GM Releases Updated 2014-2017 Chevy Traverse Airbag Inflator Recall

GM has issued an updated product recall for certain units of the Chevy Traverse crossover related to an issue with the driver’s airbag inflator. GM initially released the recall in May of the 2023 calendar year, stating at the time that further action was expected in February of 2024. GM issued a stop-delivery order on affected units in dealer inventory on May 10th, 2023.

The rear end of the 2016 Chevy Traverse, the subject of a recent product recall.

As GM Authority covered last year, the initial Chevy Traverse product recall addressed units that may have been equipped with a driver’s side airbag inflator containing a manufacturing defect. This defect could cause the airbag inflator to rupture during deployment, and as a result, send metal shrapnel into the cabin. If metal shrapnel enters the cabin, it could result in serious injury or possibly even death.

To fix this issue, GM stipulates that a certified GM technician should replace the driver airbag module. The recall affects the 2014 through 2017 model years for the Chevy Traverse crossover, with an estimated 457,316 units affected. Vehicles were produced between March of 2014 and March of 2017. Several other GM crossovers were affected by the recall, including the Buick Enclave and GMC Acadia. The recall is tagged with Safety Recall number N232404980.

In the recent safety recall update, GM states that once the service procedure outlined by the bulletin has been performed, the affected vehicle will be released from the stop-delivery order and can be delivered to the customer. GM indicates that this is a phased launch, and that some vehicles will be marked as “Open,” while remaining vehicles will be marked as incomplete.

GM will perform a search for sold equipment affected by this recall and notify the purchaser by first-class mail. That includes vehicles repaired by a body shop, independent repair shop, or third-party repair or distribution business, which GM will contact to obtain information on the vehicle owner for the purpose of notification.

  3. You notified me on June 2023 that my 2017 Chevy traverse is involved in GM safety recall N232404980. Also that “…An inflator repture may cause metal fragments to pass through the airbag and into the vehicle interieor, which may result in injury or death to vehicle occupants.” It is now September 1, 2024. I have been driving my Chevy Traverse for approximately 7 years and NOTHING has been resolved yet??? My husband and I have been Chevy customers most of our lives and you have not resolved this issue that could kill us??? SHAME ON YOU! But you keep on producing billions of vehicles but don’t fix ones that are death traps. It shows how much GM cares about their customers.

  4. I have contacted GM three times since 2023 announcement of recall and each time advised there are no replacement parts available. The vehicle is now 9 years old with only 43,000 miles and I’m still alive. Hopefully, I go before the air bag does. Thanks GM
