GM Still Confident About Andretti Cadillac Becoming F1 Team

GM has been fighting tooth and nail to bring Cadillac to the Formula One grid, partnering with Andretti Global despite the fact that the General was reportedly asked to consider partnering with another entity to pursue F1 competition. However, F1 recently rejected GM’s application to become the 11th team on the grid for 2025, although the automaker isn’t ready to throw in the towel just yet.

According to a report from Autosport, GM vice president of performance motorsport, Jim Campbell, said that he is still confident that the Cadillac Andretti project isn’t dead in the water. Campbell said that the project is still moving forward, and that he is still actively pursuing a meeting with F1 after an earlier invitation for an in-person meeting was mistakenly delivered to a spam folder and overlooked by GM personnel.

“In terms of our application with Andretti, we feel great about our application,” Campbell said. “The FIA studied it against other applicants, and then gave our application a vote of confidence and approval. So obviously the FOM made their statement, and we have asked for a follow-up meeting with FOM [Formula One Management], and so we will work through that. We do believe between Andretti and Cadillac that we have got the capability of fielding a competitive entry.”

GM previously registered to be an F1 power unit manufacturer for 2028, and has already begun testing and development of a prototype. In fact, Andretti Global already began building an F1 car for wind tunnel testing even without final approval from FOM.

“As I said, we believe in the application we submitted,” Campbell said. “And in that application we articulated the abilities of both Andretti as a race team, and Cadillac as a manufacturing and engineering entity.”

  1. Cadillac needs to win Le Mans and then the pressure is on F1

    1. I tink that 1 Cadillac was in the first 3 at last year’s Le Mans 24 hours.

  2. FOM only wants gm/Cadillac not Andretti. A factory Cadillac team that supplies engines to customer teams as well. I find FOM treatment of the Andretti organization to be disappointing in this matter. I suggest they would be equal to or better than HAAS and Williams in their first year. Neither of those teams are an engine supplier, either.
Perhaps gm should field a factory team and place the Andretti organization in charge of it. That would be a twist.

  3. GM can’t design, build, and maintain a engine for Indy car never have always a Ilmor only time it wasn’t was when GM had to go to Cosworth and lease there’s at a cost of around $35,000,000 a year!

    1. Money is limited in Indy. The budgets take engines from a supplier just like they did chassis.

In F1 the money is big enough they can go in house.

GM can do anything but in most racing it is not cost effective to in house.

  4. F1 doesn’t need Andretti, neither we need Michael’s smugness! Although Cadillac would be a great addition!

  5. GM should get its own house in order before pursuing the F1 racing circuit. Perhaps money should be spent updating cars like the Malibu so they don’t rot on the vine. Why wasn’t there sufficient quality control done on the Blazer EV? GM has just too many issues right now too worrying about racing.
