Some 2024 Buick Envista Units May Have A Leaky Roof

The 2024 Buick Envista is included in a service bulletin issued by GM which describes a fix for a leaky roof seam that results from an incorrect brazing weld along the line where the roof joins the body panels, allowing water from the outside to trickle into the interior at one or more points.

The pinholes and/or cracks present in the incorrectly welded roof seam can result in multiple visual cues of a problem, including discoloration, rust or corrosion, and peeling or bubbled paint in the interior of the 2024 Buick Envista.

Rain water, snowmelt water, or washing water penetrating the roof seam of an affected 2024 Buick Envista unit can cause damage to several electronic systems as well. The crossover’s key fobs and its remote control door lock system may become non-functional. Additionally, the shifter light may stop working, depending on where the water enters.

The repair described in the service bulletin should only be carried out by properly trained and certified Buick service personnel. The General specifically warns against do-it-yourself attempts at fixing the problem, which could fail to correctly address it or affect the warranty. Buick Envista units produced between the start of regular production (SORP) for the model year and September 14th, 2023 are those potentially affected.

The vehicle should be inspected to confirm that pinholes or cracks exist in the roof laser brazing weld. Once these are located at one or more places, the repair technicians should use the correct sealant product to fill the holes. Touch-up paint may be need to repair paint damage caused by the leaks, as may replacement of minor electronic components if damaged by the water intrusion.

The repair usually falls under the coverage provided by the bumper-to-bumper warranty of the 2024 Buick Envista crossover involved. The service bulletin number is 23-NA-107.

As a reminder, the 2024 Buick Envista is the first model year of the first generation of the crossover offered on the U.S. market. The vehicle is motivated by the turbocharged 1.2L I3 LIH gasoline engine as the sole powerplant option, rated at 137 horsepower and 162 pound-feet of torque.

Under the skin the 2024 Buick Envista is supported by the GM VSS-F vehicle set, with production for the U.S. market taking place at the GM Bupyeong plant in South Korea.

  1. I wondered about the Envista after reading about the same issue with Trax yesterday. Off the potential shopping list all GM Korea vehicles go until 2026. Not taking a chance. Encore GX has iffy reliability according to Consumer Reports (only one reported on so far).

  2. I can understand having trouble with some newfangled electronics or complex software but you would think that GM would have welding down by now.

    1. Welding this day and age is a finely tuned automated process. One area lacking calibration can throw the tolerance off by Nm which can make a big difference in welds.

  3. Once again, the old adage “you get what you pay for” is painfully obvious with the new Trax and the Envista, Just look at the owner forum for the new Trax. It is filled with reports of problems, lack of repair parts, etc. There is a reason these are relatively inexpensive compared to the average new car price these days. They are literally the modern version of the Cavalier/Cobalt. Basic, cheap, entry level, disposable cars. After 5 years they will be worth 25-30% of the original price and sitting all over pre-owned lots.

  4. I was in Skilled Trades Welding for twenty years.
Automated or not, how does this get past inspection and Quality Control. evidently for months ?
If this can be present anywhere along the length of the seam, it can potentially run the full length on some vehicles and split during a rollover. Tell me again this isn’t a safety issue. Don’t be surprised if a national law firm files a Class Action .

  5. Weld Checks are to be done EVERY SHIFT, destructive or non-destructive during sub-assembly and or final assembly of the unibody. There is a line of Quality Control responsibility that failed over MONTHS.

Soon the investors will demand action from the Board.

    1. The problems happened at the plant level in Korea. There are several layers of management who are responsible for that. Why go directly to Mary? I have hardly seen any comments when the financial results for 2023 were published by GMA.

      1. The buck stops at the top. Quality Control failures across every line. It’s a Corporate wide issue.

        1. These kind of issues are common for all major car manufacturers. As long as they are managed and the Company is profitable nobody in his right mind would replace the CEO. To run such a large Company through these challenging times takes knowledge and experience. It is not a dictatorship from the top, it is a team work. If you lose the team trust and cooperation you might as well look for other opportunities. Even Bob Lutz, probably the best high level manager to work for GM, couldn’t fix / stop the Pontiac Aztek program before it turned out to be a disaster.

  6. Had a 2008 Enclave with the exact issue; spot welds left some holes in the sunroof rail assembly. Leaked like a sieve for a couple of years until the issue was finally discovered. GM finally did the right thing and we got a new 2010 for just 4K. We drove that for 176k with only one somewhat expensive issue (a timing chain replacement – $3k). Pretty satisfied actually and bought a new 2022 Enclave. The latest has been excellent so far with 26k on it. Anyway, my point is that in my case, GM stood behind it’s product.

  9. I’m wonder if this is the issue I’m having. Floorboard completely soaked on front passenger side and water stains in rear seat floor. Mostly around the center console.
