DuraMax 2.8/6speed automatic. That he had deleted and all cleaned up with EGR gone along with DEF, with a straight pipe from turbo to resonator in the tailpipe. With a tune and CAI. That all together gets him 28 city 35 highway running pump diesel. As far as power goes yea he does have more, but still not enough to out accelerate my gas truck in any way, empty, loaded or towing similar 5,600 lbs travel trailers. Although at half the rpm’s, but with no passing reserve, while also getting 16 mpg towing as I am lucky to see 12 mpg.
Hmm, diesel truck for an ethanol country, will it run at least on biodiesel.
Chinese automakers are going to start selling electric trucks soon.
Chevrolet should consider re-certification of this motor for California
GM engineers continue to impress. Hopefully, GM will sell this diesel pickup worldwide.
Interesting to same the “AI” offers an improvement, but minimal power change and the fuel economy rating is not substantially better than before. I hope the ne wsoftware has real world improvements for more responsiveness, more power throughout the rev range, or being able to choose more efficient routes of upshifting earlier or holding a gear until acceleration is done. Honestly, the power density of this engine is pathetic compared to other engines, so maybe time to use the 1.6L Whisper or 3.0L LM2/LZ0 tech to make an appropriate sized engine for the output needed to get better efficiency.
Wow, “AI” calibration found 7 more horsepower and 7 more lb-ft of torque! An astounding 3.5% improvement in horsepower! I bet they are happy about all the money and time they spent developing the “AI” calibration with results like this!
I wonder why AI didn’t just tell the engineers to drop a 4.8 LS engine in the truck and make it useful.
The 4.8? The 3.6 makes similar power at higher rpm’s but gets much better economy. I had a van with the 4.8, that sounded an ran great, but got less mileage and struggled fully loaded, especially compared with the 6.0 in another van in the fleet.
I’d be thrilled to see a 5.3, 6.0, or the 6.2 ls in these pickups, but I was being cautious by mentioning the 4.8.
Just what I want, more complex computers in my car…
The 2.8 should find its way into small GM SUV’s! Please….
Something wrong with those mpg or km/l numbers
My 2018 Colorado diesel 2.8 gets 8.8 combined. And those HP and torque numbers are barely an improvement.
GM should have hardened this engine when it was available in North America instead of dropping it.
There is a reason the 3.0 diesel is so popular and it’s called torque and amazing mpg.
I love my Colorado diesel. And tow heavy a lot.
GM you fked up
Wtf looks like a Toyota, where is the square body look of the S10. And the 4.3 v6 gas engine. You need to go back to things that were reliable like steel bumpers and manual transmission.
Sorry to burst your bubble but the 8 speed transmissions come with no warranty. I have a letter from GM stating that under no circumstances they will fix my transmission. So now i have a piece of junk sitting in my driveway that i cant even sell and i am still making payments on it. So stay away from these transmissions
