Elderly Man In Chevy Silverado Drives Off Highway Overpass: Video

A Chevy Silverado driver survived a tumble off a highway overpass after accidentally driving down the wrong way towards oncoming traffic in New York State. The driver was apparently suffering from a medical emergency. Video of the incident was captured by a nearby motorist and recently published to social media.

A Chevy Silverado driving down the wrong way on the highway.

Video of the incident made its way to reddit, where the original post states that the driver behind the wheel of the Chevy Silverado may be suffering from dementia. The incident occurred in Albany County, New York, and incredibly, no other motorists were injured, while the driver behind the wheel of the Silverado suffered only minor injuries.

In the video, we see a rainy highway, with the video captured from what appears to be a camera phone held by a motorist traveling down the adjacent side of the freeway. As the video gets underway, we see wet conditions and low light, with the headlights on the other vehicles turned on. As the individual with the camera travels down the road, a Chevy Silverado comes into focus.

The Silverado is seen traveling down the shoulder on the other side of the highway, hugging the guardrail as traffic zips by. Despite this, the Silverado driver apparently missed colliding with an oncoming vehicle, which surely would have resulted in a massive accident.

As the vehicle with the camera zooms in, we see the Chevy Silverado slam on the brakes. The pickup travels through a gap in the barrier, but the truck doesn’t stop. As the camera vehicle passes the Silverado, we see the front end fall away as the truck plummets off the highway.

Reports indicate the truck fell 20 feet to the road below, landing on its roof. Luckily, the driver walked away with only minor injuries, and police indicate that no drugs or alcohol were involved.

  1. I wonder if he has adult children? My wife and her siblings was able to get their mom to stop driving after she would get chronically lost due to cognitive decline.

    1. A medical emergency can happen at any age.Your assuming his age was responsible.I’m 82 years old and I probably drive better and safer than you do.Raced cars for many years and drive very defensively.I’m constantly checking traffic and road situations around me.

      2. I don’t see how a medical emergency would put you on the wrong side of the guardrail actively driving on the shoulder to avoid oncoming traffic and then slamming on the brakes when you realize you’re out of road. You get there by entering the wrong way on an exit ramp or turning into the wrong lanes at an intersection. He obviously knew he needed to drive on the right side of the road, but he must not have not understood he was on the shoulder rather than a traffic lane.

  3. Doug just proved the point that there’s an age at which people need to stop driving. If you know that you can have a medical emergency at any time then you shouldn’t be driving. I understand that people don’t want to lose their freedom, but at the end of the day you’re putting other people’s lives in jeopardy. I’m a truck driver and I bet you’re one of the people who start to slow down the closer I get to you, even though I’m trying to keep a safe distance. We end up slowing down the rest of the highway, and now you have an 80000lbs missile stuck behind you and you think you’re driving safe…

    1. A 16 year old is capable of realizing that they could have a medical emergency….should THEY stop driving, too? All of us posting here know that we could have a medical emergency at any time, should WE all stop driving? Medical emergencies don’t care about your age, young or old.

  4. Life is full of risk. People do dumb things all the time. And nobody needs another mom or government agency telling us what to do. If your afraid you might get hurt out there… Just lock yourselves away inside and wear a frown. You could build one of those intricate train sets, with houses, and people, and make it your own perfect draconic atmosphere. (And I’m not poking fun at you personally but I deal with an abundance of truck drivers, surprised they got through their physical?)

  5. Medical emergencies don’t care about your age? Bull $#!+. Are you telling me that a 16 year old is as likely to have a heart attack or stroke as an 80 year old or is as likely to have forgotten how to drive due to dementia?

    1. A 16 year old can have a heart attack, yes. Dementia isn’t a sudden medical emergency, not comparable. No need to swear, btw. Never said a 16 year old was just as likely to have an incident as your 80-year old, but it could happen. We never know when our number is up, that was my point, NOT the health status of any given age.

  6. Anyone who has a severe medical condition that has the potential to flare up while they’re driving, SHOULDN’T BE DRIVING. Again I’m a truck driver. We have to get a medical card every other year to make sure that we won’t have a medical emergency while we’re driving. If a 16 year old has a serious heart condition then no they probably shouldn’t be driving. This is common sense and I’m aware that it’s not that common anymore but it makes complete sense. I’m just stating the facts.

  7. I’m not for big government or anything like that I’m just for common sense. I’m sure when I’m 80 someone will have to peel me away from my car too, so I understand the viewpoint, but that doesn’t mean it’s right. And I’m not the 300lbs truck driver I’m in good shape lol. Believe it or not they’ve cracked down on that I haven’t seen any really obese people driving trucks in a long time. Seems like ever since COVID people have become much dumber than usual lol. People have a chip on their shoulder nowadays and have no respect for others and just plain selfish. Sad really and I’m early 40s and I can tell the difference. One thing I will warn you of is you don’t know how long someone’s been driving a truck so don’t press your luck too much. Give space and go about your business.
