GM Files To Trademark Weldbrain As Computer Software Branding

GM has filed to trademark the Weldbrain name, GM Authority has learned. The trademark is expected to be used in conjunction with new software that will be used to monitor weld quality.

The trademark was filed on February 13th, 2024 with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), and is assigned serial number 98403856. The application carries a Goods and Services description of “Welding monitoring software, namely, downloadable computer software for use in determining weld quality.”

The exact intended use for this trademark is currently not known, but we can assume that it will be used in conjunction with a new software system that can determine to quality of a weld, possibly during the production process. As GM Authority has covered extensively, a variety of General Motors have exhibited welding issues as of late. For example, some 2024 Chevy Trax units and 2024 Buick Envista units may exhibit a leak roof, while General Motors recently released a fix for split roof panels in the 2024 GMC Sierra and 2024 Chevy Silverado. Additionally, some units of the Cadillac Lyriq have been recalled for improperly welded seat belt brackets and improperly welded battery connections.

Although the implementation of the new Weldbrain software remains unclear, it’s possible that it may leverage some sort of AI-infused inspection system to monitor for quality welds during production. GM recently partnered with UVeye to deploy new drive-through vehicle inspection technology that can check a vehicle for damage. The UVeye system includes underbody scans that check for frame damage, missing parts, fluid leaks, and exhaust issues, as well as additional inspection systems that can check tire quality, air pressure, and tread depth, plus a third system that scans the exterior of the vehicle for dents or scratches in the body. The system quickly scans for all these things using AI-based visual systems. Perhaps Weldbrain will do something similar to ensure weld quality during production.
