Although the Hummer name was reborn as an environmentally friendly sub-brand with the launch of the GMC Hummer EV Pickup and the GMC Hummer EV SUV, the burly off-roaders still can’t shake their reputation of being highly inefficient vehicles. With that in mind, the GMC Hummer EV was recently touted as one of the worst-performing mass-market vehicles in regard to its environmental impact.
According to a report from the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE), the Hummer EV was named to its “Meanest List,” signifying that the all-electric off-roader is one of the least efficient products on the market. In fact, the Hummer EV was the only electric vehicle included in this category.
It’s worth noting that the top-ranked vehicle in terms of environmental impact was the Toyota Prius Prime SE, a PHEV.
“It’s important for automakers to keep expanding affordable EV options rapidly so that the benefits of EVs are available to drivers across a wider spectrum of incomes as we transition away from cars that burn gasoline,” ACEEE Senior Transportation Research Associate and Lead Researcher Peter Huether was quoted as stating. “For drivers whose needs are not met by today’s charging infrastructure, many efficient and affordable hybrid options are available.”
It’s worth noting that despite the results, the GMC Hummer EV still had substantially lower fuel costs as compared to other vehicles named to the “Meanest List.”
As a reminder, there have been multiple studies claiming similar inefficiencies. More recently, the MIT Trancik Lab found that the Hummer EV is indirectly responsible for a similar level of emissions as a small gasoline-powered car. Of course, this largely due to the enormous size and weight of the all-electric off-roader, which tips the scales at over 9,000 pounds when equipped with its 24-module battery pack.
In response, General Motors hasn’t refuted the findings of these studies, instead pointing to the real-world importance and benefit of bringing performance-oriented EVs to the forefront, claiming that this is an important step in attracting new buyers to the emerging market.

Nobody buys EVs because they care about the environment. Not a Tesla customer, not a Rivian customer, and ESPECIALLY not a Hummer EV customer. It’s about the novelty of a new technology with gimmicks that it comes with. Hence why they are toys for the rich and the average Joe isn’t interested in owning one unless they come down to ICE levels of prices. Where I live, every Tesla you see is the second car next to a 3-row SUV typically a Mercedes GLS or BMW X7.
But it’s interesting how the study shows a hybrid leading the ranks of most efficient.
Someone near me has a RR with that fuel sipping V8 on the HSE trim next to their Model X.
FR, the Chevy Tahoe is the most popular vehicle in my county, followed by the Yukon and Highlander. My cousin in Florida bought a plaid last year purely because it was crazy fast but sold it after 3 months because the build quality was so bad. Ended up buying a ct5 black wing instead and loves it
There was a study done by Great Britain that states that EV vehicles will be worse for the environment then our current ICE and hybrid vehicles so why are we pushing EVs then? You need coal, natural gas, or some kind of fuel to power the strain on the electric grid and no Solor and wind power alone won’t do it. Again to the EV push is the government wanting to tell us what to drive and how to spend the money we work for. What bugs me is if hybrids came down in price and more people bought them there would probably be a big impact on tailpipe emissions. Now EV cars will probably come out but they need time for everything to fall into place it’s not going to happen tomorrow heck it might not even be ten years from now and this can’t be forced on people they have to make up their own minds that it’s a good idea and good investment.
It’s cute that you think this is all about saving the environment. My friend its all about politics and who has stake in lithium or rare earth stocks.
I am only saying what they keep trying to get us to believe…but who does it benefit switching to all EV? How does this help out government I understand the stocks but what else?
You know why the British were never successful in offering a Laptop / PC?
They couldn’t get them to leak oil.
I bet that laptop would have had lovely wood trim and suple Connolly leather though.
If I can find one person who “buys EV’s because they care about the environment” would you admit that your statement is wrong? Well, I am that one person that you say doesn’t exist. And there are many others like me.
Only GM can spend so much money on getting something so wrong and it being so completely obvious it was never going to succeed.
It worked for them. They retooled 5 factories on the taxpayers dime and now have the best in class half ton with seats that were built on line designated for EV’s. The Hummer EV catastrophe is a small price to pay.
The hippies are happy, the stock owners are happy, and the blue collars foot the bill like always.
It must be doing something right lol
Like the Celestiq, the Hummers never should have existed and is quite the commentary on the brain-deadness of GM executives that approved them.
Where is the love for the adorable efficient 7000lb cybertruck? Oh, right musk product. Can’t knock it on the green car list. lonnie can do no wrong. At least the hummer looks ok, not great, but ok, as opposed to the homer simpson designed tesla truck.
The HUMMER has a 200 kWh battery and weighs over 9,000 lbs and has the drag coefficient of a brick – hence its massive inefficiency – the CT weighs over 2,000 lbs less and gets better range with a 125 kWh battery. Its simple physics – weight and resistance (roll, wind, etc.).
Drag coefficient of familiar vehicles (lower is better):
HUMMER EV .50
F-150 .46
Tahoe .379
Cybertruck .33
C8 Corvette .32
Would be greener swapping out that battery pack with the 3.0 Dmax. Think they could save it with the 3.0 Dmax and corvette hybrid drivetrain?
Yes, but the ct is not a truck. It is a hot mess. But thanks for all the downvotes. I knew the musketeers would come. Cults, who knew in 2024?
mkAtx if they remade back to the future Marty would still have the car but maybe somehow he finds the cyber truck in the future I mean it already looks the part…that’s about it for the cyber truck though. And a hummer is not supposed to light and efficient it’s supposed to be big, heavy, and in your face screaming look at me I am different. I happen to like it now what if they redid the original Humvee that would be cool.
Come on, you know cults still exist. I mean, people still believe in the Steele dossier and that the 2020 election was completely above board without any fraud.
GM, famous for their inability to read the room. Hummer is a prime example.
the hummer is cool, theres definitely worse evs out there than the hummer. people hate the hummer because its big and powerful, (and kind of ridiculous).
And because losers can’t afford them
That’s right Rob there are cars and trucks I can’t afford but I don’t hate them because of that.
Camaro Kyle the Hummer is American the way it used to be big and proud and not afraid to be inefficient! 👍👍
I miss the old Hummer before the electrification.
Really like the look wish they would dump the EV and go to diesel I would buy one.
Glen how about a diesel hybrid why don’t we see those? Fuel mileage would be great 👍
No one knows the toll that used batteries will have on the environment and the wear and tear that 9000 pound EV trucks have on the infrastructure. The world is being de-forested at an alarming rate. We should all be planting more trees. They use CO2 and make O2 (oxygen) for us!
Johnsonsh unfortunately we now live in a world where we don’t care about planet earth it’s all about how much money can be made and your right rotting batteries that people won’t or can’t recycle is bad for the environment environment. Tree planting should be done as well be I don’t think that personal cars are the future we also need more mas transit for people to go to work I mean we waste a lot like one person commuting in a V8 four door pickup and you know it’s not a work truck, EV are heavier some are heavier then the truck I just mentioned…but making more profit is not the answer the answer is up to us to sacrifice some of needles luxuries.
I even considered installing diesel gen in back of pickup to keep batteries charged while I drive???? Only alternative I really like is H1 slant back have to go to the past to get a real hummer!!!!!!
