Workers at the GM Silao plant in Mexico have received a 9.2-percent wage hike.
Per a report from Reuters, the wage hike was announced last week by a labor union representing General Motors workers employed at the facility. In addition to the wage hike, workers also received an increase to the savings fund and food vouchers.
The report also notes that Audi has reached an agreement with its union this year that increases wages by seven percent.
The 9.2-percent wage increase for workers at the GM Silao plant in Mexico trails the 10-percent wage hike seen last year. As GM Authority covered previously, The General agreed to the 10-percent increase last year following negotiations with the SINTTIA union. The 10-percent increase was one of the largest salary hikes in the automotive sector in Mexico, following on the back of rising inflation.
The SINTTIA union was established followed the ousting of the Miguel Trujillo Lopez union in place prior following allegations that the Miguel Trujillo Lopez union had not campaigned on behalf worker interests. After workers held a vote to recognize which labor union would represent their interests, Mexican labor officials discovered irregularities that favored the existing Miguel Trujillo Lopez union. American labor officials assisted in a second vote that subsequently established the SINTTIA union.
One of the union’s first actions was to negotiate a pay raise, targeting a 19.2-percent pay increase that would have brought the hourly wage to 77.15 pesos per hour ($4.58 at current exchange rates). However, GM and the union eventually agreed on an 8.5-percent pay increase.
The GM Silao plant employs roughly 6,500 workers, producing the Chevy Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks. The facility is considered GM’s largest manufacturing plant in Mexico, spanning some 26.5 million square feet.

So the new wage is $4.02 US/ hour. What do the UAW and CAW make in their new contracts? Easy to see why Mexico is one of the best places in the world to make cars.
Best places to make cars for who? Definitely not Americans. Just the corporations who pay slave wages.
Who cares what happens in Mexico, people keep buying GM and they don’t even pay attention to where there vehicle was assembled. Ford is next to move truck assembly to Mexico I am sure.
Ram diesel trucks are made in Mexico
And it’s easy enough to do, just check the window sticker. It will tell you where the final assembly took place. I check it every time I look at a vehicle. I check them ahead of time online. If it isn’t on there, I ask. If they can’t answer me, I’m done.
Yet MSRP the same no matter where it’s assembled for same models, ex. Silverados.
Yes. Those labor savings don’t translate to consumer savings, so I wish people would quit thinking that it does.
Davy, excellent point, you are right on.
