GMC Sierra And Yukon Recalled For Incorrect Catalytic Converter Service Part

The 2022 to 2023 GMC Sierra pickup, the 2022 to 2023 GMC Yukon, and the 2022 to 2023 GMC Yukon XL are covered by a voluntary emissions recall GM just issued for several models which may have had an incorrect catalytic converter installed.

The problem: the incorrect catalytic converter installed previously on affected GMC Sierra, GMC Yukon, and GMC Yukon XL units may cause the pickups or SUVs to fail matching up with proper emissions standards.

The hazards: the affected vehicles may not match up to required emissions standards because of the improper catalytic converter fitted to their exhaust systems, which could cause failure of an emission test.

The fix: prior to starting replacement of the catalytic converter, service personnel at the dealership should use the GM Global Warranty Management system to verify the GMC Sierra or GMC Yukon is involved in the recall. If the Investigate Vehicle History screen is marked as “Open” the specific vehicle is affected and the repair can proceed.

Correcting the problem involves removing the current, incorrect converter and installing a new 6.2L V8 L87 engine 3-way catalytic converter in its place.  Approximately 1 hour and 36 minutes of labor is needed to complete the fix according to GM estimates, with reimbursement available for customers as necessary.

Affected components: catalytic converter. The GMC Sierra and GMC Yukon units affected by this problem are those which are powered by the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, rated at 420 horsepower and 460 pound-feet of torque.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: the total number of affected vehicles is not specified in The General’s voluntary emission recall. Per the recall, dealerships with affected GMC Sierra or GMC Yukon units must hold the vehicles until the vehicles have been repaired. The pickups and SUVs may not be sold, delivered, traded to other dealers, or used in product demonstrations until the correct fix has been applied.
