The GM Authority Take
Most models were in the red during the quarter, with only the Sierra full-size pickup lineup – which includes the Sierra 1500 along with the Sierra 2500 HD and Sierra 3500 HD – seeing an increase. Total sales of the Sierra line were up 10 percent to 79,510 units.
The Professional Grade brand’s first-ever all-electric model, the Hummer EV Pickup full-size off-road supertruck, moved 825 units as sales continue to slowly gain traction and production continues to ramp up. Its sibling, the Hummer EV SUV, joins it in the marketplace, posting 1,203 deliveries.
The General expects the Hummer EVÂ SUV variant to account for roughly 60 percent of total Hummer EV sales and the Pickup variant to make up the remaining 40 percent. That sales ratio was incidentally reflected this quarter.
A couple of models did post positive gains during the 2023 calendar year overall. The Acadia midsize 3-row crossover saw a 25 percent jump, and the extended-length Yukon XL full-size SUV had an eight percent sales increase. This indicates drivers are looking to GM’s truck and SUV brand as a good option for vehicles with 3-row seating.
The Sierra lineup was up a whopping 105 percent in 2023.
In September 2023, GM unveiled the all-new 2024 Acadia. The all-new Acadia introduced a wealth of updates and changes over the preceding 2023 model year. A few include larger dimensions, more tech (including Super Cruise), a new turbocharged engine, and a bunch of new safety features. Joining it, the 2025 Terrain compact crossover is on the way as a next-generation model, set to arrive next year.
Along with the brand’s compact and midsize crossovers, GM confirmed that the refreshed 2025 Yukon will arrive this year.
Sales of the Canyon midsize pickup suffered during this quarter and the entire year despite introducing a next-generation model. The slow rollout of a “Best of 2024” midsize pickup truck for the 2023 model year may be a contributing factor – an issue that continues for the 2024 model year.
The new 2024 Canyon AT4X AEV Edition debuted this past summer, offering trail-ready upgrades over the first-ever 2023 Canyon AT4X. It follows the all-new 2023 Canyon introduced in August 2022 as the fresh, third generation of the midsize pickup. It features revised exterior styling, an overhauled cabin, a new powertrain, and a range of tech goodies.
In October 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 Sierra HD, debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, new tech, and powertrain updates.
The HD model joins the previous refresh of the light-duty Sierra.
The wholly refreshed Sierra lineup also introduced Denali Ultimate and AT4X off-roader variants. AT4X AEV Editions follow as Big Red’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.
Among all the models listed here, the Savana commercial van posted the most significant drop during the quarter and fell short during the year overall. This is most likely due to competing against updated offerings. Tracing its roots to the 1990s, it is the oldest GM vehicle currently in production.
While the Savana and the identical Chevy Express were thought to be discontinued after the 2025 model year, GM had plans to redesign the Chevy Express for the 2027 model year, keeping the ICE powertrain. However, a recent report by Autoweek indicates that The General may have canceled plans for any next-generation vans.
