Back in February 2024, GM issued a recall for select units of the Chevy Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups due to a faulty tailgate. Affecting trucks in both U.S. and Canadian markets, The General has now expanded the number of units covered under this recall.
Tagged with recall number N232426400, affected trucks may have a condition where the electronic gate-release switch on the tailgate may short circuit due to water intrusion, which could cause the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park. If the tailgate where to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, thus increasing the risk of a crash.
Originally, there was a total of 545,722 Silverado and Sierra units covered by this recall across both North American markets.
Now, this number has been ballooned to a total of 819,566 units affected. More specifically, there are 311,368 Chevy Silverado units and 259,066 GMC Sierra units covered by this recall in the United States, along with another 249,132 pickups in Canada.
It’s worth noting that there is still a stop-delivery order in effect.
Of course, the Detroit-based automakers will notify owners of affected vehicles via letter and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. Any owners that are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall can visit my.gm.com/recalls or my.gm.ca/gm/en/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on it. Owners can also reach out to Chevy, GMC, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), or Transport Canada directly with any questions or concerns they may have.

That’s a lot of trucks to repair.
It’s almost certainly many more vehicles than this that have the power tailgate. We’ve seen plenty of reports on GM forums etc. of people getting to their next destination only to find their tailgates open. What’s worse is many of the tonneau cover designs hinder the tailgate from dropping free. Which means if it unlatches on it’s own, you won’t see it because it can’t free drop, but as soon as you start driving it’s going to fall open. Now you could say just make sure you’re tailgate is closed every time you get in the truck, but is that really acceptable on a $60-100$k truck…….imagine if you told suv owners that you had to open/close every door every time you drove to make sure they were latched.
I’d be willing to bet it’s highly unlikely that this is just a problem with a batch of switches, it likely impacts every trucks sold with this feature since the design was added in 2019-2020.
They could do a software update to help this, and simply add warning pop-up if the tailgate is open that does not go away. Similar to if a door isn’t fully closed.
These aren’t power tailgates. GMC does not offer a power up/down tailgate in any trim level – so it’s clearly units with the “multi-pro” tailgate….which is not power up/down.
Not (only) mult-pro – the article clearly says “power release” – Many trim levels – even down to LT have power release….
Not power up/down – this is POWER RELEASE. Probably affects power up/down as well since they also have power release…
Right, but in your original comment you said ‘power tailgate’
If the switches weren’t properly sealed against water intrusion, this is very likely the only cause.
Mine did it once. 2024 Silverado.
I’ve had this dropping down issue for six months now with my 2023 AT4 1500. Installed a catch net across the back just in case as we do not want items spilling out on to the road. Took the truck in just a three weeks ago to the dealer and they said it needed a switch replaced and it’s on order.
Update, once installed I have not had the tailgate drop at all… I still use the safety net just in case until I’m satisficed the problem has gone away, give it 6 months at least.
I have a 2020 Silverado, High Country, that I bought new in 2020. It has a power up or down tailgate from the factory. The problem is that the tailgate literally fills with gallons of water when I forget to close it (rains a lot here). Sometimes it is so heavy with water the power closer won’t work and I can barely lift it manually. When I close it, water pours out the bottom. I complained to the dealer about it and they would not even look at it. I told them I was concerned that the electronic latching, raising/lowering mechanisms, and the camera were located in the tail gate. What happens when they get wet?
Two days ago, my rear-view camera stopped working intermittently. I have made an appointment for them to diagnose the problem. I just saw the recall notice about the electronic latch malfunction. GM says they will be replacing the latch/switch mechanism to one that is “more water resistant”. I’m no genius, but I think know what the bigger problem is.
They need to have drain holes in the tailgate and to seal the switch in a rubber sort of jacket or slip on cover to keep the water from damaging the switch. I should be in charge of the Delphi engineering division that was spun off of GM.
Why are the 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 Denali Model tailgates not being recalled? It is the same tailgate as the ones they are recalling. I have the same problem that the 2500 and 3500’s are having.
I have a 2022 Chevy Silverado 1500 and I had the same problem with the tailgate. It is a company vehicle and I had to take it out of service from July 2023 till the part came in. It look 7 months to finally get the part and I had to pay 679.00. This should be a recall for Silverado 1500 with the flex gate also!!!
Report a safety problem: If enough people send issues with the tailgate on Silverado, Sierra, and Denali truck tailgates maybe they will do something about it. Here is the link to NHTSA website for filing a complaint.

I am also contacting the area manager for GM.
I took my 2019 Equinox in for an oil change. It has 30,000 easy miles on it.The Nissan dealer was A Chevy dealer where I bought the car. I was told that there was oil leaking a bit where the hose entered the cooler. They now tell me that there are some leaks around gaskets inside. The estimate went to about $2,400, not counting a 9% tax. Is that realistic? Are there or have there been recalls or adjustments? Things like this shouldn’t happen at this tpoint. I bought my first Chevy when I was in high school. It was a 1938, give or take a year. It was used and less than $90, but it ran for a long time. I have to consider Larry, I can’t trust this car for travel this summer. Like Boeing, I wonder where this oil cooler came from. Help Larry M
I have a 2021 sierra at the tailgate comes unlatched while driving a when it is sitting garage. Gettel Chevy from Punta Gorda Florida keeps telling me there isn’t anything wrong. I piuchesed it new and told them a number of times. Also it has the small deuramax and quite often it times out from starting and again gettel tells me they can’t find problem. Sure wish someone can help resolve the problems
If you go to KBB.com or other places on the web you enter you vin number to see if there is a recall out for the tailgate problem. My 2020 Chevy has a recall listed for the problem. GM has not sent out the recall notice to each truck owner yet. It is caused by water intrusion into the inside of the tailgate. Make sure they fix the water intrusion problem when the time comes.
