GM Recalls Nearly 275,000 Vehicles In Canada Over Lighting Software Issue

GM has released a recall in Canada for select vehicles across its four core North American brands – along with BrightDrop – for an issue surrounding lighting control software.

The problem: affected BrightDrop, Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, and GMC vehicles may have a condition where the lower beam headlamps don’t illuminate as it becomes dark outside if the multi-function switch is in the “Off” or “Parking Lamp” position. This may also cause the daytime running lights to turn off while the vehicle is moving, thus not meeting Canadian regulations.

Photo of Cadillac CT4, a luxury sedan that GM produces.

The hazards: if the headlights were to fail to illuminate, visibility could be reduced, which could lead to an increased risk of a crash or serious injury.

The fix: certified GM technicians will be instructed to inspect affected vehicles and update the body control module (BCM) software, as needed.

Affected components: headlamps and daytime running lights.

Affected vehicles:

Number of affected vehicles: General Motors has stated that there are 273,255 vehicles affected by this recall.

Owners should: General Motors will notify owners of affected vehicles by mail and instruct them to make an appointment with their local GM dealer. Any Canadian owners that are unsure whether or not their vehicle is affected by this recall can visit my.gm.ca/gm/en/recalls and type in their VIN to see any open recalls or other actions that may be active on it. Owners can also reach out to BrightDrop, Buick, Cadillac, Chevy, GMC, or Transport Canada directly with any questions or concerns they may have using the recall number and contact information included below.

Does Buick/GMC have a fix? When will it be available?

  7. i talked to my dealer, they said Gm still doesnt have a fix and when they do it will be by serial number, they will do batches of serial numbers. They expect it to be at least 2 weeks to maybe a month. Beautiful hey. my new car is waiting at the dealership and i cant get it.

        1. this is so annoying. my car has been built since September 6 (some type of constraint or broken item they were waiting for) that finally got resolved and now this…

      2. The only reason I bought a GM product is I wanted a corvette lol. That being said, with the ongoing delays in the roll out of the recall fix and lack of transparency in terms of time lines, it seems nothing has changed in terms of GM’s product reliability and especially customer service since their bail out.

    1. I see we’re in similar situations. I have a 2023 stingray that was built sept 6 and has been in “shipping delays” since early October…. Was suppose to deliver Feb until this recall came into effect. I’m almost 2 years since my original deposit.

  15. We are 1 month and 3 days in since buying our 2021 Tahoe , traded them in our car and now 2 payments in… if any of you are in Alberta you can make a complain to AMVIC. The Alberta motor vehicle industry council. Doesn’t make much sense that the other vehicles on the road haven’t even been notified of the headlight issue and yet they are withholding something we own.

  18. Scheduled to pick up my New 2023 Chevrolet Colerado ZR2. Today March 7 2024.
2 hrs before my pickup time I get a call telling me about this garbage and that they won’t be able to release the truck. The dealership is clueless on when GM will get this software update done. I was told it “should be by the end of the month”. But that info comes from a car salesmen that will say anything with no accountability. So now I’m driving my old car with thier dealership plate because my insurance is already with the new truck. Told them I’ll drive my car and they can pay off the lein still until I get my truck.

    1. I work at a GM dealership in service & it isn’t garbage, it’s the truth. Recalls are done through warranty & we cannot submit a claim with no remedy. There is no actual notice of remedy at this moment. We have heard rumors that one will be rolling out this month but we always hear that with recalls and it could be longer. We are not legally allowed to deliver the vehicles with open recalls so your dealership is following protocall. Your anger with them is unreasonable.

      1. My comment about ” garbage “ is the fact that salespeople sold a truck knowing its under a stop sale and a recall. The manager of the store apologized and noted that they should’ve known and should’ve notified me long before a scheduled pickup on the delivery day. That’s the garbage I am referring to. March 11th still no remedy. All the news is about tailgate recalls.

Because as of March 25th there is no fix yet when you run any Vin # for a 23 Colorado or Canyon. The main service rep for the dealerships in my region has no updates or news on this release yet, or when they are releasing it. I don’t hold out hope based on what a salesman tells us. Too many rumors. GMs priority was getting the 2024s all fixed and the corvettes done before everything else.
Salesmen speak. Yea we are looking into it. Hopefully this week sometime. Latest by the end of the month. They say the same thing to all the customers that call up.

  21. Found the following message on a corvette forum. Posted March 5th.
Not sure on where the info comes from but the guy seems to have contact with some inside info regarding this.

Some good news on the recall

GM is well on there way to finding a solution for all of the vehicles named in the recall. So far a solution has been found for Traverse, the GMC Yukon XL, Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, GMC Sierra HD, Silverado HD, GMC Sierra, Chevrolet Silverado, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe and GMC Yukon. Priority has been given to the higher volume vehicles. Up next will be the Cadillac CT4 and CT5, Buick Envision and Corvette. GMC Hummer and the Cadillac Lyriq will be last as there’s only a few of them compared to Corvettes.
Later this week and next the dealers will be hearing about these updates through the Global Connect system. Since a solution has been found to over 50% of the product line already

    1. When you run a vin number for any 2024 it shows incomplete remedy not available.
Dealerships keep telling people there is a fix “hopefully“ coming. The only way to know is run your vin number in the gm recall information website.
Same thing is happening with the 2023 GMC Canyon and 2023 Chevrolet colorado. Status. Incomplete. Remedy not available.

      1. Hopefully is available now, I just checked mine 2023 AT4 Canyon. It says : “Incomplete”. It doesn’t said “Remedy not available” anymore!!

        1. Yea I saw that same status for the Colerado moved to incomplete status.
I called my dealership service manager already. They are emailing gm. They don’t have the email from gm telling them what to do yet they said it’s a clear as mud at this point.

        2. I just spoke with the dealer and he says that even though my unit also only now says incomplete, that it still cannot be released…wth. He says the release was for some units, not all, and apparently mine (2023 Canyon AT4) didn’t make the cut.

            Reply
          2. Incomplete is listed for all of them when you run the vin #s of the Canyons and Colerados. The dealerships don’t have the update to perform the service I guess. No reason for them to make up excuses or reasons why. GM just needs to do thier job and send out the update to the dealerships. I’ll update here as soon as I hear anything.

  30. Am I the only one here that believes this recall is bogus? It makes sense to me that the Off position is bypassing the Daytime Running Lights and low beams sensors and keeping them off. Auto still works, but DOT has problem with Off being Off?
