GM Releases Updated 2014-2017 GMC Acadia Airbag Inflator Recall

GM has updated a product recall for certain units of the GMC Acadia crossover. The recall was initially released last year to address a defect in the Acadia’s airbag inflator. At the time, General Motors announced that further action was expected in February of 2024. GM issued a stop-delivery order for affected GMC Acadia units still in dealer inventory as of May 10th, 2023.

As GM Authority covered last year, the initial GMC Acadia product recall addressed a defect in the crossover’s driver-side airbag inflator. According to the recall, the defect may cause the airbag inflator to rupture in a crash. If the inflator ruptures, it could send metal shrapnel into the cabin, and as a result, seriously injure or kill passengers. The recall is tagged with Safety Recall number N232404980.

In order to address this issue, GM is instructing dealers to replace the Acadia’s driver-side airbag module. This recall affects the 2014 through 2017 model years for the GMC Acadia produced between March of 2014 and March of 2017. Per the original recall, it’s estimated that 293,143 units of the Acadia may be affected. In addition, some units of the Chevy Traverse and Buick Enclave are affected as well.

According to the latest safety recall update, affected vehicles may be released from the stop-delivery order only after the service procedure outlined by the recall bulletin has been performed. GM also says that this is a phased launch, with some vehicles marked as “Open,” and others marked as incomplete. GM will notify affected customers by mail. Independent repair shops, body shops, and third-party repair or distribution businesses will be contacted for customer information for the purpose of notification regarding this recall.

In addition, customers can visit my.gm.com/recalls and type in their Vehicle Identification Number to view any recalls or other actions that may be open on their vehicle. Customers can also reach out to GMC directly, as well as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), with any questions or concerns they may have:

  1. You actually may want to show photos of the model really being recalled. It was the older larger models. It was also sold in 2017 but not as the new model.

  2. I thought 13, 14 & 15 were part of the same generation build? Maybe I am mistaken.

  3. This recall has been in place for over a year for our traverse and yet still no parts are available, yet all new vehicles have an airbag in them that could have been sourced to recalled vehicles that have the potential to be fatal to its occupants

  5. I got another recall notice from GMC stating that the part is available to repair my vehicle.
So, I called nearby dealer to make an appointment, but the dealer is saying the part is not available. They don’t know when it will be available. This issue should be on the front pages of all the news media.

  6. it is now 10 months since recall 17V516000 (GMC Acadia air bags) was issued. Still no action by GMC. Yet, I understand that any of the in-stock cars had the airbags replaced so that they could be sold. What will you bet that the airbag company is mass producing airbags for all new model cars and not addressing the potentially fatal airbags already sold. Do we have to wait for the massive lawsuits against them due to deaths and injuries incurred due to this foot dragging? how about lobbying our representatives to ban future sales of any dealer where a replacement is not applied within a reasonable time frame?

  8. Went to trade in my 2016 Acadia Denali on a 2024 Acadia Denali and dealer only offered $ 5000.00 even though it was worth
$ 10,000.00. He said as a GM dealer he could not sell(or wholesale) the vehicle with an open recall. Who is going to reimburse me for the loss?

    1. My GM dealership told me it’s not legal to do that. Because it’s a safety recall they are obligated to give you the full trade in value and cannot penalize you for this issue. I would go back and let the guy know this, but then I would just walk right out, because I would never do business with a dealer like that…
