GM To Replace 2023 GMC Sierra Turbo 2.7L Engines Produced With Cracked Blocks

The 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 debuts the fifth model year of the current fifth-generation pickup, bringing with it a few important updates and changes over the refreshed 2022 model year. Unfortunately, some units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 were equipped with an engine that was manufactured with a cracked block. To rectify the issue, GM has issued a new Customer Satisfaction Program.

Some units of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 were equipped with engines with a cracked block.

The new Customer Satisfaction Program is tagged as N232415060, and identifies the issue as a Block Main Oil Gallery Hot Core Pin Casting Defect. The program was released in February of 2024 and only affects GMC Sierra 1500 units produced for the 2023 model year.

Affected units are equipped with a turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine that may have been manufactured with a cracked block. It’s uncertain exactly how many units of the GMC Sierra are affected by the new Customer Satisfaction Program, however, certain units 2023 Chevy Silverado 1500 and 2023 Chevy Colorado are affected as well, as GM Authority covered previously.

According to the new program, GM is instructing dealers to install a new engine on all affected units.

Update: according to a GM spokesperson who reached out to us following the publication of this article, there are only seven Sierra units affected by this program, along with three Silverado units and four Colorado units.

The 2023 GMC Sierra’s turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine is rated at a maximum of 310 horsepower at 5,600 rpm and 430 pound-feet of torque at 1,500 rpm, connecting to the GM eight-speed automatic transmission. The L3B was originally added to the GMC Sierra 1500 powertrain lineup in conjunction with the 2019 model year.

As for the rest of the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 engine lineup, further powertrain options include the naturally aspirated 5.3L V8 L84 gasoline engine, the naturally aspirated 6.2L V8 L87 gasoline engine, and the 3.0L I6 LZ0 turbodiesel Duramax engine.

Under the skin, the 2023 GMC Sierra 1500 rides on the GM T1 platform, while production takes place at the GM Fort Wayne plant in Indiana and the GM Silao plant in Mexico.

    1. These people have been asking for additional help producing this info for a long time. It’s a very demanding job doing this stuff every single day. Why not volunteer to help them out?
Secondly, if your engine is affected, you’re getting a brand new engine at no cost. That’s pretty good customer service these days.

  4. GM should create a department to prevent things like that. Perhaps call it “Quality Control”

    1. Quality has to be engineered into the product. Inspection only identifies those that fall short!

  6. Wondering how long owners will be forced to wait for a new engine ? The recall issued last year in late Summer for something as simple as defective airbags still has thousands and thousands of used vehicles sitting on Dealer’s lots unable to be sold until the airbags are replaced. Has this cracked block discovery resulted in any catastrophic engine failures?

  7. That’s what $60K buys these days? That is pathetic! I don’t care if they are replacing them. That should have never made it thru production.

  9. 2023 was a very bad GMC Sierra experience for me. No more GM trucks for me. General Motors converted me to a Tundra owner.

    1. Good thing tundra doesn’t have recalls, two new recalls. Big one is transmission issues.

  10. There’s more than just blocks that are cracked at GM for putting a 4 banger in a full size truck in the first place.
