GM Looking To Relaunch Cruise This Year, Says Mary Barra

As GM Authority has been closely following, GM’s Cruise is expected to eventually relaunch its robotaxi operations in a single, yet unnamed, city. However, up to this point, it wasn’t clear when this reset would occur. Now, General Motors CEO Mary Barra has revealed that the current plan is to restart Cruise operations sooner rather than later.

According to a report from Reuters, Barra stated that the Detroit-based automaker is looking to relaunch its self-driving subsidiary sometime this year.

Speaking on February 15th, 2024 at the Wolfe Research Global Auto and Auto Tech Conference, Barra went on to explain that The General considers Cruise an “incredibly valuable asset” and that the Detroit-based automaker is looking for the best avenue to unlock the value in the autonomous driving service.

“As we get further along, Cruise is going to be a huge opportunity from a personal autonomous vehicle perspective,” Barra remarked.

As a reminder, General Motors slashed Cruise’s budget to approximately $1 billion for the 2024 calendar year. This comes in response to the October 2023 incident, where a pedestrian was trapped and dragged underneath a Cruise robotaxi unit after they had been struck by a human-driven vehicle. As one may expect, the self-driving company has been subject to increased backlash, including an NHTSA investigation and California DMV driverless permit suspension.

Of course, Cruise has taken several steps to address the aforementioned accident directly. For starters, all Cruise AV rides – both manual and supervised – have been suspended, while a recall was issued to update the collision detection system in its robotaxi units. Finally, the autonomous driving subsidiary hired a third-party law firm to investigate its role in the incident, where it was found to not have purposely mislead regulators, despite showing a fundamental misapprehension of its own obligations of accountability and transparency toward the government and the general public.

  1. Why? Please save the money, this is a huge waste! It would be better spent to improve the quality problems of your current products.

  2. I hope they choose a city that is positive about AVs and willing to work constructively toward widespread deployment. That is not San Francisco! They were just a road block, although GM should have managed the relationship much better.

  6. OK, you’ve heard it here first. In May, GM and Microsoft will make a joint announcement of a partnership where GM is providing the hardware, and a lot of software, for autonomous driving, and Microsoft will provide software support through AI. Microsoft will be featured in the infotainment system in GM vehicles, with OnStar.

Microsoft will release a phone tuned with OnStar and autonomy. That gets Microsoft back into mobile, and gets GM world-class software/AI support. A big win for both GM and Microsoft.

OK, I’m not “for sure” it’s going to happen, but the planets are in alignment.
