The Xfinity Series race at Circuit of the Americas (COTA) on March 23rd, 2024 came down to a three-way battle between three NASCAR Chevy teams on the last lap – and the No. 17 Camaro SS of Kyle Larson came out on top.
Shane Van Gisbergen’s No. 97 Camaro and Austin Hill’s No. 21 Camaro were the other two adversaries in the last-lap fight. Van Gisbergen had led 20 laps and held control on the restart for an attempt at NASCAR Overtime with Hill hot on his tail, but the No. 97 Camaro went wide, allowing Hill the opening he needed to sweep in and take the lead.
Van Gisbergen kept on Hill’s bumper, beating and banging as Larson lurked behind them. Eventually, the contact between the two proved too tough to overcome, and Larson snuck past, leading only the final lap on his way to victory. Van Gisbergen crossed the line in second with Hill trailing him in third. However, Van Gisbergen was penalized for shortcutting the track and was scored 27th, giving Hill the runner-up position.
“That last restart, he just drove through me at [Turn] 1. I guess that’s how it is here,” Van Gisbergen said after the race. “I just stood up for myself. But it was some pretty awesome racing with AJ, Kyle and at the end it just turned into a mess. But that’s how it is. Really fun but wish we could’ve got the lead, but Kyle just snuck in there.”
Larson, meanwhile, celebrated his win in the No. 17 NASCAR Chevy.
“It feels really special because seems like every time we’ve run the 17 car – any of us four [Hendrick Motorsports] drivers – we’re always fast on track and somehow give it away,” Larson said. “Today I was definitely not the fastest, but we were patient. I knew the 21 [Hill] had shoved SVG [van Gisbergen] through [Turn] 1 and if he got to him it could get dicey… I was just trying to be patient.”
