2024 Chevy Tahoe, Suburban Drive Modes Explained

Utility vehicles like the 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban should be able to handle a wide variety of tasks and conditions. To that end, these full-size models are equipped with configurable Driver Mode technology. Essentially, these drive mode settings allow users to tailor onboard systems to better tackle things like snow and ice, off-roading, or towing. Now, GM Authority is taking a closer look at the 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban drive modes with the following explainer.

The 2024 Chevy Suburban and 2024 Chevy Tahoe offer multiple drive modes to suit the conditions at hand.

The 2024 Chevy Tahoe and 2024 Chevy Suburban Driver Mode Control knob can be found on the instrument cluster to the left of the steering wheel, allowing users to switch between the various modes offered. The drive modes that are available depend on the vehicle trim level. A unique and persistent indicator is displayed in the instrument panel to indicate the current drive mode.

Normal Mode

As one might expect, Normal Mode is the default setting and is ideal for everyday city and highway driving, providing a smooth ride with a balance between comfort and handling. To note, Normal Mode does not include a persistent indicator in the instrument cluster.

Sport Mode

Sport Mode provides a more engaging drive experience and controlled response. It achieves this by automatically down-shifting the transmission while enabling Performance Shift Features when spirited driving is detected. Lower transmission gears are held for increased engine braking and sharper acceleration. This mode also includes a sharper steering response.

Snow / Ice Mode

When the temperatures drop, Snow / Ice Mode adjusts throttle response to optimize traction on slippery surfaces.

Off-Road Mode

Vehicle owners who like to take the road less traveled can use Off-Road Mode. It’s ideal for driving on grass, gravel, dirt, unpaved roads, or snow-covered roads. This mode also affects ride height and the traction control system.

Tow / Haul Mode

Naturally, some drivers will want to use their 2024 Chevy Tahoe or 2024 Chevy Suburban to tow and haul. As such, Tow / Haul Mode adjusts the transmission shift pattern, steering, and stability control system to suit such activities better. Moreover, vehicles equipped with a diesel engine will activate exhaust braking to help slow the vehicle.

Terrain Mode

Terrain Mode is best suited for very rough roads and very low speeds, such as two-track and heavily rutted surfaces. This mode is also useful for pulling a boat from the water on a trailer. The mode includes a unique pedal map, transmission shift pattern, adjusted ride height, and eLSD settings. To activate, press the Terrain mode button near the Mode selector knob.

2024 Chevy Tahoe and Suburban Terrain Mode Settings
Terrain Mode Drive Select Expected Vehicle Behavior Ideal Terrain
Drive (L3-Lx) Minor deceleration when off throttle and mild ability to modulate throttle; mimics performance of 4L without torque multiplication. Grassy fields, mild two tracks, rutted roads, large rolling hills
L2 Moderate deceleration when off throttle and moderate ability to modulate throttle; brings vehicle to a stop in most cases. Mild rock crawling, heavy ruts, short, steeper grades
L1 Significant deceleration when off throttle and significant ability to modulate throttle; brings vehicle to a stop in most cases. Rock crawling downhill

  1. modes dont affect anything really unless you have the cadillac wanna be trim with the adj suspension.

transmission shift points ive never noticed a difference. trans holding gears also never noticed a difference. in normal mode if you throw it hard enough it will begin to hold gears regardless of it being in normal mode.

    tldr basically a gimmick
