GM Electric Vehicles To Access Tesla Supercharger Network In Spring 2024

As GM Authority has been following, General Motors electric vehicles are set to gain access to the Tesla Supercharger Network this year, which will serve as an important stepping stone in the Detroit-based automaker’s upcoming transition to the North American Charging Standard (NACS). While rival Ford just gained access to the charging infrastructure this week, GM EVs will soon be able to do the same.

Starting in Spring 2024, General Motors’ all-electric vehicles will be supported by Tesla’s Supercharger network, along with Rivian, Volvo, and Polestar EVs.

It’s worth noting that the North American Charging Standard was actually originally developed by Tesla.

Of course, GM customers using Superchargers will need an adapter, which will likely be provided as Ford did for its customers. Interestingly, after the transition to NACS connectors on its 2025 model-year EVs, The General stated that it will also make additional adapters available for NACS-capable vehicles that will allow them to charge on CSS-capable fast charge stations.

Furthermore, the Tesla Supercharger Network will be integrated into GM vehicle infotainment and mobile apps, enabling drivers to quickly locate and pay for charging at available Tesla Supercharger stations.

As one may expect, GM isn’t planning on sitting idle while Tesla attempts to dominate electric charging solutions by its lonesome, as the Detroit-based automaker has continued to invest into expanding the existing North American EV charging infrastructure. In fact, GM electric vehicle owners already have access to 134,000 chargers through the Ultium Charge 360 initiative.

Building upon that, General Motors has also made a wide array of agreements with multiple third-party charging networks, including Blink Charging, ChargePoint, EV Connect, EVgo, FLO and Greenlots.

“Our vision of the all-electric future means producing millions of world-class EVs across categories and price points, while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption,” GM CEO Mary Barra has been quoted as saying.

        2. In anticipation of the Tesla network opening, I recently purchased two NACS adapters, as a matched set, from the manufacturer, A2ZEV. The casing material feels made of high quality plastic that stands up well to life wear and tear.

          The difference between the two is in the end that plugs into my car: a Chevy Bolt EUV.

          One of the adapters is used to provide power to the Bolt’s J-1772 connector. The J-1772 is used for Alternating Current (AC) 120-volt or 240-volt charging situations. You will find them in home charging situations. You can also find them in some commercial applications such as hotels and parking lots, that are providing slower, low cost or free charging solutions. The J-1772 connector passes AC power to the onboard AC to DC converter, which in turn charges the onboard high energy battery.

          The second adapter is used to provide power to the Bolt’s CCS-1 connector. The CCS-1 connector on my Bolt, has a flip down orange flap that covers the connector. The CCS-1 connector is used for rapid Direct Current (DC) Fast Charging (FC) commercial situations. DCFC power transfer is generally expressed not in volts or amps, but in the product (multiplication) of the two values: watts. Usually, the number is so big that it is divided by 1,000 and then expressed as kilowatts.

          That was a lot of background info. Sorry. So the second NACS adapter is used only with Tesla’s (or commercial competitor’s) Superchargers that provide only DCFC. The Bolt’s CCS-1 connector exclusively handles the power of the DCFC exchange.

          In DCFC situations, the J-1772 portion of the connector is used only for signaling (chatty-chat between the DCFC computer and the car’s onboard charging computer: is a safe connection established and active, now?; more power, less power, and I’m full)

          So right now, anyone that has a J-1772 connector on their car can use the first adapter at a Tesla Destination EVSE.

          Also right now, there are a very small number of non-Tesla owned DCFC sites that use the NACS connector. The second adapter (NACS to CCS-1) can be used there, right now.

          What I’m anxiously waiting for (and I imagine most other Chevy/GM EV owners) is when we can plug into a Tesla Supercharger (with our CCS-1 adapter) and our car beeps, blinks and starts charging.

          Yes, soon. Very soon.

          1. Unfortunately you won’t be able to Tesla Supercharge a Bolt, because the minimum speed of a Tesla Charger is 70KW, which would melt your 50KW capped Bolt.

            I am a Bolt owner also. The Tesla app already denies charging (all the red dots for chargers dissapear off the map) as soon as you say your car charges at a 50KW speed.

            I’ll be trading my Bolt for a faster charging vehicle this month, for that reason.

              (It’s only certain superchargers that are currently capable of charging without an adapter. That will change going forward)

            2. Respectfully, that does not sound right, and here’s why.

              All EVs slow down their charging rate, as the battery fills up. On top of that, once the battery is full, the charging stops. The rate of charging is ultimately controlled by the onboard computer.

              Near my home, a set of four brand new EVgo DCFC EVSEs were recently installed. I plugged my Bolt into one of them. These EVSEs are rated at up to 200KW. The maximum rate of charge, that my Bolt achieved, was 53KW. That rate was reported both by EVgo’s and my Bolt’s charging screens.

              I’m willing to do a wait-and-see with regards to identifying/confirming if there is a minimum charge rate on Tesla Superchargers.

              1. Download the tesla app. Add a Ford Mustang with NACS adapter.

                Two options are available when searching for chargers. Above 70kw speed, or below.

                If you say ‘need charger capable of below 70kw’ speed….. it immediately scraps all chargers off your map, and refuses to allow you to charge.

                Download and try for yourself.

                I would feel odd plugging up a Tesla Charger with my slow 55 minute charging Bolt anyways.

                  In a few more weeks, the Tesla Superchargers will open up to GM’s vehicles. I’m curious to see if the Bolt will be excluded.

                  If it is, that would make for a good argument for getting an ID.Buzz—in orange and white, of course! J.K.

                  Even if excluded, it’s not a death knell for my Bolt. My Bolt does an exceptionally good job in its role as a commuter vehicle. In that role, the battery is recharged overnight, once or twice a week.

                  In that role, the rate of charge is non-issue. The time that I save by not having to babysit the refilling of a gas tank is significant. It takes me way less than a minute to plug and unplug my car.

                  The time spent to refill my previous gas car was a 10 to 15 minute proposition. I’m counting the time from turning into the gas station driveway, until I was back on the road. And if, like my wife, who is willing to wait in the gas line at Costco, then I add another 5 to 10 minutes on top of that (maybe more). And if she exclusively makes a trip, just for the gas, that’s easily over 30 total minutes.

                  Huge swaths of time are saved when comparing the refilling of my old gas car to what is in reality a five second plug and unplug of my Bolt.

                  So, how much time do I save?

                  Going with the 10 minute gas refill figure—which I think is low—and figuring that I would refill my old car at least once every other week, I am saving at least four hours a year, spent mindlessly monitoring a gas pump.

                  My experience is that 95% or more of the time, recharge rate is simply a red herring. I’m not standing in my garage, monitoring my car’s recharge. I plug in the car and keep right on moving. And in the morning, I have an added bonus. I can now remotely turn on my Bolt. It’s smart enough to judge the ambient temperature. In the Winter, it will warm the steering wheel, heat the seat and also the cabin air, all while still plugged into the house. So the battery charge is left untouched. In the Summer, it cools the cabin and seats.

                  You can’t easily do that with an ICE car. Compare the time savings and convenience of a BEV—even with my Bolt’s slower 50KW recharge rate—and benefits over my old ICE car are indisputable.

                  And overtime, the benefits of BEV ownership will only get better from here.

                  2. Also, keep in mind that only 15K of the Tesla Superchargers nationwide will be adapted to work with non-Tesla vehicles for now. We won’t be able to just pull up to any Tesla chargers.

              2. The maximum rate you can charge at is what the car calls for. It doesn’t matter how fast the charger is. So a Supercharger won’t charge any faster than a 150kw SAE charger.

                Don’t pick the faster charger, if given a choice between 150 or 300. The bolt can’t even charge at 150.

                And a supercharger certainly won’t set your Bolt on fire, like you originally said, because it won’t charge any faster than the Bolt allows.

                But go ahead, just keep on arguing about how things work. Even after you were corrected.

                  I’m a Bolt EUV owner and I would like to support the implicit point that you are making: Avoid charging a Bolt EV or EUV at a Tesla Supercharger. Unless there is no other DCFC alternative nearby (within the remaining charge of your car’s battery), it is a waste of charging capacity. No matter the EVSE’s capacity, the Bolt will only accept around 50KW of power, max.

                  To others reading this, don’t get me wrong. I absolutely love my Bolt and have no regrets with the purchase. I would buy it again. A strength is the human interface: it is very traditional and intuitive. And I won’t lie… I really like the black Bow Tie on the nose. It has anti-snob cred.

                  Other than for the first or second time novelty of it, the only other time that I would seriously consider charging my Bolt at a Tesla Supercharger is if I’m on a road trip and the Supercharger was the only DCFC station within the remaining range of my car’s battery.

                  But hey, if I get there and there’s four Superchargers, and no one else is around, I might as well go ahead and top off to 80% and drive on.

                  1. That will be the only time I would charge at a Tesla supercharger is on a roadtrip and there is no other option.
                    There will be times that may happen. But I will generally stick to the ones I already use.

                    It will be nice to have another option.

    1. As batteries get cheaper, so will EV’s. In a couple of years an EV will be cheaper than ICE, and wrights law will both drive down he cost of EV’s (like electronics), and drone up the cost of ICE vehicles.

      Who exactly is going to be crowing about driving a more expensive car, that uses more expensive fuel, that requires more expensive maintenance? You, maybe?

In a couple of years, you will see the current, unaffordable prices for EV’s climb even further into the unaffordable range due to higher prices for “solid state batteries” but you’ll still be searching, fruitlessly, for a working charging stations with unoccupied connections with no lines while trying to go anywhere other than to work and home again. And you’ll still need far more time to re-charge than what it takes to fill a gas tank. Another dumb, pie-in-the-sky statement from another EV fan-boy.       Until you’ve actually driven an EV—for a week, not just around the block—you don’t know what you’re talking about. They’re smooth, quiet, and powerful. It is a far less stressful ride. For me, it has brought back the joy of driving, for driving’s sake.

      When gas cars first came out, it was a pain in the butt to find gas. Sometimes, you’d have to go to places like pharmacies, or hardware stores to buy it. Now, gas is everywhere.

      And where now are all of the horses, hay and buggies? Uh-huh. Niche.

      Soon enough, EV charging stations will be just like gas stations are today: profuse.

      Also, this length of charging time is a false flag question. Unless you are on a long road trip, is not a question of how long does it take to recharge, that matters. On a day to day basis, what really matters is how long does it take YOU to refill the vehicle.

      I get home and once a week, I plug it in. That’s less way less than 30 seconds. In the morning, it’s full. Less than 30 seconds to unplug. To gas up a car, it is at least 10 minutes from the moment you turn into the gas station, until you leave. If you pay cash, it is even longer.

      Besides, on a cold morning, while my car is still plugged in, I can remote start it in the garage. When I get in, the steering wheel is warm. Seats are warm. Air is warm. Plus, there is no carbon monoxide to kill you. The power came from the house, so the battery’s range is still full.

      It is amazing how much time is saved by not having to stop at the gas station.

      Oh and here’s another positive I just discovered. The front rims are clean! After washing the car, I always wipe the rims and it is expected that there will be brake dust on the front two. It’s annoying. So I was pleasantly shocked when my microfiber cloth did not have black marks on it, after drying the front rims.

      This is the Model T era of EVs. And it is already pretty darned good. I’d buy my car again… a Chevy Bolt EUV with Super Cruise. I have no regrets at all. The EV ownership experience will only get better from here.

      It is quaint to watch folks riding around in horses and buggies. In 20 to 30 years, people will be pointing and waving at the novelty of the ICE cars, as they pass by.

  6. I sold my Chevy Bolt and bought it back when I heard Tesla would open their charging network to GM. I look forward to being able to take long trips with my Bolt without worrying whether or not the charging station is functional.
