There are plenty of opportunities to debate which car will come out on top in a race, but until the rubber hits the road, it’s all just a bunch of noise. Luckily, the following video is more than just bench racing, showing what happens when two modified sports cars go for the fastest lap in a time attack-style battle. The contenders in question include a C5-generation Chevy Corvette Z06, facing off against a Honda S2000. It’s American horsepower versus Japanese agility – which will walk away the winner?
The video comes to us from the Driving Line YouTube channel, and clocks in at a little over 12 minutes. The video includes some background on the cars and the drivers, plus high-speed driving action at Chuckwalla Valley Raceway in Southern California.
Both vehicles were modified specifically for track days. Over in the Chevy camp, we find a 2004 Corvette Z06, which features Riaction GP-1 coilovers and G-LOC brakes front and rear. There’s also Nitto NT01 tires in a square setup, sized at 315/30R18 at each corner. The naturally aspirated 5.7L V8 LS6 engine remains unmodified, with output at the wheels estimated at 343 horsepower and 345 pound-feet of torque.
As for the Honda S2000, the mod list includes JRZ RS Two coilovers, G-LOC brake pads, a tuned AEM Infinity ECU, Rockstar roll bar, and OS Giken 4.44 gear limited-slip differential. The Honda is also rolling on Nitto NT01 tires.
Although the Honda makes just 225 horsepower at the wheels, roughly 118 fewer ponies than the Corvette Z06, it’s also significantly lighter, undercutting the Chevy by more than 500 pounds.
Of course, the mods and specs are indeed quite important, but the hot shoe behind the wheel is equally as critical, if not more so. In the Corvette Z06, we find Ger Xiong, who has race experience, but limited seat time in the Corvette and limited experience at Chuckwalla. By comparison, the Honda S2000 driver, Ricky Hernandez, has loads of experience in the Honda and knows the intricacies of Chuckwalla well.
