General Motors has released a safety recall for certain units of the GMC Sierra HD due to an issue with the tailgate opening while driving.
The problem: affected trucks may have a condition where the tailgate’s electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which may cause the tailgate to inadvertently unlatch while the vehicle is in Park.
The hazards:Â if the tailgate where to become unlatched while driving, unsecured cargo may come out of the truck bed and create a road hazard, thus increasing the risk of a crash.
The fix:Â certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge. Before this remedy is implemented, owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving.
Affected components:Â tailgate.

My 23 3500 Denali is on the list yet they say no parts to fix. WTF?
no remedy for issue yet mean, parts are being redesigned and made, then shipped, then customer notified parts are available
Like the Takata airbags???? It only took 8 years to notify me that the parts were available for the airbags, I am not holding my breath waiting.
parts were available almost right away for that recall, we are still doing those to this day, people just not getting notified for a variety of reasons, usually gm doesnt have your current address or never had it for some reason, or people dont go to dealers for work and are out of the system due to inactivity.
I wish that was the case as the local GMC dealer did all of the service on my LMM. Every time that I took the truck in for service the standard answer was we will let you know when the parts are available for your truck. As previously stated, that was 8 years later.
They certainly had my address as they were constantly hounding me to buy a new truck.
well thats weird, but not totally surprising i guess
Why would you want to go to a dealership, get overcharged for crappy service?
As far as dealerships are concerned, I have certainly kissed a lot of frogs along the way. Have a great relationship with my current dealer and have for a number of years. When I furnish the oil and filters, they change the oil for $25, if the fuel filter is changed $50 bucks including lubing the front end.. Well worth it to me. For the other normal maintenance stuff their prices are cheaper than the local diesel shops.
There are some good dealerships out there but can hard to find.
I have a 2023 Denali (1500) and while driving if you bump the tailgate button inside the cab the gate opens? If you’re driving or in drive the tailgate should not be able to open. They need to fix that.
I purchase this brand new of the shipping trailer in 2022. My Denali 1500 crew cab 6.2 engine 22 inch wheel air ride suspension. I had taken my truck back to the dealer on three accounts. They told me that my tailgate was working as it should. It is still coming open as i drive on the highway or road at times. took it back again and still no answers nor a fit. very frustrating. I love my truck.
Fully agree
Had a 22 Silverado high country with a radio-computer that wouldn’t work right. Kept not loading up and wouldn’t come on at times. Took it back to the dealership 5 times and they had no idea how to fix it. I got rid of it, yes I took a beating but I couldn’t take it anymore with no radio, maps, phone texts and CarPlay
I get that you guys are looking for material, but Is it really necessary to post separate redundant articles for Chevy and GMC every time both are involved in the same service bulletin or recall?
Cheapest parts from lowest bidders worldwide supply chain. Like Boeing, little font gm & others just assemble them.
How could the tailgate opening be a hazard while driving if it can only unlatch when the vehicle is in park? Seems like “risk of inadvertently driving with the tailgate open or causing damage to the tailgate if a trailer is attached” would be more accurate.
all I can tell you is like I said before, if I bump the tailgate button on the dashboard while driving it opens the tailgate. and then you lose things that you have in the bed. it should not open when you are in drive or driving!
If you have items that can blow out going down the road, and the tailgate drops due to corrupt tailgate switches, and makes vehicles behind you crash, well you get the picture why gm has put a stop sell on them.
Jeez, I guess going on strike didn’t necessarily mean that the quality of work on these vehicles was going to improve…oh well.
2023 Silverado 1500 High Country.. same issue, tailgate constantly opens…
I’m also caught up in this tailgate fiasco! I tried to trade my Denali in, and purchase a new 2024. I was informed that because of the recall I couldn’t trade it in until it was fixed. G.M have a $6000.00 credit this month on the 2024, the probability that I get it repaired this month is nil. Extremely frustrating! Mike G
