Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

During the third quarter of 2023, combined GMC Yukon sales (Yukon and Yukon XL) place the Yukon family in second place in the mainstream full-size SUV segment when ranked by sales volume. The Yukon range clawed its way to the second place spot two years ago and has maintained that position by outselling the Ford Expedition as well as other rivals in this highly contested and lucrative space, with the exception of its two corporate cousins from Chevy – the Tahoe and Suburban.

Individually, the regular-length Tahoe (see running Chevy Tahoe sales) placed first in spite of a 16 percent dip in sales to 26,235 units. The Ford Expedition (see running Ford Expedition sales), which includes the regular-length Expedition and extended-length Expedition Max, followed in second with a 17 percent slip to 16,969 units. The extended-length Suburban (see running Chevy Suburban sales) placed third with a 37 percent drop to 10,144 units. Individually, the GMC Yukon (see running GMC Yukon sales), took fourth with a 19 percent slide to 10,793 units, followed by the GMC Yukon XL (see running GMC Yukon XL sales) in fifth with a 12 percent slip to 8,328 units. As during prior quarters, the two GMC Yukon models combined outsold the Ford Expedition, this time by over 2K units.

Curiously, the last three entries in this list were the only models that were in the green. The Jeep Wagoneer, which includes the regular-length Wagoneer and extended-length Wagoneer L, placed sixth with a 39 percent jump to 8,266 units, while the Toyota Sequoia moved up to seventh place with a 33 percent bump to 6,392 units. The Nissan Armada finished last with a five percent uptick for 3,466 deliveries.

As noted above, Ford Expedition sales figures include those of the regular-length Expedition (a Tahoe/Yukon competitor) and those of the extended-length Expedition Max (a Suburban/Yukon XL competitor). Meanwhile, Chevy and GMC full-size SUV sales are reported separately.

As has been the case for some time now, combined sales of the Tahoe and Suburban dominated the mainstream full-size SUV segment in terms of sales volume, followed by the Yukon and Yukon XL in second, while the Expedition and Expedition Max place third. Combining sales of all four GM SUVs results in 55,500 deliveries, enough for a commanding 61 percent segment share and 38.5K more than Ford.

The full-size mainstream SUV segment fell 13 percent to 90,593 units during Q4 2023, meaning combined Yukon and Yukon XL sales slightly underperformed the segment average.

The GM Authority Take

Even though GMC Yukon family sales were down, as were those of the Chevy models, both the Yukon as well as the Tahoe and Suburban outsold the Ford Expedition family. GM was able to move over three times as many units as The Blue Oval, dominating the mainstream full-size SUV segment for 61 percent of deliveries. This a very profitable space that remains key to The General’s financial health.

That’s why the UAW eventually expanded its strike to the GM Arlington plant in Texas this past October as contract negotiations stalled. Fortunately a GM-UAW labor contract was ratified in November. While sales of the whole segment were down, GM models underperformed the average due to a pause in production that lasted nearly four weeks. Before then, however, the facility was running at full capacity, with no room to produce more units.

The arrival of the forthcoming 2025 Yukon refresh will undoubtedly further cement GM’s command of the lucrative full-size SUV segment, which is second only to the bread-and-butter full-size truck space.

About GMC Yukon And Yukon XL

While the 2024 GMC Yukon was originally expected to introduce a mid-cycle enhancement, the refresh will now arrive for the 2025 model year.

Changes for 2024 include dropping the Redwood Metallic paint color, while the 2024 Yukon Denali Ultimate will offer two new wheel options as part of a small number of 2023 Yukon changes.

This past November, the GMC Yukon won the Strategic Vision 2023 Total Quality Impact award in the full-size utility category.

Regarding the refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon, check out what we know and expect for the 2025 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Among the long list of updates and changes will be new front and rear fascias, optional 24-inch wheels and updated deployable running boards. Inside, larger screens with new software to run them, plus 5G network connectivity will be present and accounted for.

Recently, GM confirmed that the refreshed 2025 GMC Yukon will arrive this year.
