NASCAR Chevy Teams Have Eventful 2024 Daytona Duels: Video

The NASCAR Chevy teams showed strength during the twin BlueGreen Vacations Duels at Daytona on February 15th, 2024, but couldn’t outfox two Toyota teams heading to the checkered flag in either race.

In Duel 1, Tyler Reddick, driver of the No. 45 Toyota TRD Camry, found himself under fire from three Hendrick Motorsports (HMS) Camaro ZL1 racers – Chase Elliott, No. 9 Camaro; Alex Bowman, No. 48 Camaro; and Kyle Larson, No. 5 Camaro – but managed to slice in front of Elliott and Larson both, blocking them coming out of Turn 4 and heading into the banked trioval beneath the flag stand.

Meanwhile, Jimmie Johnson’s No. 84 Camry outdueled the No. 44 Camaro of JJ Yeley for the final starting position in the Daytona 500, meaning Yeley will not compete in The Great American Race this year.

“Side-by-side [with Johnson] coming to two to go, I thought we were in really good shape,” Yeley said. “I made a split-second decision to go to the outside, carry the momentum, clear him, make the racetrack two-wide where he couldn’t pass. He stayed in the middle. The 19 [Martin Truex Jr.] pushed him. The momentum carried him all the way to the checkered flag.”

Duel 2 saw Christopher Bell’s No. 20 Camry in Victory Lane, having survived a massive 11-car pileup on Lap 48 that took out several top NASCAR Chevy contenders, including the No. 24 Camaro of William Byron and the No. 8 Camaro of Kyle Busch.

“I was just getting a push from the No. 6 [Brad Keselowski] there, and the No. 24 [Byron] I saw kind of got messed up, out of line and slowed down,” Busch said of the incident. “I tried to lift and roll out of the gas smoothly. I was still gaining too fast, and then I got all the way out of the gas. Got bumped again from behind and just accordioned into the No. 24 and sent him spinning.”

Check out full results for both Duel races at Daytona below, along with the starting grid for the 2024 Daytona 500, which is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 18th, although the forecast calls for quite a bit of rain that may delay The Great American Race. 2. Same old stuff as last year. A ho, hum, scrum with cars. Lots of pushing and shoving. They just don’t hold a candle to the races of the 60s, 70s and 80s.
