Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

GMC Sierra sales during the fourth quarter of 2023 placed Big Red’s full-size truck family in fourth place in the full-size mainstream pickup truck segment when ranked by sales volume, the same spot it occupied the prior quarter. The Ford F-Series (see running Ford F-series sales) maintained the top spot in spite of an eight percent dip in sales to 165,514 units, while the Chevy Silverado (see running Chevy Silverado sales), the Sierra’s corporate cousin and T1 platform mate, took second with a one percent increase to 143,390 units, actually narrowing the gap with the F-Series. The Ram Pickup took third place with a seven percent growth to 112,486 units, while the GMC Sierra (see running GMC Sierra sales) placed fourth with a ten percent jump to 79,510 units. The Toyota Tundra followed in fifth, with a nine percent increase to 32,497 units, while the Nissan Titan rounded out the list with a 47 percent jump to 3,782 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Sierra earned a 15 percent share, up one percentage point year-over-year. The F-Series held a 31 percent segment share, down three percentage points, while the Silverado maintained a 27 percent share, and the Ram Pickup earned a 21 percent share, up one percentage point. The Tundra maintained a six percent share, while the Titan posted a share of just one percent.

Combining sales of the Chevy Silverado along with those of the GMC Sierra gave GM a commanding 229,900 combined deliveries for a 42 percent segment share, outselling the Ford F-Series by over 57K units. That maintains The General’s standing as the best-selling manufacturer of full-size pickups in America, selling two out of every five internal combustion-powered full-size pickup trucks in the U.S. during Q4 2023.

The GM Authority Take

GMC Sierra sales performance continued in the green, enabling a 22 percent growth for the complete 2023 calendar year.

Improvements to and expansion of the Sierra lineup appears to have paid off for GMC, resulting in improvement to its bottom line as well as growth in sales volume. This, in turn, has delivered very healthy financial results for the fourth quarter of 2023 (see GM Q4 2023 earnings).

Even better, combining sales of the Sierra with those of the Chevy Silverado keeps GM as the top seller overall of full-size pickup truck sales in the U.S. Going forward, Sierra sales should remain strong, limited only by production capacity and resulting supply.

About GMC Sierra 1500

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 introduces only a handful of changes and updates compared to the refreshed 2022 Sierra 1500.

The big news for 2023 was the debut of the first-ever 2023 GMC Sierra AT4X AEV Edition as the most off-road-capable factory Sierra 1500 ever.

For 2024, the GMC Sierra 2.7L engine will be called TurboMax. Additionally, the 2024 Sierra AT4X will offer the LZ0 Duramax diesel engine to provide more low-end torque while off-roading, joining the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine for available powerplants. Beyond that, the 2024 Sierra 1500 offers a new drop-in bedliner and a new bed Utility Wall Package.

Furthermore, the GMC Sierra 1500 now offers a ZR2 Spec Multimatic DSSV Shock System accessory for the 2019 model year or later Sierra 1500, with a design and tuning intended to provide the truck with improved off-road performance.

About GMC Sierra HD

The 2023 GMC Sierra HD receives minor changes and updates over the 2022 GMC Sierra HD.

In October 2022, GM unveiled the refreshed 2024 GMC Sierra HD debuting fresh exterior styling, a new interior, a revised trim level lineup, new tech like standard wireless CarPlay and Android Auto, safety features like Adaptive Cruise Control, and powertrain updates. The refresh is highlighted by the arrival of the premium 2024 GMC Sierra HD Denali Ultimate, the pinnacle of heavy-duty trucks, which offers massaging seats for the first time on the Sierra HD. Consequently, a new Denali Reserve Package replaces the Denali Ultimate Package offered on the 2023 model. Also, the 2024 Sierra HD offers two new 22-inch wheel options.

Last May, GM officially debuted the first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra AT4X and new 2024 GMC Sierra HD AT4X AEV Edition as Big Red’s most capable heavy-duty off-roaders.

This past November, the GMC Sierra HD won the Strategic Vision 2023 Total Quality Impact award in the heavy duty pickup category. Additionally, the GMC Sierra 3500 HD won the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. ALG Residual Value Award, marking it as one of 28 nameplates projected to keep the highest percentage of their original value three years after purchase, and the top model for highest three-year residual value in the Large Heavy Duty Pickup segment.

About GMC Sierra EV

Over a year ago, GM also debuted first-ever 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali. The only variant built for the 2024 model year will be the Sierra EV Denali Edition 1. All other models, including the “regular” Denali, off-road AT4, and entry-level Elevation, will be offered for the 2025 model year.

Interestingly, the 2024 Acadia and Sierra EV are GMC’s first models to get GM’s new electronic shift lever.

As GM gets ready to launch the battery electric model this summer, we spotted the 2024 GMC Sierra EV Denali Edition 1 in showroom-ready condition in white last summer, followed by another example in gray out-and-about during the day, and that same model parked at night as GM’s Duncan Aldred shows it off.
