As GM Authority reported in February 2024, the Cadillac Lyriq once again qualifies for the full $7,500 U.S EV tax credit after General Motors made quick supplier-related changes. Now, the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV has followed in the Lyriq’s footsteps and has also regained eligibility for the full tax incentive.
For reference, the Blazer EV and Lyriq lost eligibility in December 2023 due to the U.S. Treasury Department’s updated guidance. Under these new rules, if an all-electric vehicle is sold with battery components sourced from a list of U.S. geopolitical rivals – which includes China, Russia, Iran, and others – the EV doesn’t qualify for the tax credit. With that in mind, two minor components in the Ultium battery cells disqualified the Bow Tie electric crossover.
In response, The General quickly began sourcing the affected parts from other countries and suppliers and claimed that the Blazer EV and Lyriq would become eligible once again in early 2024. Thankfully, for those interested in the electric crossovers, this timeline ended up being accurate.
It’s worth noting that Blazer EV units that don’t qualify for the tax credit will still be eligible for GM’s $7,500 cash purchase incentive. To determine if the Blazer EV you may be interested in can receive the tax incentive, General Motors created an online tool where you simply plug in the vehicle’s VIN and smash the “Search” button. Depending on your own qualification status for the tax credit, the discount from GM might be a better deal.
As a reminder, the Chevy Blazer EV rides on the GM BEV3 platform and is powered by GM Ultium Drive motor and GM Ultium battery technologies. Meanwhile, production takes place at the GM Ramos Arizpe plant in Mexico.
GM has recently resumed sales of the Chevy Blazer EV following a stop-sale order that was in effect for about two months. This electric crossover also now comes with a lower starting price than before, starting right around the $50k mark before any discounts or tax incentives kick in.
