General Motors has released a Service Bulletin for select units of the GMC Sierra HD over an issue of engine stalling.
Tagged with Bulletin Number 23-NA-152, certain 2024 Sierra 2500 HD and 2024 Sierra 3500 HD units equipped with the Duramax turbodiesel 6.6L V8 L5P engine may have a problem where the heavy-duty pickup truck is stalling. Upon onset of this condition, customers may notice that the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) is illuminated, and that the Engine Control Module (ECM) may have one of 10 Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) saved.
This issue is believed to be caused by an anomaly in the truck’s software. As such, certified GM technicians are instructed to inspect affected vehicles and update the ECM / TCM with GM’s latest calibration. After this procedure is completed, techs are to perform a barometric pressure reset in GDS2.
Notably, it should take roughly 30 minutes to complete this fix.
As a reminder, the 2024 GMC Sierra features the naturally aspirated 6.6L L8T V8 gasoline engine, rated at rated at 401 horsepower and 464 pound-feet of torque, as standard on most trim levels. Meanwhile, the aforementioned 6.6L L5P is optional on most trims – and standard on the range-topping Denali Ultimate – producing 470 horsepower and 975 pound-feet of torque. Of course, the Duramax was also uprated for the 2024 model year.
Regardless of powerplant choice, every Sierra HD is equipped with the Allison-branded 10-speed automatic transmission as standard fare.
Under the skin, the Sierra HD rides on a more capable variant of the GM T1 platform – which it shares with its corporate platform-mate, the Chevy Silverado HD. Production takes place at the GM Flint plant in Michigan.
