The GM Authority Take

Chevy Silverado EV sales continue, with this being only the second quarter in the books. Its corporate cousin, the GMC Sierra EV, is set to enter this new, growing battery-electric pickup truck space, one that is outside the traditional full-size trucks segment where GM continues to reign supreme.

Expanding the Chevy and GMC offerings, in early March, dealers began taking orders for the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV RST First Edition and for the 2024 Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. Both trucks are scheduled to launch this summer.

GM currently has 100,000 reservations and orders in place for its new all-electric pickup models. That number includes Chevy Silverado EV sales, plus the Sierra EV and Hummer EV Pickup. The automaker expects to fulfill the reservations and orders through the 2024 and 2025 calendar years.

Regarding the competition, The Blue Oval recently showcased the Ford F-150 Lightning Switchgear high-performance all-electric off-roader concept as a potential Raptor-like variant of the F-150 Lightning.

Last fall, Stellantis unveiled a new 2025 Ram 1500 Ramcharger EREV, or extended-range electric vehicle, for which GM has no answer. However, The General’s recent interest in developing new plug-in hybrid models could result in a Ramcharger competitor.

About Chevrolet Silverado EV

The first-ever 2024 Chevy Silverado EV officially debuted at CES 2022, arriving in the well-equipped RST First Edition and fleet-focused WT trim levels.

The all-electric Silverado was engineered from the ground up to be exclusively an electric vehicle. Rather than utilizing the automaker’s T1 truck platform, the all-new pickup truck leverages the available 24-module Ultium Battery pack as a fundamental part of the vehicle’s structure. The Chevy Silverado EV and GMC Sierra EV ride on a variant of the GM BT1 platform that underpins the Hummer EV Pickup, powered by Ultium Batteries and Ultium Drive motors. Among many other firsts for GM full-size pickups, the BT1 platform also utilizes an independent front and rear suspension system.

The 2024 Chevy Silverado EV 3WT and 4WT deliver an estimated 393 miles and 450 miles of range from a full charge, respectively. The 2024 Silverado EV 4WT delivers true pickup truck capabilities with a maximum tow rating of 10,000 pounds and a maximum payload rating of 1,400 pounds.

2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV RST First Edition

In addition to the aforementioned WT variants, the Silverado EV will be offered in the RST trim level, with a long feature list, debuting as the RST First Edition. A Trail Boss trim will launch as a 2025 model. Other trims, such as a new Custom trim level that GM Authority was first to report about, as well as High Country, are expected to join the lineup in the near future.

The RST First Edition features GM’s Adaptive Air Ride suspension as standard and four-wheel-steering for improved maneuverability like that of the Hummer EV Pickup.

Naturally, the Chevy Silverado EV will draw comparisons to the ICE-based Chevy Silverado 1500. Check out our exterior and interior dimensional comparison for both models.

Production of the 2024 Chevy Silverado EV Work Truck began this past June at the GM Factory Zero plant in Michigan, previously known as the GM Detroit-Hamtramck plant.

The Chevy Silverado EV was among the NACTOY 2024 Truck of the Year finalists, competing in the 30th annual North American Car, Truck, and Utility Vehicle of the Year Awards.

  1. Wowee! 443 is so newsworthy, stop the presses!

    1. The article doesn’t mention how many silverados were AVAILABLE for sale. Maybe they only built 443 in the 4th quarter. So, that’s all they could sell. know there’s a waiting list to purchase them. I’m on it.

  2. 443 Silverados spread over THREE MONTHS is outstanding! Couple that with the 825 Hummer sales over that same time period, and I can certainly see why Mary wants to commit to an all electric future! Remember, she preaches it not about volume or market share, it’s all about average transaction prices and profit margin! The new LEANER greener GM will be so efficient, they will be able to produce all their vehicles in a single garage-sized factory! I can’t wait to invest all of my portfolio in GM stock, the upside potential of this GENIUS volume downsizing strategy must be huge! Think of all the material waste that can be saved when going from producing millions of vehicles to less than 10,000 annually! Best CEO corporate vision ever!

    1. I think there is very little rational understanding of the bind that GM is in with rising CAFE standards and looming CARB mandates (100% emission free by 2035 in 14 states – 40% of US car market) which forces their hand to develop BEVs. These government decrees require massive investment by GM and years of planning to move in this direction – GM’s survival is 100% tied to selling trucks and these mandates (in their current form) will destroy that, therefore GM must develop the Silverado EV. Even if Trump wins, it will only kick the (CAFE standards) can down the road for another 4 years – CARB (emission free) will still be on the horizon. Therefore, GM will keep building BEV infrastructure capacity and slowly ramp the Silverado EV and continue to sell ICE trucks as long as they can. One shouldn’t conflate GM’s low sales of the Silverado EV with demand as they have over 150k reservations – these will not be filling dealer lots like the Lightning.

  3. HM just doesn’t use their head anymore. Knowing that it will be difficult to bring a cost competitive full-sized EV truck to the market, why would you start from a clean slate and incur all of those development costs when they could have used the already proven existing Silverado platform? Doing that, the new EV truck could have been for sale much sooner and for significantly less upfront cost? GM just doesn’t seem to understand the concept of sharing components between different models. It’s a huge savings in time, money, parts and supply chain management. That seems like engineering/marketing 101. Now they have a new model that has significant development investment and future parts support needs that is too expensive and they have sold 400 units. This screams inefficient waste that may never break even and likely never actually make any profit. In my humble opinion, GM needs new leadership.

    1. They could of half @ssed it like Ford for short term sales, but they invested in the modular Ultium platform which shares components across all of GMs BEVs (Equinox, Blazer, Lyriq, HUMMER and Silverado EV). A dedicated platform has less compromises and is more efficient. GM announced a slow ramp of these trucks – I assume they don’t want a Blazer EV problem tainting the Silverado EV.

      1. Are you forgetting that it has been exposed that the ultium pack is vulnerable to complete failure if only one cell goes bad? Have you forgotten that honda already bailed on their partnership? Their “ev investment” strategy has gone totally bust.

GM will continue to rip off ICE buyers to subsidize mary’s green fantasies (who is only in place so gm can qualify for financing from dei-constrained financial institutions).

        Reply
        1. I think LG Chem and the battery packs used by GM for Ultium applications in the US are sh!t, but the modular architecture is solid – GM uses cylindrical cells in Chinese Ultium based vehicles.

So, I suppose GM should just ignore CAFE fines and upcoming CARB sales restrictions in 40% of the US auto market and just build V8 powered everything.

                1. ‘GM should build what customers want’ It looks like GM is building what some of their customers who bought these wanted, plus with over 150k reservations for these trucks, it looks others also want one. Just because you don’t want one, doesn’t mean someone else doesn’t. The only GM products I like are their trucks, specifically Duramax – therefore, by your reasoning, GM should only build what I like.

I agree we should end all federal mandates regarding car sales and end ALL federal gas/oil and BEV subsidies, but that isn’t going to happen with career politicians lining their pockets. But as far as state mandates dictating emission free sales by 2035 – that should be up to each state to decide, if one doesn’t like it, move to another state, and companies like GM will have to weigh the consequences of their vehicle make up.

          2. Exactly, folks are forgetting that GM has been selling problem free EVs in China this whole time. This is the first Gen tech along with mostly in-house design where as the Bolt was outsourced. There isn’t a rush a race to a finish line like some neigh sayers would like you to believe. Adjustments will be made but know this EVs aren’t going away.

  4. EV’s are not practicable for actual truck use in many ways, other than a grocery getter. Real trucks are GM’s largest volume and profit margin by FAR. Nothing else even comes close.
Plus, there is no real reason to even have EV trucks.
This is all a Guberment pushed bad experiment. #BloodBath

  6. I wonder how they expect to sell another plant’s worth of electric trucks (Orion) when they cannot sell out the output of Factory Zero. Hopefully the delay in getting Orion fired up again is so that an appropriate ICE or hybrid vehicle can be found for it.

  12. mike s, what bs, exactly, are you referring to: GM selling a few BEVs along with millions of ICE cars or the upcoming emission free state mandates? Assuming you believe in companies and states doing what they want, then you shouldn’t be whining about this at all – poor decisions have consequences. I would agree that the federal CAFE standards are illegal and should be discarded. I think we should let the market decide and end all gas/oil and BEV subsidies, but we all know that won’t happen.
