Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

During the fourth quarter of 2023, Chevy Trailblazer sales put the Bow Tie’s popular subcompact crossover in seventh place when ranked by sales volume in a crowded space, totaling 23 entries. The Subaru Crosstrek maintained the top spot with a 12 percent bump in sales to 44,561 units. The Chevy Trax (see running Chevy Trax sales), the Trailblazer’s corporate cousin, stayed in second place with an 836 percent leap to 44,127 units, continuing to nip at the heals of first place, this time within just 434 deliveries. The Honda HR-V followed in third with a 54 percent jump to 35,172 units. The Jeep Compass moved up several spots to fourth with a 28 percent uptick to 24,613 units, while the Hyundai Kona saw a 24 percent uptick to 22,598 units, placing fifth. The Toyota Corolla Cross took sixth with a 15 percent increase in sales to 21,950 units. However, the Chevy Trailblazer (see running Chevy Trailblazer sales), Chevy’s second segment entry, dropped to seventh place from fourth in the previous quarter with a two percent dip to 18,535 units. In addition to the two Chevy models, GM’s Buick currently fields three entries if you count the discontinued Encore. The Buick Encore GX (see running Buick Encore GX sales), the Trailblazer’s platform mate, placed 11th with a 51 percent jump to 13,755 units. The all-new Buick Envista (see running Buick Envista sales), the Trax’s platform mate, moved up to place 15th with 7,917 deliveries. The Envista indirectly replaced the Buick Encore (see running Buick Encore sales), which fell to 21st place with a 95 percent drop to 122 units as a discontinued model.

The Trailblazer earned a five percent market share in its segment, down three percentage points year-over-year. The Crosstrek posted a 13 percent segment share, down a segment-worst four percentage points. The Trax also earned a 13 percent share, up a segment-best 11 percentage points. The HR-V maintained a 10 percent share, while the Compass and Kona each held a seven percent share, both down one percentage point, and the Corolla Cross posted a six percent share, down two percentage points. The Buick Encore GX and Buick Envista posted a four percent and two percent share, respectively. Predictably, the discontinued Buick Encore’s share was nil, down a percentage point.

The five GM vehicles in the mainstream subcompact crossover segment, the Chevy Trax and Trailblazer, along with the Buick Envista, Encore, and Encore GX, accounted for a cumulative 84,456 deliveries. That was good for a 24 percent segment share, commanding nearly a quarter of all sales in this space and enough to solidly place The General in first place, while the Trax alone almost took the top spot.

Out of the 11 manufacturers represented here, four field multiple models in this space of 23 entries. However, three of those models have been discontinued and will eventually fall off this list. When combining the sales volume of those compared to automakers with a single entry, each ranks in this order:

  • GM – 24 percent share, five models (the Buick Encore has been discontinued, joined now by its indirect replacement, the first-ever Buick Envista)
  • Hyundai Motor Group
    • 18 percent segment share, five models (including Kia Soul)
    • 15 percent share, four models (not including Kia Soul)
  • Subaru – 13 percent share, one model
  • Stellantis – 11 percent share, four models (the Fiat 500X has been discontinued while the all-new Dodge Hornet joins the segment)
  • Honda – 10 percent share, one model
  • Toyota – six percent share, two models
  • Mazda – five percent share, one model
  • Nissan – five percent share, one model
  • VW – five percent share, one model
  • Mitsubishi – one percent share, one model
  • Ford – zero percent share, one discontinued model

While fielding multiple entries in a segment seems to result in higher quantities of deliveries for a manufacturer, brands with a single model – like Subaru and Honda – can still hold their own. Regardless, GM commanded first place, solidly ahead of Hyundai-Kia this quarter.

Overall, mainstream subcompact crossovers grew 41 percent to 338,094 units during Q4 2023, meaning negative Chevy Trailblazer sales significantly underperformed the segment average.

2024 Chevrolet Trax RS and 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer Activ

The GM Authority Take

Chevy Trailblazer sales slipped while the segment grew during the fourth quarter of 2023. The Trailblazer’s corporate cousin, the Chevy Trax, continued to skyrocket with an 836 percent leap to take second place, within striking distance of first. This makes us wonder if all those lost Chevy Trailblazer sales are going to the Trax. Either way, it’s a win for GM, as combined Chevy Trax and Chevy Trailblazer sales put the automaker squarely at the top, even ahead of the Hyundai Motor Group conglomerate, which includes popular Kia models. Add in the three related Buick crossovers competing in this arena, and The General claims nearly a quarter of all sales in a very crowded field.

About Chevrolet Trailblazer

A year ago, GM revealed the refreshed 2024 Chevy Trailblazer, showing off updated styling, an overhauled cockpit, new standard features, and more for the small crossover. This iteration of the Trailblazer debuted for the 2021 model year. The 2024 Trailblazer also introduces two new exterior paint colors while offering five interior colorways and wheel options.

For 2024, the small crossover also gets several option package changes, including a new trailering package.

Production of the 2025 Chevy Trailblazer is currently scheduled to commence on April 1st. The 2025 model gets an E85-compatible engine, making it a flex-fuel vehicle.

In November 2021, the Trailblazer received a perfect reliability rating by Consumer Reports. This was followed by the 2022 Chevy Trailblazer earning a 2022 Top Safety Pick+ award from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in February 2022, following the same award from IIHS in September 2021 for the 2021 Chevy Trailblazer. Last December, Consumer Reports gave the 2023 Chevy Trailblazer a “recommended” rating.

  1. Because you can’t find one on a nearby lot! GM is royally screwing around with these South Korean builds and it pisses me off.

    1. About two months ago, I looked at several local Chevrolet dealers inventory. And both the Trailblazer and Trax were hard to come by. There was a better chance you could find an Equinox and have a deal with a larger Equinox than a Trailblazer. A similar story with my local Buick/GMC dealer where there were plenty of Terrains but few Encore GXs. I just checked today and they have 30 Equinoxes, 26 Trailblazers, and 31 Traxs. Offers are as follows:

2024 Chevrolet Trax = no offers whatsoever except College Grad, Veteran, etc.
2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer = -$1,000 Chevy loyalty cash on offer
2024 Chevrolet Equinox = -$1,000 Chevy loyalty cash plus -$1,000 bonus cash plus -$500 Customer cash.

I’m wondering if the tight inventory of the Trailblazer with the surplus inventory of the Equinox is to blame also. Honestly, if for just a tad bit more money when accounting for offers I can get an Equinox or Terrain I’d rather just go for these two over the TB.

  2. The Trax is exploding because of a few reasons:

    1. It’s a refreshed model.
    2. It’s good looking, for what it is.
    3. It’s good overall, for what it is.
    4. It’s relatively cheap, for what it is.

Chevy did good with the new Trax. It’ll never be an upscale vehicle, but it’s not meant to be and people buying it aren’t looking for upscale. Let’s just hope the reliability is there.

    1. The Trailblazer initially did absolutely fantastic. And when looking at the year-to-date numbers it still is doing quite well. Some of those numbers reflect poor sales just because they can’t keep up with the demand so if there are any units to be sold the numbers reflect that. However I do wonder if the trax will essentially take over and possibly phase out the Trailblazer and once again it becomes extinct. They’re very similar vehicles and for thousands of dollars less you can have the trax with creature comforts and Is slightly bigger than the Trailblazer. I think the popularity of the trax is quite possibly 100% a reflection of this economy. People can’t afford five and $600 monthly car payments. So vehicles that are advertised as starting in the low 20s– that’s going to get people’s attention. Most of America can’t keep up with inflation. I’m quite fond of my Trailblazer and it was a very good purchase for me. I got it at a decent price before they all disappeared back in March of 21. Been a very excellent reliable vehicle so I do hope that the trax doesn’t kill it off. They both now are on the same platform so it’s entirely possible.

      1. In our rural area in a northern state, Trailblazers are outselling the Trax by quite a significant margin. Most people have been brainwashed into thinking that they need AWD when in reality, FWD with traction and stability control, good tires, sensible driving and a little planning ahead should get you through winter driving just fine.
We bought a 2024 Trax LS and we like it a lot.

        1. Yes that is true but if your front wheels are over ice, no phenomenal snow tire is going to get out out of that. So its still better to have traction in as many wheels as possible. Ideally, the best is a combination of good snow tires and AWD.

          Reply
      2. Problem is the Trax doesn’t have AWD. If they do land up killing the Trailblazer, I hope they re-add AWD as an option. I would consider the Trax but my wife wants the peace of mind of AWD for when it snows. Also, not having AWD was one of the reasons the Venue and C-HR isn’t doing so well as many people buying crossovers in this category expect that as a given option.

        Reply
  3. My expert take. Cheap Trax sells. Canadians need AWD Trailblazer.

  4. The comments here are spot-on – people are pinched financially, so the Trax is VERY appealing.
I drove the two back to back and the Trailblazer is far and away a nicer driving experience – at least for the AWD model. With the incentives available for TB, I chose it over the Trax. Interesting how that .1L of displacement and 3 more speeds can make all the difference. The Trax is very compelling for sure – I really wanted to like it, and actually did, it looks nicer than the TB, but the TB is a much nicer vehicle overall.

    1. Yeah I would pick the Trailblazer over the Trax. I did see the Trax up close and it is a nice vehicle, but the AWD is what would make me pick the TB over it. Yes I can drive just fine in the snow with a FWD vehicle but my wife would be the one dailying it and AWD gives her peace of mind as she is not comfortable driving in the snow. I also think the TB has a tad bit more cargo space than the Trax.

What I notice, with the exception of the Trax, any other mini “crossover” that lacks AWD just doesn’t sell well up where I live in NJ. The C-HR and Venue are barely seen around. But Corolla Cross and Konas (both offer AWD) are plenty popular here. I see Kia Souls but I think their popularity is attributed to its massive interior space and the Seltos is still more popular than the Soul. People expect the AWD option. I think people going for the Trax are people that typically go for compact economy cars.

      Reply
  5. The way I see it, the Trailblazer appeals to customers specifically looking for a compact crossover with the option of AWD. The Trax (while yes crossover looking has a more wagon-ish appearance than the Trailblazer) seems like a vehicle appealing to the crowd that wanted a compact economy car (think customers that would normally go for cars like Hyundai Accent, Chevy Sonic, Chevy Cruze, Honda Fit, etc.) now alienated because many manufacturers stopped producing these kinds of vehicles so Chevrolet delivered. I am basing this assumption because Hyundai killed off the Accent when it released the Venue and Nissan did the same with the Kicks after killing off the Versa hatchback. But the Trax is a much nicer vehicle than the Venue and Versa for the price. I just hope GM realizes this and doesn’t foolishly kneejerk reaction kill off the Trailblazer.

  6. Why is anyone worried about the Trailblazer being dropped? GM has done well. Yeah the styling is starting to be too common, so differentiate the fwd TB with a fresh look. That’s how the Soul was strong for so long (note: the Venue is smaller). HK Group covers more segment ground, but their styling has fallen off. For gm it would be intererting to also add a hybrid to the mix. The Bolt EUV should be reported with this segment.
