As GM Authority previously reported, certain Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon owners were reporting that their midsize pickup trucks were developing dents on the roof following a touchless car wash service. Now, General Motors has released a fix for this unnerving concern.
GM issued Service Bulletin 23-NA-209, affecting select 2023 Colorado and 2023 Canyon units not equipped with a sunroof, in addition to some 2024 Colorado and 2024 Canyon units after a March 2024 update to the bulletin. More specifically, owners may comment on an “oil canning” or popping noise coming from the roof area during an automatic car wash. The cause of this unusual noise is likely due to the air dryers found at some of these touchless car wash services, where the roof panel could flex and thus create a dent.
To remedy this issue, certified GM technicians are to inspect affected trucks and repair any damage found. In addition, techs are to apply stiffening patches to the underside of the roof panel. Notably, this requires that the headliner be dropped, yet not removed, from the ceiling of the cabin.
As a reminder, the 2023 Chevy Colorado was available with two engine options, including the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L2R gasoline engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and the turbocharged 2.7L I4 L3B gasoline engine, which produces either 310 horsepower and 391 pound-feet of torque, or 310 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque, depending on the tune. Meanwhile, the 2023 GMC Canyon was only available with the High Output tune of the 2.7L L3B. Both midsize pickups were equipped with an updated version of the GM eight-speed automatic transmission.
Notably, the mid-level tune of the 2.7L L3B was dropped for the 2024 model-year Colorado, while the high-output variant was given the new TurboMax moniker.
Under the body panels, the Colorado and Canyon both ride on an updated variant of the GMT 31XX platform, while production takes place at the GM Wentzville plant in Missouri.

Exactly what I said back when the news broke. A stiffening patch stuck to the underside of the roof panel. Should do the trick! Sounds like they’ve already started doing it in regular production on the 2024 models.
I’m not real interested in taking my new $$$ truck through the carwash to find out if it’s “affected”…so I’ve only washed it 2x in 6 months ownership..by hand..(New England) Has gm identified specifically the mfr date of affected trucks or is it ALL 23 Colorado/canyons? Are they only “fixing” if you complain and have dents or are they recalling every truck? Apparently I bought I tin can…not a truck.
get in bed and push down slightly in front center area of roof. if it pops in, u have the issue. No need to go through car wash.
Annnnnd now you have a dent.. congrats!
I took possession of my new 2023 ZR2 just before Christmas. I have washed it ONCE in a car wash. Guess what? I have a dent in the roof of my cab. I will be making an appointment with the dealer tomorrow.
Here’s a fix build it correctly to begin with you got billions of dollars worth of computers and software up there you should be testing this s*** before you dump it on the public and they have to be put out to fix your lack of understanding of how to build the s*** you build
11 months and still holding out for an allocation for a Canyon AT4X…….
Bwahahahaha! They mean to tell us that my 2008 Chevy Aveo has a stronger roof that a tuff truck? Absurd.
Here’s the good news. My best friend ordered a 2023 Canyon in July 2023. He never received the truck. Therefore, he won’t have to worry about a cheap roof! But he’s still waiting for his dealer to get an allocation for a 2024. He was told to check this week 2/1/24 to see if the dealer gets an allocation for a 2024.
Have they actually made any 2024 Canyon’s? Are they all being shipped overseas? Are Americans last on the list?
your friend needs to find another dealer that is more of a high volume dealer. They sell more, so they get more allocations. I ordered a 2024 silverado at end of Sept. 2023 and picked it up at dealer 3 months and 1 week later.
I visited a large volume GMC dealer in Weatheford TX. They had 3 2023 Canyons and 62 2024 Sierra 1500 & 62 Sierra 2500 on the lot with a few in transit. Most were option loaded, although the dealer was giving up to 10k discount? Why so few Canyons? The sales guy said the strike ruined the delivery flow of Canyons. For what its worth he said Canyons should start arriving in a month or two. The prices on the Canyons they had where very close to the prices of the Sierras! I believe GMC is only producing as many as they want to keep the Canyons price elevated!
Production on the 2024s started January 2nd. I also had a 2023 Colorado on order that got cancelled, which I was glad about. My dealership had allocation for the 2024 and GM has accepted my order in the system last week. Call around to different dealerships, especially ones that do higher volumes, they will get allocation first.
Jan 2 doesn’t make sense, and the lack of delivery on 2024’s seems to support it. Supposedly Wentzville was producing 2023’s up until they closed plant the week of Dec 18, 2023. Then they were closed week of Dec 25 until Jan 2. So then they walk in on Jan 2 and immediately start rolling 2024 MY off the line. RIght, It takes half a day just to bring up the line from a cold start. Then the line has not been converted yet. Think about it — before strike they were to close month of October to do MY cutover. If it was going to take a month in October, do you believe it took no days in January. For any one who has a build notice I suspect it’s a preproduction run before they do SORP. They have spent January getting the lines ready. SORP will be forthcoming in February if they have parts. Check GM’s vehicle locator for Colorado or Canyon. There is not one 2024 listed. Not even In-transit. There are no shippable 2024’s.
A month seems like a long time to re-tool for a model that isn’t even a refresh. One less engine, one less instrument cluster.
Would agree if they hadn’t scheduled a month prior to the strike. Were they blowing smoke then? Or are they blowing smoke now? All we know for sure is, it’s now 5 weeks into 2024 and there are no vehicles in the pipeline.
Same engines as 2023, different ECM programming
So just what is this allocation crap? If I place a custom-made order and plunk down a deposit with a dealer GM might not make the vehicle for me?
I can perhaps see rationing for a dealer’s stock for their lot. But a custom order with deposit should be considered a sure sale.
Bob – Yes, you’d think a custom order would breeze right through but amazingly that’s not how GM operates. As others have mentioned, your dealer has to have an allocation for the model and trim you want and even then your order has to be accepted by GM. Once accepted, you then have to wait and see if it comes in exactly as you ordered, or if GM added something they wanted you have like the tow package they added to mine. BTW – I’m good friends with my local dealer and he told me earlier this week that the AT4X he ordered back in fall 2022 just came in. Unbelievable.
Ok my 2023Colorado was made in December of 2023, now they’ve known of this roof problem for a long time so beings made in December did they get it corrected before mine was built? Mine had to be one of the last 2023 made before change over and their saying no problem with 2024’s
My ZR2 was delivered to me in December 2023. I have an appointment next Monday at the dealer to have the roof problem fixed under warranty.
Bob, like the one guy said. Just go in your bed and push down on center of roof, if it buckles– take it in. If you have a sunroof– it’s not affected—–
It does affect the 2024, I have a 2024 Canyon Denali that this just happened to it today. Will be at the dealership on Monday to get it sorted. $70k for a truck and this will be the third visit in a month to get things sorted out.
They need to release a fix for the garbage shifting in the previous Colorados and Canyons that they continue to ignore…
Right on pat. I will never buy an 8 spd again in any gm vehicle. They should just drop that transmission and stick with the 10 spd. I’ll pay for the extra cost!
I experience the VERY SAME ISSUE with my 2023 GMS Sierra 1500. Going through the car wash and the driers create a loud popping noise from the roof of the truck. Need a recall on the Sierra too! Anyone else having same issue on 1500’s? How do we get GM to add them to the recall?
Our 2014 Holden Colorado7 does the same when going through a touch list car wash. This vechile was made in Thailand
You’ve been suffering with this catastrophic safety issue since 2014? And you’re still ALIVE? Good on you, mate! 😉
I’m waiting for a Dealer Denali to come in. Don’t want or understand this allocation bit. Supposed to be spec’d like I want? But with all this quality talk and especially the 8 speed tyranny issues, I may want to look at the Ranger? But must be a problem, They HAVEN’T SHIPPED either!!!!
our new truck has left us stranded 2x already and had towed be told and not the dent issue.
My wife and I have a 2023 loaded Z71 and have had the popping every time we have taken it to the car wash from day 1 and we only have 2800 miles. WE DO NOW HAVE THE DENT, and will be contacting the dealer Monday. So sad that this truck is nothing but problems for us. Great looking truck worst quality then anything we have ever owned, and i lease an Alfa Romeo.
I have a ’24 Z71. Had the roof collapse with the first car wash. Called the dealer. They dropped the headliner and “fixed” it with the GM patch. A few weeks later, first trip to the car wash………dented. Called dealer back and they were perplexed. If they knew about the problems with the ’23’s, why no fix for the ’24’s? I am considering exploring options to get my money back. “Don’t go through the car wash” is not an acceptable response for me!
Jason, we are having the exact same problem with our 2024 Z71. We purchased this truck for our company for service. We have already had our truck wrapped and bed cover put on for an additional $4000. The first trip through the car wash had got a dent we took it back, they fixed it two weeks later it’s back at the dealership with another dent. The dealer is saying that GMC knows about it but doesn’t have a fix. They have had our truck two weeks this time in two weeks the first time we dropped it off , a GMC representative called us this morning and told us that we would have to turn it into Or insurance company or go after the car wash because they were not covering it. We have less than 3000 miles on this truck and have not even tagged it yet because they’ve had it more than we have. Plus we just found out it has two other recalls on this truck
Headlights malfunctioning and the fuel line can come unattended in an accident.
BOOM!!!
I was told to turn in to my insurance also after waiting about two months for them to send the service bulletin to the dealership. The supposed fix was done. So I’m thinking everything‘s OK now went to the car wash dented again. Now they’re talking to GM to see what else to do. As much as the payments are and for what these trucks cost, this is ridiculous. GM needs to do a recall. On all or let us just pick a different vehicle. My 2024 AT4 truck had less than 4000 miles.since first incident. This will be the 3rd time
All GM has to do is glue some stiff foam (like what’s used inside bumpers) to the backside side of the roof. It’s that simple. It probably doesn’t even need to be very thick, just something to supplement the metal.
How much room is there between the roof and the liner?
I’m seeing comments in the Colorado forums that those who have gotten the patch are still having roof pops. Pathetic.
I am experiencing similar issues and have submitted a complaint to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. It is important to note that GMC is no longer providing a patch fix under warranty; instead, they are installing braces that were originally omitted from the roof structure. I recommend that you also file a complaint regarding this matter. I own a 2024 Canyon Elevation, which I have only handwashed and have had for six months. Upon touching the roof, it is evident that it bends easily, indicating the absence of necessary braces during manufacturing, which poses a safety risk.
