Some 2024 Chevy Trax Units May Have A Roof Leak

GM has issued a service bulletin for certain units of the 2024 Chevy Trax which may have water leaking through a defective roof seam weld from the outside when the vehicle is exposed to rain, snow, washing, and so on, causing a variety of problems inside the cabin.

Water entering through the roof and being present inside the vehicle, as well as signs of water intrusion such as bubbled paint, rust and corrosion along the interior roof seam, are among the signs this defect exists and an incorrect brazing weld was applied to the specific 2024 Chevy Trax unit’s roof during production.

Several other symptoms are possible as a result of pinholes or cracks in the roof weld. The leaking often affects certain electronics within the 2024 Chevy Trax and causes them to become inoperative. The shifter light may become non-functional, as may the crossover’s key fobs. Other problems may occur with the remote control door lock system.

GM warns that repairs should not be carried out by do-it-yourselfers, but should be completed only by official Chevrolet service personnel to ensure the work is done correctly and is carried out under warranty. Affected vehicles are found among those produced between the start of regular production (SORP) for the model year and August 18th, 2023.

Once inspection has verified the presence of a holed or cracked laser brazing weld at the roof seam, dealership technicians are instructed to fix it by using a sealer product to fix the holes. Damaged paint may need to be touched up with the appropriate color, and damage to electronics corrected to ensure proper function.

The repair is typically covered under the bumper-to-bumper warranty of the 2024 Chevy Trax crossover. The service bulletin number is 23-NA-107.

As a reminder, the 2024 Chevy Trax introduces the second generation of the Bow Tie’s subcompact crossover with numerous interior and exterior changes and updates, including significant dimensional changes. The all-new model is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque. The engine connects to the GM six-speed automatic transmission, with only a front-wheel drivetrain configuration now offered for the vehicle.

Under the body panels the Chevy Trax rides on the GM VSS-F vehicle set. Production takes place at the GM Changwon plant in South Korea.

  1. This is the first negative report I’ve seen on the Trax and it’s BAD. If I had one, I’d run away from GM and never look back.

  2. GM quality strikes again.
Should have gotten a Honda or Toyota.

    1. Yea..ok, like Honda and Toyota don’t have their share of problems. How about all those rusted Toyota truck frames, which is the largest recall in the industry.

      1. Tom Scotty Kilmsr is stuck in 1985 the time machine never went back to get him 😂 lol! He has a blind faith in Japanese cars while I will admit they make a great car they are not perfect…what about Honda’s recent recall with their 4 cylinder engine mixing antifreeze and oil inside the engine there goes your engine now you need a new one…that recall affected a lot of cars, I have never had a GM car do that to me! Or how about Toyota and how they lied about the the gas pedals being stuck by a floor mat killing people… again I have never had this happen in any of my cars and I use two 2 rubber floor matts!

        1. Unfortunately, some GM v-6’s (3.1 and 3.4) had intake gasket failures that leaked coolant into the crankcase. Luckily I caught it on my daughter’s car before the engine failed. She knew to stop and call me when the coolant light came on. When I pulled the dipstick it was way overfilled with oil and antifreeze. New intake gaskets and good to go.

          1. Stan that was in the 90s and early 2000s old news…but my point is that Japanese cars are not the holy Grail of automobiles half of them are boring appliances, the New Supra is a BMW the original Supra twin turbo gave the Corvette headaches, the Japanese like the most of the auto industry have lost their way all they care about now is PROFITS! and that goes for ALL car companies not just GM or Toyota! That’s the bottom line the real issue here.

    1. Better yet, build them in the United States

  4. They should be building these Trax vehicles in the USA not Korea Americans need jobs if it where built here this probably would not have happened! Mary Bara bring manufacturers back to the USA! It’s funny because I just watched a YouTube video on the old 60s and 70s GM BODY BY FISHER assembly plant where a guy would sit in a car being doused with water to ensure there where no leaks…they should try doing that in Korea!

    1. If they were built here, they’d be $5K more.

      1. Beachy29579 I would rather pay $5k more then a roof that leaks.

        1. @pattyb if they were built here, you would have more than roof issues. Just because the workers are making 60 bucks a hour does not = quality.

          1. That’s may be true but Galen Issac Korean workers don’t follow American worker standards and rules either. Whatever I am not arguing over this I spoke my opinion…have a nice day!

    2. If they wanted better quality they should be made in Japan not here. “USA Made quality” doesn’t exist anymore. The Japanese have been killing us in Quality for years.

      Reply
      1. Unfortunately all auto companies have dropped in quality. Mostly simple errors that shouldn’t happen. Their focus has gone to EV technology ( and not well ) and their day to day business of building quality cars/trucks has suffered. GM is not alone here and is faring better than most. Others need only to bow deeply and all is forgiven.

    oh wait …
Can you say, “Class Action Lawsuits” ?

    1. The right thing to do would have been to buy those units back. Same with the pickups. CALs would just get a recall at best.

  9. Btw, these welds are crucial to the integrity of the cabin during a rollover.
NO ONE is addressing the Safety Issue .
Body putty and “sealer” is not a fix when the roof “hits the pavement”.

    Reply
    1. Good god people, the structural integrity of a roof is determined by the framing including the window pillars, outer edge rails and the cross rails INSIDE the roof. This is a weld where the sheet metal meets the roof rails. And it is a pinhole or two IF it is there. If was a bad weld where a cross member inside the roof joins the rail framing, that would be a structural issue. Sheet metal is NOT structural.

  10. Phil if he’s wrong then why can you have dents on a car roof but the roof does not collapse or leak….he’s RIGHT sheet metal is NOT structural!

  11. This is why buyers are advised not to buy an all new model in its first model year. The Trax hasn’t been crashed tested yet, so we don’t know its rollover performance. I hope dealers fix the defect properly and not try to upsell other products like extended warranties during this repair.

    1. How do you know the Trax has not been crash tested yet?

      1. The Monroney stickers on the Trax vehicles state the vehicles have not yet been crash tested.

  12. Upon reading this, I went straight out to my Trax and looked at the VIN label manufacturing date: 8/23. 😮 So I have no idea if I have one built before or after the problem was remedied on the assembly line. I will NOT be happy if I have problems down the line because of this!

    1. I read it as AFTER August 18th, the issue was resolved at Changwon.

      1. I was relieved to learn today that my Trax was built 8.29.23. I asked the service advisor when I took it in for its first maintenance service. He had not heard of the roof leak issue, which is fine.

  13. all you people blaming workers probably don’t understand these are probably welded and glued by robots. So the issue is the programmers more than likely. So could be from anywhere in the world. Things happen. All manufactures have build issues. If you could get every manufactures build issues not just automobiles you be surprised how many issue there are.

  15. I’m thinking about buying a 2024 Trax.

You tell’em, Joe. No one is perfect and that means NOTHING EVER will be PERFECT ! ! ! Sorry if I bruised your ego(s), but, that’s the way a ball bounces (is that a historical FACT?) !

I don’t like the thought of Americans purchasing out-sourced various part either (not sure of the % on the Trax–I’ll have to look at the sticker again),,,but…lots of people are discouraged with America (and that goes for Americans too) !

i could get into “the management/union thing” but it seems to me this problem was NOT a problem caused by MANUAL LABOR (soooo…they are “off-the-hook”…for now)!

This did SEEM TO BE (to me) a robotic welding issue and you SHOULD at least thank the employee that DISCOVERED that issue…and hopefully it has been resolved !

All this modernization & technology seemed to create hostility (remember,,,NO ONE IS PERFECT AND NOTHING WILL BE PERFECT EITHER) THUSLY…while building-up these “communication-gap-related opinions”. Settle down, take a break and exhale (one for yourself and one for me also)…and remember…….ROME WASN’T BUILT IN A DAY…….O.K.?

If you are going to your job and don’t have the big picture on your mind…you’re going to start betraying yourself, your co-workers and managers and then…GO HOME TO YOUR WIFE & KIDS AND TAKE IT OUT ON THEM ! ! ! ! !

IS THAT WHAT YOU WANT—–you’d beeeettterrr NOOOOOT… [:-0

I hope your day gets better [:-)
