GM Invests $23M In Charlotte Parts Distribution Center Upgrade

GM has announced its plans to invest $23 million in its Charlotte, North Carolina-based Customer Care and Aftersales (CCA) facility.

Intended to be used to increase workplace safety and modernize operations, this funding effort has three specific parts to it, including:

  • Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) – a grid-like storage and retrieval system that utilizes machines to pull specific parts from shelving. This will reduce the need for manual lifting from employees and is expected to increase storage capacity by 11 percent.
  • Robotics and conveyance systems – work to bring sorted materials to employees, thus reducing the amount of repetitive movements for employees.
  • Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs) – will bring employees orders to complete final shipping processes for dealership orders.

“We are investing in our warehouse operations to proactively address the growing number of vehicles on the road and better support our customers and dealers,” GM Global Vice President, Customer Care and Aftersales David Marsh claimed in a prepared statement. “Our goal is to create an environment which minimizes ergonomic stressors on our employees while they continue to deliver the right part, to the right place, at the right time to our customers.”

It’s worth noting that this facility is actually smaller than a typical General Motors distribution center, yet is among the highest in regard to volume with more than 40,000 parts stocked. As such, increasing the efficiency at the facility is vital to maintaining organization and ensure workplace safety.

“We’re genuinely excited about GM’s investment in our facility, a significant step towards easing the ergonomic stress on our workers,” UAW 2404 Shop Chairman Darrell Turlington remarked. “This investment highlights our dedication to improving workplace conditions and bolsters our ability to continue growing and serving our customers with unwavering commitment. Together, we’re moving towards a more efficient and supportive future.”

Notably, these systems are currently scheduled to begin installation in June 2024, and expected to be operational by August 2025.
