Justin Allgaier’s No. 7 NASCAR Chevy Camaro SS was the car to beat during the Xfinity Series race at Phoenix on March 9th, 2024. With five laps to go, he’d all but checked out from the field. His three-second lead looked nearly insurmountable, and likely would have been, if the No. 7 Camaro hadn’t blown a tire.
The left-rear tire appeared to lose pressure as Allgaier headed out of Turn 4, finally letting go as he dove into Turn 1. It went totally flat and shredded from the wheel, sending the No. 7 Camaro hard into the wall. The wreck ended Allgaier’s day, and he was relegated to a 29th-place finish as the race went into Overtime without him.
“Not a lot of good emotions to be honest with you at the moment,” Allgaier said after being released from the infield care center. “Just proud of the effort. Proud of everybody at JR Motorsports. I mean, everybody at GM and Chevrolet have been working really hard and everybody at JR Motorsports is working really hard. It just seems like this is the story of our year so far.”
He added, “We’ve had really fast Camaros every week and just nothing to show for it. I think the heartbreaker from today was being that far out, knowing that we had the car to win at the end there.”
Chandler Smith went on to win in the No. 81 Toyota TRD Supra, followed by the No. 2 NASCAR Chevy Camaro of Jesse Love.
