No. 99 Chip Ganassi GMC Hummer EV Skipping 2024 Extreme E Season

Chip Ganassi Racing (CGR), which has fielded the No. 99 GMC Hummer EV in the Extreme E racing series since the inaugural 2021 season, has announced that it will not compete in the 2024 season.

In its three seasons in the Extreme E series, CGR earned its sole win at the NEOM Island X Prix I in 2022. The No. 99 Hummer EV crossed the line in first with the late Kyle LeDuc and Sara Price behind the wheel, making Price the first woman in CGR history to drive a race-winning vehicle. The organization also boasts three podiums in its Extreme E portfolio, two of which were earned in 2023 with drivers RJ Anderson and Amanda Sorenson.

However, while CGR isn’t interested in taking part in the 2024 Extreme E season, it hasn’t turned its back on the championship entirely. In fact, the organization expressed interest in a potential return to competition in 2025 as Extreme E transitions to Extreme H, which will feature hydrogen-fueled race cars as opposed to electric vehicles.

“Chip Ganassi Racing can confirm that the team will not be competing in the Extreme E series for the 2024 season,” CGR said in a statement. “We sincerely thank Extreme E for welcoming our GMC Hummer EV entry as part of their innovative series and look forward to following the series’ growth. We will be watching closely as the series and its technical partners continue to push motorsports in their move upward and into a modernized off-road hydrogen-powered race car for 2025 and beyond.”

Taking part in a hydrogen-based racing series in the future could provide GM with another proving ground for alternative fuel technology. In fact, GM’s own Hydrotec fuel cell technology could even find its way to the off-road Extreme H division, should CGR continue its partnership with The General.
