GM Releases Updated 2014-2017 Buick Enclave Airbag Inflator Recall

GM recently updated a product recall for certain units of the Buick Enclave crossover. The recall, initially released in May of the 2023 calendar year, addresses a potential problem with the crossover’s airbag inflator. When the recall was announced last year, GM stated that further action was expected in February of the 2024 calendar year. GM issued a stop-delivery order for affected units of the Buick Enclave in dealer inventory on May 10th of 2023.

Per GM Authority coverage, the initial Buick Enclave product recall stated that some units may be equipped with a defective driver’s side airbag inflator. This defect may cause the airbag inflator to rupture in a crash, and as a result, send metal shrapnel into the cabin. If metal shrapnel enters the cabin, it could result in serious injury, or possibly even death.

To address this issue, GM states that a certified GM technician should replace the driver’s side airbag module. The recall affects units of the Buick Enclave produced between March of 2014 and March of 2017 for the 2014 through 2017 model years. It’s estimated that 244,304 units of the Buick Enclave may be affected, as well as certain units of the Chevy Traverse and GMC Acadia. The recall is tagged with Safety Recall number N232404980.

Per the new safety recall update, GM states that affected vehicles may be released from the stop-delivery order once the service procedure outlined by the recall bulletin has been performed. GM also indicates that this is a phased launch, and that some vehicles will be marked as “Open,” while others will be marked incomplete. GM will notify affected customers by first-class mail, including body shops, independent repair shops, and third-party repair or distribution businesses.
